  • Can you believe that Victor Japan (JVC) have put a claim on this video for the Famicom Classic's version of the Mappy music? Seems Victor Japan is Namco's money grabber since they've also claimed various other Namco game videos I've put up. So sad (-_-)

    Hey, couldn't notice anything wrong with your voice :)
    No way the Colecovision would do that smooth scroll from the Super Cassete vision version... it really seems more capable than a Coleco.
    The MSX version was made by Namco itself, it really could use a little bit more of color indeed. at least on the backgrounds and the items to collect.
    And Dempa were like the 8 bits japanese Tiertex handling ports to a lot of different arcade systems to a lot of systems, except they did a shitload more of stuff than Tiertex....... and like two hundred times better :D
    I wonder how many 16 years old garage coders Dempa had on their staff back at those days :D

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Peck Man Yeah, those guys from Team Pixelboy are stealing all our MSX games to their lesser system. :D
      Most of those games (Including Mappy) needs a rather new upgrade pluging called "Super Game Module" or something, I guess because the MSX had more RAM than the coleco.

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Peck Man I must say I personally see no point in making games for a retro system that actually requires a modern upgrade.

    Hearing the Bonus Stage theme from this game reminds me of when it was used in Takeshi's Castle when contestants got to the Gibraltar Strait obstacle.

    You must not be feeling well, since got the Yopino and N.Kei versions mixed up in the final comparison. Get some rest and recover soon!
    Anyways, it's a shame this game never became popular in the US like it did in Japan. Also, I've never heard of the Super Cassette Vision until now. It looks a little more capable than the Colecovision, since the MSX1 was pretty much identical to it, and that version of Mappy looks much worse. The X1 version kind of annoys me with how the sound effects cut into the music, since the soundchip was functionally similar to the MSX and Game Gear, and both of those versions don't suffer that problem.

    Even though it's not an official port, there's also an =[amazing]= version of the game for the Atari 2600 made recently by the guy that did a bunch of great ports/clones of some arcade games to DOS back before actual emulation was feasible on such slow machines at the time (John Champeau/'CHAMPgames')

Being I have one of the home arcade Namco Museum consoles that plug into the TV. The ones that had Dig Dug, Galaga, PAC-MAN, and even Rally X. Maybe you should do one of those next. Was really entertaining to watch this. :) 👍

    I have some kind of love-hate relationship with Mappy. I enjoy the platforming, but in the end the main goal of the game is just not to die fast. You can't really defend yourself in a proper way (A police officer that have a stick but can't use It), and have to run a LOT. Maybe this prevented the game to be more popular in the west.

    • @retrofan4963
      @retrofan4963 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't say that's a reason. In Pacman, you also run away from the Ghosts a lot, and that game is inferior to Mappy(Which I don't understand why Pacman is still more popular but I digress). And besides, Mappy has enough mechanics to defend yourself anyway. If you use the door mechanics like how you're supposed to, it can make a very helpful defense to survive in this Cat and Mouse chase game. You can use the doors to hit the Meowky gang, but you can also use it to boost yourself by sliding yourself, which is a helpful mechanic to go to the trampolines faster. In later levels, you can use bells to stun enemies mid-air temporarily, and rainbow platforms to create pitfalls for enemies to fall of and stunned themselves. There's also Microwave Power door to throw the Meowky gang and Goro out of their hideout temporarily and gives you bonus points. All these mechanics are enough to help Mappy to retrieve the stolen items. It's only up to you to strategize of using them to beat the levels as much as you can, just like any Arcade game of that decade. Trust me, this is coming from someone who made it to level 50 of the game. It is a really challenging game, but once you practice of these mechanics and knowing how the AI of the Meowky gang works, you'll get the hang of it. It's challenging, but it's a really fun and a really great game. Normally Arcade games in that time period are really challenging, but what's the fun without a challenge? :)

    • @retrofan4963

      What's there to loathe on Mappy? Mappy is a really great and fun game. It's one of the Arcade games I can think of that greatly balance the difficulty. It's challenging, but it's also really fun. It's one those Arcade games I have a blast time with it, instead of feeling frustrated over it. Heck, I'll go as far to say that I have more fun with Mappy than other popular Arcade games like Pacman, Galaga, Dig Dug and even Donkey Kong. I find Pacman(For example) to be incredibly frustrating and not that fun, while Mappy on the other hand, has a really fun gameplay, with really fun mechanics, great level of difficulty that's balanced, has great music, and greatly designed levels. Mappy is my favorite Arcade game of all time, and in my point of view, this game deserves to be in the same level of recognition as other popular Arcade games like Galaga, Dig Dug, and Mario Bros.
