I do agree that being anxious an entire game isn't necessarily the best feeling, try to look at it from a different perspective. I used to feel the same about the original frostpunk, and because of it, I stopped playing for a few years. I hated how difficult it was to balance things like resources, sick, discontent, and hope. But I realized, that for every time I failed, it gave me better insight on how I should try the next run, and the next. I would get to two weeks before the storm, and fail because I didn't stockpile coal, the next run I got closer but got banished because hope fell too low, and the run after that I failed because everyone died during the storm. Finally I was able to weather everything, survive the storm, and beat it. I guess what I'm trying to say is let your failures, teach you what you should've done instead, and take that insight into the next run to get further. Once you see and realize it's run based, that anxiety goes away. Because at that point, you're not only teaching yourself, but bettering your management and skills. And that will make each run that much more fun, because once you surpass your last failure point, it's all new territory! And therein lies the fun of the unknown. Sorry for long comment lol.
@@DropDeadAxel I mean yeah, that makes sense. And it was actually a similar experience in the first game where I failed a ton and got a bit better each time, but I simply gave up at some point. Then when I realized there was an easy mode (maybe it was an update?) I tried it and had a much better time. This is also the only time I ever play a game on easy lol. Perhaps I'll try it on the normal mode first. But I'm skeptical 😅
@justinlocke7935 yeah there's nothing wrong with easy! Whatever helps uou enjoy the game I say. Just wanted to offer a different perspective that mightve help ya know? Sometimes seeing things differently, can give you that euphoric feeling of experiencing it for the first time.
I mean. Could you imagine Frostpunk but you also have military units and fight off invaders, barbarians, and compete for resources with neighbouring city's.
Some people act like it's too much of a departure from Frostpunk 1 but genuinely I don't know if I would have played this game at all if it was too similar. I think the changes made to it do a great job at reflecting how society views expansion and the insufficient means to supply ambition, just as well as Frostpunk 1 did a great job at reflecting how a small shantytown viewed the simple prospect of survival. I think a lot of the changes in this game were needed and I think it did a great job
I didn't quite get the idea behind 8/10. He sounded like he'd give it a 9/10. What was lacking for 2 point deduction here besides convoluted overworld UI? Surely that's not a basis for 2 points?
Really don't like this sentiment from gamers. A reviews value is in figuring out if you're like the reviewer, and like the things they said about the game, or not. The score means next to nothing if you haven't actually seen the review.
I dont understand how people enjoy the sandbox mode which runs for unlimited time. What is the motivation to play a game that never ends. Frostpunk 1 had very less campaigns and I hope they add more in Frostpunk 2. Maybe release few more dlc for that first part also.
The motivation is the challenge of seeing how long you can sustain your colony. Like surviving as many levels as possible in CoD Zombies. Not that I was able to experience that in the first Frostpunk. It crashed as soon as I survived my first blizzard.
8 is for very good games, ones that set out to do something specific and manage to more or less achieve their goals. They might have issues, but usually they are minor and do not effect your enjoyment of the game. All in all it's a safe bet you'll enjoy the game if you enjoy other games like it, but it won't necessary interest you if you dislike the genre. 9 is for games that go beyond the established standards and achieve more than expected. They might have issues, but they are dwarfed by enjoyment coming from new, unexpected experiences. 9/10 might be good enough to even entice people who do not usually play similar games. 10 is a masterpiece, an instant classic. The game is not only perfect in its execution, but also sets new standards for all games to come. Everyone should play 10/10. From everything I've heard in this review, 8/10 makes perfect sense.
Idk, seems like they shoved in too many new mechanics into it. Frostpunk was about gathering resources and survival, this looks like the US congress simulator
you'd think it'd look more like the UK parliament, not US congress - i guess the more circular design of the "congress" senate meeting helps visually with the lanterns & whatever, but its not like they couldnt have come up with smth similar for the silhouette of the UK parliament. Since, y'know, the city is supposed to be the survivors of London & other populations from around the British Isles after the collapse of the British Empire
Many issues are preventing the game from being playable for me. The top issue is the resolution adjustment that is locked in Window mode! I have an Ultra Wide Monitor and play many games that require onscreen navigation and selection in a Windowed 2560x1440 mode, and that option is not there! So now my only option is to play in 5120x1440, which is beyond tedious. I played FP1 with no problem in 2560x1440. Right now, the game is not playable for me, and there are other bugs. I should have waited and once again kicking myself for getting a game when it releases.
Update: 11 Bit Studies - Suggests I change the resolution in Full Screen to 2560 x 1440? What? This will cause screen distortion and will not address the issue. This option is available in Frostpunk and works perfectly. It is a coding issue. Very disappointed to get this suggestion from support. Continue to play Frostpunk until Frostpunk 2 issues are resolved.
I had hopes but this genuinely comes across as pretty disappointing. The game's narrative sounds like a mind-prison of Great Man Theory invariably culminating in a doomed Rational Centrism game of attrition, where you might just make it through if you manage to stymie enough of some supposed inherently destructive "nature of man" which isn't driven by material conditions so much as abstract ideas. I think it would be so much more interesting if the game could be maneuvered in such a way where these factions can be embraced, merged, and eventually turn other ones obsolete, and you had to live with the society you create from these choices rather than the "difficult choices" you get pushed into because a dice decided that you ended up with the "Stuff Children Into Woodchippers" faction for that playthrough. Being punished for going "too far" into any faction's direction by having irrational extremists spawn thereof, just because you gave them too much attention or whatever, sounds not just ahistoric and bereft of materialist analysis, but incredibly annoying. Maybe some DLCs or something will flesh out our options in the future, but given the general approach of the game and how cynical it all is, I'm not holding on to hope.
@@RemingtonDeanwhat in the world are you on about? They gave a very well thought out critique of the game’s systems and even offered detailed solutions that might help alleviate the problems that they had with said systems. Also it was never hateful or disparaging to anyone who might like those systems and even remained bright even though he wasn’t very hopeful about the future of the game by saying it could be updated with DLC that would address the problems he had. Completely polite and thoughtful and I have to say refreshing to read a comment that wasn’t just uncritical rage. Bought it, didn't like it. It's not a Civ game it's closer to a board game or a Moble app game. It's a game were half the gameplay is just turning on and off building's to keep certain resources from running out, frankly I felt more frustration playing it then joy.
They got lazy. It would have been really hard to retain the intimate depth of the first game while expanding on the building mechanics and overall scale... so they didn't. They chose scale and a more generic city builder approach, and forsook a lot of what made Frostpunk unique and intimate.
I don't think they got lazy but I do think they tried to reinvent the wheel and the result is gameplay mechanics completely different from the first game and losing that something the made the 1st so engaging
