    After seeing the weld it’s amazing that it lasted as long as it did. At lest the bike fell of at a low speed and not at highway speeds.

    For the KTM you have to find a way to stop or limit the pivoting and stabilize the bike, the leverage the bike transmits to the hitch when you are offroad is huge

    Can we all take a moment to appreciate how great walmarts are as a home base in these times of crisis and repair? I almost lost my bike off the back of my last camper hitch hauler on a previous journey, if it wasn't for the random cheap bungee i had going from the handlebars to the ladder, that bike would have been spread across a Texas highway.

      I do appreciate them - but most wal marts I've been running into dont allow overnight RV parking

    I'd say this is even more a testament of the Ultimate MX Hauler! From the video it appeared the bike was still solidly in place on the rack itself, albeit on the ground :) I've been researching them and was curious how solid the bike was on the rack, but this shows it's bomber. Thanks for the footage!

    I'm trailering my ktm around Utah right now! Just do your riding in the mountains.
    I dont hitch haul any more. Instead I took a 5x10 landscape trailer with 15"wheels, single 3500lb axle, and moved the axle to under the springs instead of over - raised trailer deck dramatically for offroad. And I added two, large ,HD Ridgid, locking, steel, jobsite boxes to trailer for massive secure storage.
    Getting very hard to avoid Chinese components....they're everywhere.

    From SURPRISE, AZ - Well, to be fair, the Ultimate MX Hauler didn’t fail, it was that cheap Chinese riser, which by the way, the top portion of that is designated light duty. Dirt bike might of been a bit too much.

    I used to use a Moto jack rack and kinda liked it, but it would wobble around so much it would egg out the hitch pin holes, it got so bad I couldn't get it removed because of the mushroomed metal till I pulled my spare tire and beat it out with a hammer! I now use a tray type with 2 receivers and it's really solid now. Hauling a dirt bike is a pain sometimes but I justify it much of the time as a lifeboat in case my rig breaks down in addition to hitting trails of course. I use a plated 500 exc so it's more versatile though for whatever. Love your vids dude keep on keepin on!

    I always wondered what happened to the dirt bike. Now I know. I really enjoyed the dirt bike sequences. The saying that there's no camping setup that's perfect is true. Compromise is the name of the game. Sometimes you just don't feel like compromising anymore. Love your shows Phil. Take care. Vaughn

    you should get an on-board-welder, watch a few youtube videos, and practice little bit.!. i bought a "ready welder ii" used on ebay for $150 (but originally new $650). it runs on two car batteries and it fits under my xj seat. all you need is flux core wire, welding helmet, and gloves. a little angle grinder would also be great for cutting, cleaning, and any metal prep while out on the trail

  • @jameschavez7069
    @jameschavez7069 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    3 Point receiver solves the bike rocking and swaying which will fatigue almost any single receiver setup over time. its a 2" center receiver with 2 more 1" receivers off to either side.

  • @lostman65
    @lostman65 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i sometimes travel with my dual sport on the back of my tiny tacoma using a trailer hitch rack. i'm always worried about it. i go on frequent trips to utah/nevada/cal and sometimes i bring it with me and sometimes i don't. when i don't have it regret not bringing it every time. when i do have it, i never regret bringing it... i just have a bit more stress and some guilt for not riding it much.
    the moral of the story.... if you can trust your rack, bring it. it looks pretty sick on the back of your truck

    Thanks for sharing your story. Good to see people living the life they want to live. The first time i viewed one of your videos i thought to myself, i wonder if that bike mount has ever failed. i knew it was a matter of time before it snapped due to metal fatigue. Glad to see it happened on dirt and not the highway. Keep the stories coming. 🖒

    Hey Phil! told you in your hauler presentation video that would happen right there, only thing missing for it not to happen was two simple straps to ensure no movement of the assembly! It broke under fatigue, weld it back, secure movement and you're good to go! :)

    • @Down2Mob
      @Down2Mob  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Two other guys with bike in Mexico had the sand trouble. Crack and hanging. What it is the bouncing is stressing the metal or weld. You need to put 2 strap to the hinges of the door. It’s about leverage that bar taking a few thousand pound on ever bouncy

    Time to put a Premier Power Welder under the hood, Phil. With 2 starting batteries on that Cummins you're halfway there. With the money you get from selling the KTM you'll be money ahead and be able to handle a lot more of the unforeseen things that come your way. The road has a way of showing you what is and isn't necessary in a hurry and how simplifying things makes life better in a lot of ways. You know the old quote, "What we own ends up owning us". Ok. Where is the review on this bike rack?
    I need to do some research and can’t find the darn review.
    I’m heading to Alaska next summer and instead of pulling a trailer, I was thinking about carrying one bike off the front and one off the rear of my 2014 Ram Mega cab.
    The bike on the front will be a older KLR 650 (Still shopping for this one) and the one on the back will be my brothers 2006 BMW 1200 GS.
    Do you think it will work?
    We are not going to be doing any “Hard Core” off roaring with the truck, just minor stuff to get to camping sights along the way to our final destination which will be DeadHorse, Alaska.

    I know this is an old video but:
    When you have a $10,000 motorcycle at stake (not to mention how bad it could be if you launched that sucker through a family’s windshield on the freeway) a chicom fitting should have been suspected. I do think you could have saved it, ground down the welds and steel to bevel it for a good welding job with good penetration. Gussets (triangle pieces) could also be added to the pieces to add a lot of strength. I’ve considered the motohauler but still think both ends of the bike should be ratchet strapped to keep it from torquing on the center. A strap could also be beneficial in the same way a safety chain is for a trailer. I’d rather drag my bike down the freeway for a bit rather than have it take out a family of five if it bounces into oncoming traffic at a combined speed of 140mph!

    You were stressing it to its maximum and should have known from the beginning you should have reinforced and\or redone the stock welds. I don't see the point of discarding the piece instead of prepping it properly for a new weld including reinforcement.
    You are extremely lucky the bike did not fall off at high speed injuring and\or killing others.
    Zero safety redundancy.

    I always end up gravitating to the lighter more compact stuff and find I have more fun with it. Do you think just going lighter smaller bike would make things easier and bump up the fun factor? Granted theres still the aspect of having it exposed on the back end. But....👍
