Very interesting. Been playing D&D for 40 years and I’ve heard of all the versions, but I couldn’t say what order they were in. It would be fascinating to do a kind of family tree and trace back from 5th Ed to earlier versions, showing which versions had the most influence on the next edition. For example, 5th Ed is not like 4th Ed, so is it the child of 3.5? Is 3rd Ed a child of AD&D or BECMI? I guess it’s not really important, just mildly interesting.
Thanks, I wasn't sure about that. I wonder if they added dice into the later "Collector's Edition" sets which you could still find in the early 80s when I got into the hobby?

No dice, just 3 booklets. There were 3 additional booklets. I got mine in late 1976
