      Layne had a unique voice you cannot replicate or replace.
      Layne Staley's vocal range (5 octaves, 3 notes, 1 semitone) can run rings around any other grunge singer (including Chris Cornell) in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
      Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne’s vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.

    I believe Barret Martin the drummer tells a story of a good friend of his driving while listening to this album with his child in back seat. All alone comes on and the child says, daddy is that an angel singing, brought a tear to my eye, Mike McCready said it was suppose to be an instrumental and they came back to the studio and Layne had laid down these vocals, enough said.....beautiful!

      Layne was an absolute _assassin_ in the studio. A true recording prodigy. Dude had such a supernatural ability to understand and create intricate vocal harmonies and arrange them and capture them on tape. Alice In Chains album's vocals are like a rich woven tapestry of subtlety with an astounding attention to detail. And the crazy part about it is, if you read interviews with producers like Toby Wright or Dave Jerden, they all say that actually tended to work very quickly and efficiently in the studio; knowing exactly what he wanted ahead of time and exactly what needed to be done to achieve it. That type of arrangement chops and musical awareness is a damn rare thing from a vocalist.

Here I sit, two years sober and watching this video enables me to feel a great sense of gratitude as well as loss for the beautiful artist that Layne was. I thank him often.

    I was 22 years old when this album came out and I remember feeling as if it brought me into another dimension especially with all alone - river of deceit and wake up- and this is when I discovered meditation; he also got me through very dark times ! It truly is a miracle I am alive (now 45) Layne is now with my niece Mia who recently transitioned at age 28 ; when I showed Mad season to her at age 25 she fell in love , No other voice like Laynes ; the frequencies are that of healing ; to balance our chakras

    Seriously one of my fave Layne songs ever, just because of the way he made the attitude and atmosphere feel like, like he was letting us in to a very private moment. Them "ahhhh's" and "we're all alone", especially at the end, gave me proper goosebumps. I actually writ a similar song to this because it influenced me so much, because sometimes you don't need a thousand words to describe your feelings, just a few, and a loud warm voice. Layne had it all. R.I.P

    Some people conjure feelings of depression from this song. To the right people, this can be one of the most potent love songs ever. The fact he uses the plural form ("we") for being alone I tend to agree with the love song aspect.

      he didn't die alone he secluded himself but he was never truly alone I think anyone that knew him friends or family tried everything sometimes there is nothing you can do but love them from a distance but layne never died alone he was loved by all that knew him and he knew it but chose to self isolate but was always loved and everything possible was done and more

      @@nerradreknoy4729 totally agree. He isolated himself but he knew his friends and family loved him. Some times it’s just hard to stay. It’s sounds like he was in a lot of pain. Drug addiction is a very lonely ride. On a happier note, I hope, and I think he knew, how much his music touched so many and still does. I’m sure he’s found peace and is with Demi. As well as Chris,Kurt,Andy, Scott, Baker and the many others from that era that left us too soon. He’s been gone almost 2 decades and I still listen to and love his music in both his bands.

    DISCLAIMER: watching this video may cause intense emotional pain and be triggering. I almost had to turn it off when Layne started singing. Layne's voice gets me every time. It's soooo beautiful, so raw, and so filled with pain. I was a teen in the 90s and honestly don't know if I'd be here without AIC and Mad Season. This music is truly a gift.

    Always loved his voice. So much emotion. I met him a few times in the early years, when I was living in Bremerton. He was a kind person. An old soul. He was never the same, after the death of Demri. I can feel his pain in this song. He was such a vulnerable person and it shows in his music. His lyrics. A kind sould.

    • @agnesszajko8600
      @agnesszajko8600 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah,I got it.Bc Layne... just Layne, one of a kind,and very,very good soul and person certainly. I could tell,write so many pages of Him,but not necessary, so many ppl wrote about Layne, so...He's an angel(now and always was on the ground too),I understand You.But You should trying let how He died(yes,sad and hurt)I think,and focusing His beautiful music what He left for us.Sorry,just so many ppl wrote in the comment section His drug use,how He died,etc.I think Layne more than His addiction, etc.Trust me,I play His songs(AIC, Mad Season,etc)and these objects always appearing below in the comments. Nah, that hurts Me,cause Layne's legacy deserve better than that(like junkie,etc,too much reading,my bad).I'm really glad how You feel for Layne!Amazing Man!Oh,sorry,this too long,and If I made a big mistakes sorry again,not my native language.God Bless You! :)

      Agnes Szajko haha that’s ok. I don’t think he was a bad person or a junkie (but he was) it’s just I feel so bad seeing how he becames in nothing. He was so powerful singing in Facelift and then he just died alone and that make me feel deeply sad. I lately was reading a blog about he and demri writing from a friend of them call Barbara. Tells a lot of stories

    • @agnesszajko8600
      @agnesszajko8600 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Maria Emilia Diluca Haltrich Yes, You could feel & see what this shit did and consumed Him. Idk, what's wrong? with me,bc what I saw(concerts,unplugged too)and heard when Layne appeared these features: beautiful(his voice too).That's it.I never noticed his face color or how skiny and fragile He was in Unplugged for example. Really.Then I started reading comments etc,and this ruined my whole 'Layne world'. Yeah,I knew everything what He done,but I can't saw that on him.I know,it's strange but..so personally I'm glad bc I was blind so many years,and more than grateful that we couldn't see his final years(looks,soul..).I finally read the AIC book (David de la sola )& awful to me.Deeply sad and I can't take those feelings, very hard book.Barbara?I don't remember her name,read or something.. I think.Can You send a link to me? :) I'll never get enough of Layne, so I wanna read a lot of story!Please! ;) And You know,sorry my bad english again!I just hope You'll understand what I tried to say.

    So sad a beautiful masterpiece that will be remembered through the sands of time as this is.. this is probably the ONLY real time to see how bad he really was, from the covered hands, the skin sores, the rotted teeth.. those close ups are hauntingly depressing. Such a legendary voice coming out of this badly broken down vessel.. seen too many take that path.
