I’m glad you are been fair to the company also. It is frustrating going back and forth with issues and parts not fitting but, its part of the game when you are dealing with custom stuff. At least you have a company working with you. Most won’t because when things don’t work out they get bashed. Here is an idea (if you have some time on your hands, and a 3d printer). You can ask them for the cad file for the rocker mount, modify it, print it and get it to fit. Then have them make those modifications to just 1 set and test it on the head. And if it fits, make the rest. Not sure if this is going to be an option, since most companies outsource their machinning overseas. Other then that, sending the head in is the best option.
Dude this will end up helping everyone upgrading their 8.1 and that company to make a better product and possibly make your 8.8 even stronger 💪💪💪!!! Keep up the good work LT and as builders ourselves we totally get it and understand, hope you start feeling better soon. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
No worries on the venting! Where there is a will there is a way and yes this is a setback but it can be fixed and I know you will come out ahead with it! I really enjoy your channel your builds are incredible!! Keep you chin up and it will all work out! Merry Christmas to you and your family!! :)
I have full faith in your ability to figure it out. I was a fan of your work at your previous job. And was excited when you started this channel and have not missed a single upload yet.
As someone that's possibly building a new project I've been considering starting this next year, I appreciate you showing us the reality of what we really have to consider when taking on something like this. Rebuilding is one thing, but building from scratch is a whole other beast! Can't wait to see the solution you and the manufacturers come up with. Temporary setbacks sometimes create the coolest products, even if they are one-offs.
Man, you can tell those rockers not fitting was a gut punch. You handled it better than I would've & are keeping positive. When you're putting your heart & soul into something you truly love doing setbacks can really hit hard sometimes. I'm glad you're not letting it get to you & I hope you realize that you have the coolest channel on TH-cam & I don't say that lightly. Hopefully you can get this sorted out in a timely manner because I'm really stoked for this build. I probably won't ever have enough $$ to do anything remotely like this & it makes me sad, but it makes it bearable being able to live vicariously through you. Thanks for great content & for doing the coolest builds I've seen.
I understand what you are experiencing LT. Ordered a sweet rotating assembly for a turbo 5.3 but received one for a 4.8 after 4 months. Then got refund, but what I originally ordered was a year out. Then just piecemealed what was available. Then machine shop told me I was a fool for just getting a bunch of parts that would cost so much to balance and asked why I didn't just get a kit... I've done a bunch of builds over the years but never seen parts and lead time being this much of a problem. Just is how things are the last few years. We are learning and will adapt. Next time i'll just go the junk yard/swap meet route and save 3 Gs by getting parts off the shelf even if i have to drive like 500 miles. Have a great holiday and no worries, the more time you spend working a solution out, the better it will be in the end!! 👍
Raylar should be able to email T&D the CAD model and they can fab the correct parts. Miscommunications happen all the time. Companies also make engineering changes without telling their suppliers. T&D should keep that setup on file as a revision in case someone with older Raylar heads wants the same setup. Merry Christmas and I hope Santa has some nice gifts for you.
So keep going LT, In my opinion You are one of the greatest engine builders in all TH-cam channels honestly. No body is like you in the attention to details, you are the best. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
The Gen 7 is defiantly a frustrating build on a good day. I waited months to get a cam for one of mine and it was the wrong grind when I pulled it out of the box. You are building a real unicorn and the frustration will all be forgotten when it runs and makes the power you're shooting for. I can't wait to see this engine on the dyno....!
I feel your pain brother, I'm a motorcycle mechanic for over 20 years and I have ran into parts that don't fit right many times! So no worries man, we understand more than you know!
Hopefully they move a little faster for you as this is their fault, but it's not a super big deal. I'm glad you kept us updated and showed us the not-so-glamorous part of engine building. I'm thinking of doing an oddball engine myself because it looks like a challenge. I'm already currently trying to interface a LS engine into a ranger such that it's not a chop job, and that's not easy.
Every time I look at "Ugly Truck" I want one. I have a 05 Sierra 4 door 4wd daily and a RCSB 2wd 07 Classic on a Beltech drop but I REALLY like that body style extended cab 👍🏁
Merry Christmas and hope it works out without taking a lot of time. Patience is a great virtue but it comes through tribulations.😂Love watching your builds. I can’t believe how stout that stock 8.1 is and what you have done with it and it is still together!
Thanks for sharing... even with more normal builds its something that happens all too frequently so its great to see it happens and to hear your take on dealing with it with class!
We really do appreciate all of your videos, no matter how frustrating it may seem for various parts that you've been waiting on for months. Always glad you share that with us. These truck builds you've done have greatly helped me out, all because of your thorough explanations of each project and your findings along the way!
We've all been there man! Like you said, it's part of the hobby. Sometimes you just gotta take a step back and take a break. Looking forward to the finished product!
Thanks LT life is very frustrating. I find most times things are never what they seem but I appreciate you keeping on. That's what we do in life I reckon and I wish you the best with your builds it's great knowledge you share especially since I am a mechanic for a living. Merry Christmas yall
As frustrating as these problems are LT, this is what makes yours one of my favorite channels to watch. You, like me, favor oddball builds. Unlike the TV Studio shows that can throw obscene amounts of money around and make problems not be problems, you are doing real world builds, and having real world problems that we all can relate to. This whole project screams "ballin on a budget" like most of us have to do. You have to order parts in a strategic order to align with your budget and your goals. I think I speak for most people when I say that is what makes your channel so relatable and enjoyable.
LT PLEASE READ THIS! Dude man… your voice sounds like you’re either getting over a cold or you just spent the past 20 minutes screaming at the top of your lungs throwing shit around your shop. I’ve been there and I just want to say I am sorry for your lost time, loosing your time on builds in my opinion is worse than loosing money. You can always make money but time will remain in the past forever. I hope the company you did these parts through can help you out. If not I just hope you know your channel has inspired so many people to get their hands dirty and their knuckles bloody, I know I’m just some rando on your channel’s comment section… but I am a regular viewer that smashed the subscribe button years ago with the notification bell turned on, and this applies to so many that watch your videos when you post them. We all know you will keep on keeping on because that’s just what LT does. You are the man!
I know how you feel... I waited 8 months for an upgraded, deep sump oil pan for my 360 Magnum engine only for it to be the wrong one. It wasn't the oil pan maker's fault nor was it the distributor's fault, but that didn't make it less stressful. I was unaware that Dodge made 360 engines with different sized oil pan rails at the rear main and front seal area.
Wow LT I'm also for what has happened. But good thing the company that you bought the rockerarm set from is willing to fix the problem and that says a lot about the company.
I am Building a 69 Camaro for a friend and i have run into the worst parts fitment problems i have ever seen. Everything from new hardlines with bad flares to parts bolt holes not aligning ,incorrect premade hoses, you name it,so i feel your frustration!
It has been a problem with every industry I have been involved in. I feel for you and the frustration gets too overwhelming for one to take!! I have built engines in the automotive industry, ATV, Dirtbikes, Snomobiles, watercraft, and go peds. It's all the same crap!!
Yea man it happens. I ordered valve springs for my 94 Z28 LT1 motor and they coil bind. Motor was out and on a stand, now I gotta change valve springs in the car…. Sucks. But what ya just gotta walk away, vent it out how ever you gotta and solve the problem. Also just so your aware, none of us are gunna give you shit if your truck isn’t done next spring. We get it.
With my budget nothing fits correctly! I've purchased a few parts that where actually designed for what I needed and man it's nice. Usually though, I can only get some BS that ain't quite right. It sucks but all we can do is keep pushing!
This, is why everyone doesn't have one, @LT..... I battled same types of issues, through the 90's with "bolt on" parts for a 5 year old car. It's what makes the final product. So much more, than anyone ever sees.
When life give you lemons then you make lemonade. Hit plan B, get the 4x4 truck built use the 8.1 that you have & when the new one is done put it in!!! That's a bummer LT! Keep your head up man!!! Merry Christmas & it will be a Very Happy New Year LT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel you. I’ve been waiting since the beginning of may to get a simple off the shelf cam that still hasn’t shown up after being promised it wouldn’t take longer than 3 weeks.
Glad to be here to listen when you need it bro! Been following / watching since the Power nation days!!!!!! I know you'll be able to figure something out, and I know it won't take 5 FREAKING MONTHS to do it either ;) Those certainly is a trick looking rocker setup! Can't wait to see/hear that bad boy sing! And @ 7k+Rpm!?! That's gonna be some incredible noise! :D
I appreciatethe way you are with people about the struggles we go threw tri to build a dream vehicle or even a cheap race car every thing for me always spirals in the way I wasn’t wanting to go but I go there for the extra power but it always seems to be a mistake I have questions an problem try to finish a truck Chevy working on for 8 years myself what I learned was from people like yourself an others but when people see my stuff they say everything I did was wrong an I’m tired of buying everything twice please give me advice on my build if you have time
We all have issues like that from time to time! Hang in there LT, yeah there may have been a slight revision to head or something just sucks you had to wait 5 months to find out! Hopefully the rocker manufacturer will have an easy fix and at least you know by sending them the heads they will be correct when they come back!
I do admire your desire to go down the roads less traveled and sometimes that will/does bite you in the ass, Now hopefully there is some Ice Cream in the freezer and have a Merry Christmas with the Fam. It'll work out in the long run. :)
Bro we are here for you to vent… trust me we are still gonna be watching… merry Christmas brotha… sometimes a couple days off gives you a bit of clarity to reassess everything
@@LawrenceTolman just followed u on ig, ill be starting the tear down on that step side obs i just bought tomorrow. gotta fix compression leak on cylinders 1 and 8 wish me luck lol
It happens more often than people think. I'm starting out in a machine shop for engines. It's tough with parts now my cash flow is horrible can't get parts on a timely fashion.
Frustration is part of the deal when you try something different don't give up your fans have faith in you don't lose faith in yourself and have good holidays.
Merry Christmas! Bummer, but like you said, all custom parts make big problems, my buddy who works at a major aftermarket company has a saying, the problem is that your car doesn’t fit our parts, not the other way around. We have all been there, I’m building a car with all aftermarket parts also, and I have this problem all the time.
I’ve watched almost all your videos, your a awesome car/truck guy. You’ll get it all squared away like you always do, just a minor setback. I wish I lived closer to hangout and help 👍🏻
Im also using the gen 7 style block but im using the early style gen 4 head I had to relocate 2 head bolt on each side and plug a couple of existing bolt holes.this cost couple hundred dollars but the availability of good aftermarket is well worth it.
You're gonna lose the shop! - As a guy who also wonders the unbeaten path, I appreciate the honesty in this vlog. I think we forget that just like all social media and tv, it ain't perfect all the time. Delays happen. Miscommunications happen. It's not the end of the world.. and hey, now you got TWO uploads out of that valve train. We know we'll see an update when you get it sorted. Cheers
That's why you buy quality products. The manufacturer works with you when you have these problems if you ask for help, like they are in this case. Good update LT
I had bought T&D rockers for a trick flow twisted heads, and the rocker stands were a 2 piece, had to make a jig and then weld the stands together to work properly. Also added lash caps to the top of the valves to make sure I had good valve train geometry. Should have been a 1 piece design.
Before you ship that, and spend another five months. You can use piston ring gauge to check exact clearance, and I've seen rockers set in "sideline". As in to say as long as the distance from the rocker bolts to pushrod is exact, then the snout-tail alignment is pretty forgiving. I'd try shimming the rocker to the pushrod and checking contact point, you may find the top of the pushrod rides off center but clears the rocker rotation. 8000rpm can flex stuff, but not THAT much. Bigger stuff limits vibration, not so much flex, as flex is uniform to force whereas vibration actually breaks the carbon bonds. Just use a flat sheet rather then washers as the shim. Ordering many (I'm assuming the whole bank is uniform out of spec) piston feeler gauges that match the gap and punching bolt holes is a CHEEP FAST go to for this. Just need to check for contact by rotating with a wrench the first few times like with connecting rods on a stroker kit.
Just checked their web page, if you got the aluminum AND steel set that might be the root of the milling issue. And I would question the mixing of metals THERE due to flex and heat, steel and aluminum DEFINITELY flex at different rates. That CAN not always will but can break or strip bolts that interconnect. Like with the LS exhaust bolts that like to snap, aluminum block with steel bolts on a heat source.
Also if the solid shaft is symmetric, flipping it 180° may also be it. Do the bolt holes go all the way through? They may also be driver/passenger specific, might be worth the repeated build and tear down, before shipping them back and forth.
I’m building a ‘77 F100 with a Ford 460 built to a 521 stroker, with modern fuel injection mated to a built 4l80e on custom airride with a Crown Vic swapped front crossmember. I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOURE GOING THROUGH 😂😂 it’s been fun though 😅😬
Totally get it, it happens. We all feel for you on the wait too, that so sucks. You can measure twice, re check everything, double check the part number before you hit the pay button and something always ends up wrong. I know you;ll get there and we will wait....... Terry
LT, as my mentor told me early on in my engine building career, “sometimes pioneers get arrows in their asses” As you have realized, this is all part of the custom engine building process. You’ll get it figured out but it will try your patience.
Aim building Mopar 408 stroker and everything back order parts are pain to get in Puerto Rico I'm waiting for a trick flow intake for almost 18 month and the scat crankshafts has been 7 months I feel part of your pain but good luck on your engine bield good luck form 🇵🇷
You’ve got to ask yourself when you decided to go with this company for valvetrain parts for the 8.1 did their website say perfect on it? I doubt it. Take the next step and keep on going! Thanks for the videos all year and look forward to 2023 !
I don't blame you. If I spent the money and waiting that long I would be extremely frustrated. I run a business and to me if your going to take on a job and charge someone, it's on you to make sure it's right. They should have verified the S/N on the head or talked to the manufacturer to get a mock up set or something. In business it takes 10 happy customers to make up for one mad customer.
Well, when you’re the trend setter, you’re the one that has to pave the road for the rest of us that follow. So I don’t mind being your therapist since you’re saving me from needing one in the near future.
Welcome to the world of 'Out of the norm'... At least you have a way forward. I think my project has *the worst* engine choice, but it fits and is what I wanted. The hassles end up being worth it in the end.
Yeah , raylar has had 2 versions of the head. First heads were too thin for clamp loads in a couple of spots. Second run fixed it. Raylar doesn't make the heads, they are made by profiler.
Put 342 gears in your build and you'll have more trouble trying to figure out how to slow it down at the top end of the track cuz you'll be going much faster
Any chance they could just make a spacer that goes in that gap? As long as the rocker tips line up you should be gtg. Probly be faster to maker then new risers. Just a thought.. You'll look back on this and laugh. WE always do. Venting is cool, no worries. Remember it's a journey. Merry Christmas and greetings from the farm in S Carolina!
One off cylinder heads with custom rockers, there absolutely is going to be some hours spent making them work and its going to be expensive. Take them to a shop that's comfortable with them and bite the bullet, it's less expensive in the long run and you'll have a better product. The other option imo is to follow a known recipe, t&d and jewelry have an excellent products that fit all the big name cylinder heads with minimal pain and suffering. There's a massive difference between engine assembly and engine building and the latter takes significantly more time and competence
This allows us builders to k ow its not just us dealing with these odd issues. We have all done something first and know it's not easy. Almost cry and give up difficult. But during one of those moments a friend told me something that looking back was so true and I learned so much. God does not give you more than you can handle (maybe cosmic mother /energy). You have been given this to teach you another way of looking at it. Literally look at it from different angles and maybe see another possibility
Unfortunately some of these more niche builds run into these complications a lot. SBC, BBC, SBF, BBF it’s all pretty much figured out and you just select the pieces and order. Good on you for the drive.
damn , that sucks bad. its good to get this out there though. the company should have known and informed buyers about possible issues, at the same time we shouldnt kill them because shit happens and its cool to have access to these things. but damn 5 months and it looks very expensive. lets hope they make good on it and maybe something for your lost time.
I love you showing shortcomings, failures, and challenges and it separates you from the shows on TV. Great job LT
I’m glad you are been fair to the company also. It is frustrating going back and forth with issues and parts not fitting but, its part of the game when you are dealing with custom stuff. At least you have a company working with you. Most won’t because when things don’t work out they get bashed.

Right there with ya on the frustration factor but? In the end? this is going to be KILLER build. Keep making update vids and we'll keep watching!
It happens to all of us some time or another. Don't let it keep you down, us fans want to continue to see you build awesome stuff!
We really do appreciate all of your videos, no matter how frustrating it may seem for various parts that you've been waiting on for months. Always glad you share that with us. Gotta love custom builds .
When doing custom stuff for customers they rarely understand why the shop is taking so long .
We've all been there man! Like you said, it's part of the hobby. Sometimes you just gotta take a step back and take a break. Looking forward to the finished product!
I appreciate your approach, and your channel is one of my 'don't miss' auto youtube channels!

Hey man keep up the good work. U might be the first guy I seen actually build a 8.1 style engine,. Love the work man hope it gets figured out
thanks! there are not a lot of guys building 8.1 based engines for sure
I appreciate that!
Bummer… Hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas!
I want to build the 8.1 I have in my garage so please keep up the journey.
Im also using the gen 7 style block but im using the early style gen 4 head I had to relocate 2 head bolt on each side and plug a couple of existing bolt holes.this cost couple hundred dollars but the availability of good aftermarket is well worth it.
Don't Worry Be Happy, Merry Christmas. I'm sure when the motor comes together it'll all be worth it.
Trailblazing a new path is never easy.
On the flipside, I've been using std Harland Sharp rockers with a stud girdle @ 8000 rpm for a few years now.
I feel you bro, I ordered the Holley terminator x efi on June 24th, still no end in sight.
Well, it's a unique bulid it's a challenge for 8.1. It's definitely good to vent now and then.
1500 hp will come & it will be good.
Happy holidays 🎄.
Daring to be different has its price. You will get through this!
Totally get it, it happens. We all feel for you on the wait too, that so sucks. You can measure twice, re check everything, double check the part number before you hit the pay button and something always ends up wrong. I know you;ll get there and we will wait....... Terry
I do not blame you. I want to rant. I want to see your truck run with the 535. I want to see the final results.
It happens man. I’ve been in aviation for almost 20 years and every time something like this happens, it’s a straight kick in the gut.
Hang in there, you’ll beat this thing yet. Merry Christmas!
Sorry for your frustration. But I’m sure your persistence will pay off.
I like that fact that you don’t do the normal.
Merry Christmas LT stay up you got this 💪
Well, when you’re the trend setter, you’re the one that has to pave the road for the rest of us that follow.
So I don’t mind being your therapist since you’re saving me from needing one in the near future.
Welcome to the world of 'Out of the norm'... At least you have a way forward. I think my project has *the worst* engine choice, but it fits and is what I wanted. The hassles end up being worth it in the end.
We understand n feel for your frustrations.
No!!!!! I can’t wait any longer for this build.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your family
That sucks! And they look so awesome too. I guess that's hot roddin though, I feel your pain.
Standards just aren't what they use to be but like you said it will work out 👍
Thank you for starting this channel
Merry Christmas, LT to you and yours.
At least you have a good attitude about it.
A lot of guys would be crapping all over the company that made the parts.
So... Good on ya.....
Any chance they could just make a spacer that goes in that gap? As long as the rocker tips line up you should be gtg. Probly be faster to maker then new risers. Just a thought.. You'll look back on this and laugh. WE always do. Venting is cool, no worries. Remember it's a journey. Merry Christmas and greetings from the farm in S Carolina!
keep on keeping on! love the channel
Hang in there LT. Merry Christmas.
Maybe you could just JB Weld those exhaust rockers in ?
Your heading into uncharted waters, need to go with a tried and true package less hp but also less headaches!
Goodtimes!!! I'm sure they will figure it out for you hopefully sooner than later!!!
Don't let it keep you down
One off cylinder heads with custom rockers, there absolutely is going to be some hours spent making them work and its going to be expensive.
Moving the valves in the heads also moves the valve reliefs in the pistons....
Merry Christmas LT 👍🏽
