- The Dark Island: also known as An Oileán Dorcha, The Dark Island Lament, Dark Isle, Dr Mackays Farewell To Creagorry, Dr. McInnes’s Farewell To South Uist.
The words of this beautiful version of The Dark Island are by David Silver and the tune was first copyrighted by Ian MacLaughlan. It was written for the BBC film "The Dark Island" in 1963. This was filmed mainly in South Uist, but was about Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides.
This is a song that I have fallen in love with, and is another replacement video for one I took down last year.

A Lovely haunting sound Dave - really nice song and great playing.
I uploaded one this morning (a Bee Gees cover) and YT muted the sound due to copyright issues . So I've taken it off as not much good without sound. Lol.

Yes it is an emotional melody so I used the neck pickup to make the tone more mellow. YT are a pain in the neck with these copyright issues.

BurnsErnst Yes - Tried 3 times and without the name in the title. So they check the music even though the BT & guitar is all by us.
We will alter the BT and try tomorrow.

It is all about the composition rights of the song, not who is playing it.
In theory, if you recorded yourself singing a song in the shower and posted it on TH-cam, the YT software could detect the song and the song copyright owner and ban your posting for singing their song without permission.

It`s a top tune Dave and one of best ever . Such a haunting song from my Country . So I`m going to be hyper critical here if you don`t mind .
Yes you`ve done a fair job here but I`ve heard the benchmark version . Yes I don`t like to say it but you`ll forgive me if I make comparisons with a friend of ours . Yes it`s our Italian stallion Luca ..I`ve never heard anything that just fits the song as his version . It`s what it`s all about Scotland ,the Islands .the sound. You have to feel the song Dave . It`s getting into the Islands and Scotland .It may be that you are an Essex man I don`t know but it`s Hank Marvin doing Rabbie Burns . It`s all about the atmosphere of the Islands , the mist ,the whisky .You have to get the feel of Scotland in your veins .
So saying that I did say I was going to be hyper critical of this and I will be more so than anyone else on this one . It`s perfect if you haven`t heard and know how it should be done I just wish I could speak to you and I can`t play but I could explain how it should be . Still it`s a decent job you`ve done here and it`s me being as I said H C and I still enjoyed it as it`s such a great number .
So have no fear I still give you 9 / 10 for this and I am pleased although you might not think it that you gave this a go . Forgive my crit as it is hyper but it`s what I hear .

I don`t usually make a crit like this Mark . It`s not that Dave played bad he did well and as good as any out there but it`s a pop version really .It`s one of these tunes that is very atmospheric and haunting .You have to "feel " the song and Dave did a Hank Marvin to it .That can`t be bad and that`s why I still gave a 9 / 10 to him for a sterling performance but it just lacks that feel it needs.
If You go to Luca`s channel you`ll find this tune . I can`t do two things at once while on Dave`s channel . Luca really surprised me here as he being an Italian did it so well .I think it`s because Luca really is a pro and has music running through his veins and can bring it out . Dave`s a brilliant guitarist make no mistake about that but he`s not Luca and would be first to admit it .
I`ll sign off here and get link .Dave will have heard it but he might want another listen .

Luca's "The Dark Island" is superlative! He is a maestro musician with the wonderful skills of making his own backing tracks.
I am a hobbyist who can only use the work of others in a backing track.
So I can only play a tune in the style created by the backing track, and cannot alter it in any way. A tune can be played in many styles, and the backing track I used is a much more relaxed, and a less Scottish traditional than Luca's version.
I am neither Scottish, nor Italian but I believe I put as much feeling and emotion into playing this tune as I possibly could because, for me, this is one of the most wonderful tunes I have ever heard.
Whether Your critisisms are justified or not, they are outside of my control.

why did you change the original melody so much? I think it entitles the respect of the manner in which it was written and recorded by Ian Powrie's band originally in the 60s for the TV show that made it the popular tune it is !
