Another great video, about another great ship. Last summer, I was visiting family, and I found a drink coaster from the Nieuw Amsterdam in their living room. They had gone on a cruise aboard her. They allowed me to keep the coaster, so now, I have a drink coaster from the SS Nieuw Amsterdam. The picture of the ship on the coaster is similar to this video's thumbnail.

She was a real piece of art. Her simple, yet well proportionated and symmetrical lines made her a real beauty. A ship made with heart and soul .

A ship for us Dutch to be proud of. She was beautiful. A real Queen of the 7 seas.

I was a bell boy on this beautiful liner in the early 60's, until today I have a few photo books on the Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam & all of HAL passenger liners, plus a book on HAL history through the ages, you have made a fantastic video of the old footage on the NIEUW Amsterdam, thank you for the memories. I will NEVER forget the grand old lady the NIEUW AMSTERDAM *****!!!!!!.

Thank you for creating this video of what was, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful ship to ever sail the seas. Oh how I love this grand ol' lady!

I worked on her in the early seventies as a lounge and deck steward, made one of the last scheduled trans Atlantic crossings and a few Caribbean cruises. She is the steadiest ship I have sailed on in some really bad weather. A real beauty and one of the best ocean liners ever build. Also worked on the Rotterdam V, now a hotel ship in Rotterdam and word a visit, and on the ss Veendam 3 ( previous ss Argentina ), and the ss Statendam 3.

It's pretty cool to hear about a Dutch ocean liner. We mostly hear about British, French, German, and Italian liners but not always Dutch ships.

I was on her for 3 voyages in the 60s. I remember the gold handrails and blue carpets on the stairs, the theater forward where I watched “Kind Hearts and Coronets”, the musicians playing on the balcony over the dining room, and much more. A great ship! Great video!

I never appreciated the looks and history of Dutch liners until I saw this video! What a beauty! Gotta give them more love!

She had graceful lines. It's sad to see them go to the breakers and watch beauty die.

A magnificent ship, often overlooked. The other liners were dinosaurs in comparison. Built to impress, not built for maximum passenger comfort and to the highest degree of quality and engineering like the New Amsterdam. In rough seas, she was incredibly stable and smooth. Even the most minute details had a distinct quality feel to them.
I like to think of her as a 70's midsize Mercedes in a field of fullsize US luxury cars. Smaller and slower, yet infinitely better.

Great vídeo! Just keep going telling us the history of those greatest ladies using videos! I also received excellent feedbacks from the Mauretania 2 video and it will certainly be no different! I love a pic took during the night, when Nieuw Amsterdam is docked in Rio de janeiro (Port of Pier Mauá). And knowing that one of these legends were in South America, makes me very happy! My congratulations on the images and records that I can only find through your videos, rare records! ⭐❤️

A ship designed w/ hull sheer shows some respect for the Sea; this video, finally recognizing Nieuw Amsterdam, is a delight. Another humble view of her can seen in the background in the movie On The Waterfront, apparently docked in the East River, NYNY.

In retrospect, it's too bad the Dutch didn't preserve her and turn her into a floating hotel like they did with the Rotterdam.

Thanks very much OlympicWS for the upload. As a ship lover most of my life, it breaks my heart to see a fine liner being destroyed. As teenagers my brother and I used to get passes from the various companies to look over their liners when they were in Southampton. The N.A. was one of those. I remember how unusual her interior seemed compared to other ships I'd seen and I realize now that she was actually more "Art Moderne" than "Art Deco" Nevertheless all the quality hallmarks were of a liner from the golden age, an absolutely beautiful ship. A far cry from the kitschy and cheap looking interiors of today's ugly condos on the water.

Absolutely stunning. There is something so majestic about these liners. I did an 8 month contact as fitness instructor on the Rotterdam managing to get a world cruise. I used to be so excited about ocean liners and the sheer magic of being at sea. Unfortunately the only ships that I would board now are out of my price range. Thanks for putting so much effort in. Cheers from London

In 1942 my Grandfather sailed on this ship from Durban to Egypt where he fought in the western desert. It is such a great shame that all the information on this montage has been copied word for word from wikipedia, when so much more relevent information can be found.

I felt her severe boiler issues in 1967 would be worth a mention as it was a career-ender. The ship by then was already nearing 30 years of service and the decline of passenger traffic since 1958 were working against her. She certainly would have been sent to the breakers after that year had the United States Navy not provided surplus boilers. They were installed during a sixteen-week shipyard period at Wilton-Fijenoord in Schiedam and her career continued for an additional 6 more years.

Amazing video. In the future, could you do videos on the Matson Lines "White Fleet" which consisted of 4 ocean liners the SS Monterey, SS Malolo,
SS Mariposa, and SS Mariposa. These were a class of 4 ships that resembles the big four ships of the White Star Line and I think it would be an interesting topic.
