I took the circle button idea as being like a focus or concentration button/impulse. At least that was how I relayed it for my UA Multiverse story. Basically, Sly has to focus on that point and the instincts his ancestors fostered would trigger in his mind/body.
As for a lot of the Sly 2 narrative issues, i think some of that might be due to.... not so much crunch, but SP left themselves with a short enough window that they couldn't explore everything with the characters
Like how Neyla was Rajan's daughter in one version of the story. Him possibly abandoning her might have lead to her wanting to take everything. Also, it was made clear by the ending that the Clockwerk parts would much harder to destroy. They survived a volcano, multiple explosions and shocks, and the brute force Sly, Murry, and Klaw gang likely put them through. And it was all thanks to the Hate Chip, most likely the central piece of the Clockwerk Brain, that they remained pristine.

47:10 so i think this is one of those ideas that in hindsight its not put to the best of use but in a later installment it actually adds a lot, being Slys so defensive and conservative of his families memories, values and traditions only to have those put into question by the time he is confronted by Dr M and what kind of person his father as well as his ancestors actually were like, so for the moment its not explored but in Hindsight its an not bad
