I sailed on the Liberte from Southampton to New York with my Mum in 1957. It had the same reputation as 'Strictly Come Dancing' in those days and my Mum did not disappoint!
Going by the look of her funnels, the footage at the pier is of the Liberte on two different occasions. We see her with the funnels that were raised in 1954 then afterward on the funnels we see the fins (?) from the time of her 1950 debut. Even though the picture quality isn't great, I'm glad that the interior footage was still retained. I've seen just a little motion picture footage in the past of the liner's interiors but this is the first I've seen that is in color.
I sailed into a new life at age 5 on this ship. I remember it well. November 1957 - very stormy seas. I was glad to get off that ship tho getting straight onto a train for a two day trip didn't help. Best trip of my life in reality. The USA gave me a wonderful life.
At the age of 5 (with parents, I guess) in the middle of 1950's yes. By then you could find very good and prosperous life. It is very hard today when you go being already 45. Times and America underwent huge changes.
@@johnfalstaff2270 my parents were 48. They did it for their children. We moved 15 times once we got to the US. Immigrants were not as well accepted in the 50s. I was eager to fit in, and quickly dropped my accent, my customs and my culture. To be American was my goal. I married an immigrant too.
@@johnfalstaff2270 you can't be much older than me as I'm quite the senior now. I still have the sailing tickets and info on the Liberte. That ship was my lifeline!
Do you know if this film was 16mm, or 8mm? Actually pretty nice quality for the time, especially for what I assume was “home movies” Probably shot on Kodachrome, with a better quality camera and lenses!? Thanks!
The former SS Europa now named Liberty! She is one beautiful lady as the Europa and as the SS Liberty. I wish she still existed today as a hotel and museum in Le Harvey France. It would be like the Queen Mary of France
............not bad. But where's the better quality image film ? And why that shot of the Mauritania at her New York pier ? No explanation/info given for this slip........Jim

Like how there's some interior footage as well.
Yes, so great to see interior shots! Thanks

@@lindabarnes4128. As I thought so... Good for you. Comparing to my age, you are still girl... So, look up into future.

What a treat!
I sailed this ship as a child, maybe 1958 and 1960. Will look for some memorabilia I think I have.
My favorite French liners are Normandie, Ile De France, France (1910 and 1960), and the Liberte!
The Liberte was a German ship! It’s name was Europa. It had the blue riband from 1930 to 1933.
@@bekluwe It WAS German when she was called Europa. Liberte is the French version, which is why I said Liberte and not Europa.
Nice romantic music in back ground.

Or of Germany. She could lay in her former home harbour Bremen.
@@bekluwe, the idea of turning old passenger liners into hotels is failed. Only Queen Mary still exists. Her days are numbered however...
At 0:19 and 1:07, 1:18 and 1:45 she had different stacks (funnels). I do not know when they were modified.
The Ex Europa
1:33 RMS Mauretania 2!
Yes. IT is a forgotten and already gone ship today.
Judging by the clothing, and the cars in NYC, I’d say earlier 50’s
