Using the HX Stomp with the HX Effects

  • In this video I create a modular Line 6 HX family rig by running the HX Stomp in the FX loop of the HX Effects, which is effectively using the 4 Cable Method on the Stomp. This setup is ideal for people who want Helix tones in a more travel friendly format that can break down into smaller pieces.
    HX Stomp Preset: line6.com/customtone/tone/468...
    HX Effects Preset: line6.com/customtone/tone/468...
I realized after I finished making this video that I had my Global EQ turned on. You may need to tweak your Global EQ to get the presets to sound similar.

Thank you Richie! This video is so timely. I was just planning to figure out how to use HXS and HXFX for some fly gigs next week! I want to express huge gratitude to you for your generosity and help. I just discovered you and your vids recently and have downloaded all of your HXS and HXFX presets, including the one you made for your Dad. You are, *by far* the most helpful/knowledgeable resource for these Line 6 units.

Another great video Richie, a much better approach than some other (Canadian) clowns who shall remain nameless. No rambling on and on, putting on a solo performance for every example. Just enough review without all the redundancy seen from other "gear gurus" who get lost in their own egos.

Great video Richie, and this definitely scratches a few itches for me. First, the LT is a bit more svelte than the full-go Helix, but not by much, so this truly backpack-packable rig is a huge plus for me. Second, the HX Effects helps overcome some of the limitations of the HX Stomp in terms of available blocks and cable routing options. Third, using the HX Effects as the MIDI-powered "brain" is something I vastly underestimated. Finally, this type of setup allows the player to use whatever modeler/preamp they want. Love it!

Hi Richie, I learned more from you about the HX Effects and HX Stomp than from any other or the manuals. I have them both on 2 different pedal boards. I was considering to change the Effects for a Helix (I will never get rid of the Stomp), but this video convinced me to merge my pedal boards! I do not use the expression pedal, since I like my Whammy DT and Xotic Wah, so this solution will be perfect for me. Thanks for sharing this great idea. (I immediately subscribed to you channel!)

I have a Helix floor and even though both the HX Stomp and HX Effects are great units. I'm still wondering why Line 6 didn't incorporate an L6 Link into HX Effects, which would simplify hookups with the the Helix and keep the signal flow in the digital realm. Still hoping they will make that addition in the future, would love to have the additional DSP.

Just grabbed an HX Effects to pair with my Stomp I grabbed last year. I use the stomp mainly for amp modeling and will now keep my effects mostly of the Hx effects to free up some blocks. Would you recommend me plugging my guitar input to the HX effects than run that into the input for the stomp? Would this cause much of a routing issue?

  • @PoppaFoz
    @PoppaFoz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Awesome vid man. Having just purchased a Hx effects to minimise my footprint, I’m considering ditching the amp too. Quick question. I noticed you didn’t utilise the fx loop in the stomp like regular 4cm with an amp. The way you’ve hooked it up, could the same be done with a strymon iridium?

I’m not sure if this is something that has already been commented but to make it easier as far as I making the right preset correspond between the two, all you have to do is go to global settings, over to preferences, scroll one page over and in the third column there will be a thing that says numbering, there you can switch it from its default (14a as he said as an example) and switch it over to the 0-125. You’ll want to do this on both the stomp and effects for it to make sense.

  • @stupid5pin
    @stupid5pin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My thought process: "I really like that volume swell before the solo on the recording of this song. I should really get an expression pedal for my Stomp so I can do that easily live. But if I do that, I need to get a midi footswitch so I can still switch song banks, since my expression jack will be used by the expression pedal. Well, might as well check the Stomp group on Facebook and see what people recommend for midi controllers. Oh crap, this dude has an HX Effects on his board with his Stomp! That's actually a pretty good idea! How much does that cost? Oh! I should watch a video and get an idea of how to use that with the Stomp..."
And that's how I ended up buying an HX Effects and an expression pedal today.
I've read some differing opinions for setup as well, but I think this might be the most ideal for my needs, but I'd likely switch to use the Stomp as the midi controller and use it to flip song presets like I was doing with my dual footswitch already.

Seeing one of your other videos about setting up a wet-dry-wet config using Line6 Helix pedalboard, made we wonder how you would go about and do it using the Stomp (for the dry, and cab-sim for the wet/wet maybe) and the HX Effects (for the wet/wet then I guess). And still use the HX Effect as "control center". I really got intrigued/inspired by both videos.

As others have mentioned it's easier to just buy the LT. Having said that, I'm using the same Stomp and FX combo and I think it has it's place. There might be occasions when a Stomp is enough, then you can rip it off the board and take it in a gigbag. Other times it's nice to have the connectivity and additional effects/control options.
Also a tip: when browsing the preset list in HX Stomp, it displays the corresponding PC number in the lower right corner of the screen.

What I was wondering though is, does keeping the signal chain of the stomp to a minimum reduce the gap between preset switching or is it still better to rely on snapshots for amp changes within a song?

So one thing I don’t get is he only has one send/return going to the stomp. How is he still having effects in the loop of the “amp” while also a still getting the cab sim when he’s going to the board from the effects. To me it would seem you’d have to go back to the stomp and out to the board from there. It’s certainly working snd he obviously knows what he’s doing but how is it still getting the cab and all that whole going out to the board from the effects?

Hey richie, huge fan of urs.. I've been using the HX effects for a few years now and it's been life-changing lately I've been thinking about getting the Helix floor but this video sparked my interest cuz buying the stomp would be more affordable... do you see any drawbacks with using the HX effects and stomp versus just a helix floor I wouldn't really be doing any parallel routing or complicated signal change just pretty much 8 pedals and amp

    Great video! 2 questions...
1- In the notes you mentioned using global eq. Did you adjust global on effects or the stomp?
2- I followed your instruction on setting up command to switch stomp to preset 34 b when pressing 14 a on effects. It works but I have to press the 14a patch twice. On the first press the stomp goes to 18 something the second press it goes to 34b which is the proper patch. Is this right?

I had exactly this problem. To fix it you have to go to global settings, midi / tempo and set the MIDI / PC tx to off. This makes it so that when you change presets in the effects, it does not automatically change the preset on the stomp. If you want this default behaviour for most of your presets but not all, you can add a sligh timer to your command, say 200 ms, and that lets the effect override the default program change.

Wondering about how effective it is to program both units with HX Edit? I’m assuming the would not show as one and you would either need two sessions open (which it may not let you) or you would have to do each separately. I never seen to feel comfortable programing with the knobs.

George Hendrix gives you two sessions Seperate from each other to configure, very fluid and easy

Thought I wanted a Helix floor until I had an idea about using these two. You have confirmed how well it will work! And on top of which, I'm assuming that I can sign an expression pedal to the stomp as well as the HX Effects? All together comes in about 2/3 of the price of a Helix floor 😁

I create tracks all day... and used to use Pod Farm 2 to go thru hundreds of cool presets looking for inspiration for the next part I was tracking. There were so many cool fx chains (and song/artist styles) people made to download free, so there were hundreds of tones/sounds I would have never dialed in that I could use. Now I'd like to add something on my studio pedalboard ...to add that kind of variety of pre-made flavors I could use for my recordings. Does the HX Effect allow me to load up a bunch of presets like that... and do they still offer a forum to find & download for HX Effects? I use a Kemper for most amp tones now so that part is not needed. Thanks!

what if the amp does not have an effects loop to run the 4 cable method? would this work running into the front of the amp?

derek merrell you could but you need to make sure the amp is as clean as it can be and keep the eq flat as possible. The preamp might color your tone a be so it would be best to dial all your tone settings using the amp.....

I'm only a quarter the way through the video so this question might be jumping the gun.
But how is 4cm different then running the Stomp in the fx loop of the HX Effects? I'd imagine running it in the fxloop of the Effects would be the same but easier to set up and freeing up the fx loop and a block on the Stomp

Is there any way to get an amp sound from ONLY the HX Effects? i.e. - not using an external amp simulator, stomp or other?

    • @RichieCastellano

The HX Effects is the only product in the line that does not have amp simulation. However it does have IR capabilities so if you have an IR that sounds like whatever amp you want, you could theoretically use that, but the real answer to your question is no.
