As a bok supporter it’s sad seeing the tenor of some comments here; we had a few big chunks of luck coupled with guts & some skill & teamwork & won by the skin of our teeth. Let’s try to be more gracious in victory. I know many bok supporters & they’d all express similar sentiments to me i.e. ‘whew, that was close!’ Thanks for great chat guys; Matt an unbelievable talent.

Thanks Sean, its nice to hear a positive and kind comment from a Bok supporter. South Africa deserved to win in the end. They probably had the best temperament in the big knockout games and they had a few things go there way in tight games which every team needs. However, there is very little between South Africa, France, Ireland and New Zealand. They are all excellent teams capable of beating each other on a given day. If we were to run the tournament again any one of these four could win the cup. It is good for the sport that there is no outright dominant team as New Zealand were from 2010 to 2015 although I'm sure Kiwis will disagree.

@@neilmontgomery3470 can't speak for all kiwis but I think we're generally enjoying that the ABs are coming right, and enjoy the tight international game, but our domestic rugby is seriously stuffed. The rugby community here kinda suffering and a rwc win would've been quite nice and uplifting. Now, I'm particularly concerned about the future of the game here 🫤

To the OP, great comment. I'm in NZ and my SA mates a little mixed, but mostly very gracious. Certainly not like internet comments. Fwiw, some kiwis have gone off the deep end with conspiracy theories, but generally, most ppl agree that the Boks kicking, defence and discipline was the difference

@@imntg6649 yes of course they did. Maybe I could be more clear. France just had one tough match that they would have had to field their first team for and it was the first match of the pool, so they could literally cruise to the quarter with plenty of analysis of the quarter finalist opposition and able to rest or restore key players for it. And they didn’t even have to win that first match for a almost guaranteed spot given the remainder of the competition in their group. Ireland despite winning all games could not be certain of quarter until the completion of the last group game against Scotland, so we had to field a first team against nearly all.

The worst thing as an Irish fan was that the team didn't play to their potential. They were maybe 85-90% of where they were before. AB well deserved the win but you cant give a team like that such a lead in the first quarter. I think most of us would rather be number 4 or 5 coming into the WC and have a couple close losses before rather than this shit of being number 1 for the year or 2 before.

SA franchises operate on a FRACTION of the budget that, lets say, Leinster or Munster do (not to mention the English teams)! It makes the win that much more rewarding and deserving! Yes, our players are scattered around the world looking for a big pay day but then having to bring them all together for a relatively short period of time is remarkable!! Ireland get 95% of their players from Munster or Leinster so continuity is pretty easy!! That is the massive difference between SA and other nations! Imagine all our Boks played in domestic SA competitions!?!? 😮 Yes we learn from other competitions but continuity is often the key! Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie!! 🇿🇦🏆🇿🇦

They didn’t win because they came up against New Zealand who on the day showed up the game they played was decided by two or three decisions and events. The mentality is normally they crumble in quarter-finals and they didn’t do that this time. They were in it all the way to the end. Every time New Zealand tried to pull away Ireland drag themselves back into it. It was literally a 50-50 game it could’ve gone either way but someone had to take the loss unfortunately it was .

    • @PB22559

Ireland were #1 in the world ranking and had a huge winning streak until their QF. That's why they were considered one of the favorites to win it outright. They beat SA in the pool stages too which added to their impressive winning streak.
Did they deserve to win the world cup? No. They didn't have their best performance against NZ when it mattered most.
A lot has been said about the SA coaching ticket but SA have the best natural talent (forwards and backs) so the coaches have the best players to work with. NZ and France have some amazingly gifted players and they tend to play with more flair than the saffas but SA have the forwards to win the 50/50 battles and lightning wingers to go the length of the field when needed. Ireland are a very good side but they will never be able to truly compete with SAs strength in depth. How many of those current Irish 1st 15 would make the SA 23? Not many, is the answer. Maybe 5 or 6 players? That's it.
All the Irish players play their club rugby in Ireland but they still need to buy imports to compete at the highest level in Europe. Meanwhile, the best Boks are playing their club rugby all over the planet- Japan, France, England, Ireland etc and the saffa club sides are made up of exclusively home grown players.
Ireland are doing as good as they can with what they have. It's good to see them consistently competing with and beating sides like SA, NZ, France. Go back a few decades and Ireland were nowhere near the level they're at these days. Despite their QF exit, they're by far the most improved 'tier 1' side since rugby went pro 27 years ago. So, when you talk about mentality, you've got a point. That's what happens when historically your side were the favorites to win the wooden spoon every 5 nations game, not the grand slam.

    • @PB22559
      @PB22559 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@ciaranbrk Ireland didn't crumble but I think you'd agree with me that they didn't bring their A game for the QF? Unfortunately, we can't measure how much mentality played a factor in their performance. There's been a lot of hype around Irelands world class back row but they went missing in the QF. I honestly think Porter was hard done by at scrumtime on a couple of occasions but those are the breaks. Ireland bravely fought their way back into the game and had their chances to win it but ultimately they weren't good enough.
I think the biggest issue with Ireland is their backline and always has been. Ireland are not known for having game changing wingers. You've always been lacking in that department. When 4 of your starting backline are SH players, you know there's a problem in Ireland with home grown talent despite that fact you'll hear the Irish pundits telling us Ireland/Leinster have a conveyor belt of players. Take away the foreign born starters and you're looking at Jimmy O'Brien, Stockdale, Larmour... etc They're good players but none of them would start for NZ, SA or France, not even close. Realistically, Ireland can't compete 'strength in depth' wise with sides like SA.

The best team in the World is the one that won the World Cup. Get over it and except it. You can't sugar coat it to make Ireland sound better.

So Argentina and England are better than them. You beat a 14 man New Zealand team by 1 point, we were beaten by them by four points with us not playing at our best. It was a tight tournament with a lot of criticism about the draw.

Sorry no they aren’t. This Irish team only lost three times in two years they are better than the springboks. Showing up once every four years doesn’t make you the best if you’re don’t show up the three years in between. Haven’t won a rugby championship in four years.

Ireland were the best team in the world for 18 months and are now ranked number two. Everyone knows South Africa won the the World Cup so they are the best now. It's pathetic they way South Africans have to go on every Irish interest rugby site and troll Irish fans. Ireland are still one of the best teams in the world and the only team South Africa hasn't beaten in this World Cup cycle. They lost a tight match against one of the finalist who went on to lose the final by a single point. Furthermore, the ingredients are there for further achievement with continued success of the Irish provinces and a great player development program in the country as a whole. The players that are coming up will be better than the current ones and we have some of the best coaches in the world to develop them. We have only really been a world class team for about 5 years now, it's just the beginning.

Ireland were getting way ahead of themselves thinking they were going to win the whole thing and gave complete disregard to other capable sides particularly NZ. They had the quarter final won before they had even played it. A lot of the Irish commentary and supporter comments were totally dismissive of other strong sides so they received a rude awakening when beaten, once again, in a quarter final that many of us true rugby pundits predicted. As for the eventual winner South Africa, they were lucky to have won when incapable of scoring any trys. No real highlights to look at and never should have been allowed to beat England. Personally having watched every world cup since the first, this was the absolute worst one for officiating and kinda looked pre-scripted.

Ireland celebrated beating SA like they had won the world cup. In hindsight the players need to own this and say this was a massive mistake. They did not control the emotion, you cant blame the fans thats what they do, the players shouldnt have celebrated with them, I think this cost them the world cup. If they had beat NZ, I firmly believe Ireland would have won the world cup.

For feck sake lads you lost. At least say you lost when you wanted to win. Jesus say you should have won. Say you were beaten when you should have won. Be men. Earn respect. Go back and try again. Don't accept
