Testing The Custom Shifter For The Rare Columbia Two Speed Rear

  • After driving the 1932 Ford Roadster around the block, we had a ton of comments about shifting the Columbia Rear. While driving we didn't get the car up to a high enough speed to shift, and the rear really needs to be run and shifted to get oil throughout. Matt and Steve also work on getting the hood to fit the grill and cowl better. The hood was stored off the car for many years and it has lost its shape. The hood hinge pin was also removed at some point, and was not fully installed allowing the front edge to move around. After the work to the hood, its time to run in the rear and test the shifter!!

    If the old building is still around in Detroit where it was pulled from it’d be neat to drive it around and do a photo shoot where it was found.

    Matt + Steve, your persistence is really paying off on this project! The car has evolved into a very clean looking revival that is almost show ready. Overall you have done a fantastic job! I love how the character of the car remains intact while it begins to truly function as a potential daily driver! WOW! Beautiful job you guys!

    Matt, as an old hotrodder from Spokane, you might try putting a few drops of Neets oil into that Columbia. It will really make it shift smoothly.

    Maybe a T handle finger pull for the detent in high range. Thinking like a old Corvette reverse lock out. Some Hurst shifters had them as well.

  • @randomyank7777
    @randomyank7777 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fantastic ! A simple idea for the high "detent" / lock would be a spring catch at the forward position , that can be released by a trigger under the knob , like a lift ring . Obviously something easily useable without looking , so much as feeling , to maintain eyes & attention on the road . The hood looks loads better . I look forward to that summer meet up with the car's "original" family . I'm sure they will appreciate what the "new" family has done with it , getting her "road worthy" again . Awesome job , gentlemen , all of the way around ! A very nice automobile now .

    Wow, Steve has my dream job!! Working on hot rods, using all those cool tools (old ones and new Eastwood ones), riding in them, getting paid for it, and doesn't have to buy materials and parts! As far as the Columbia linkage.......how about a spring on the linkage that would hold it tight in high?

    In watching your video, I noticed that the rod form lever to rear flexed, when changing from low to high. I say this because i think some of the action may be being lost in the shifting. I may be wrong but with the flex you could be loosing the high gear being fulling engaged.

    • @rolandtb3
      @rolandtb3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Road test to verify fit and rattles. Not covered in the video: cold weather, carburetor coolant bypass. To aid in warm-up and cold weather driving by reducing hesitancy or stalling. Any further pedal adjustment required? Will there be less flying debris for the next test drive?
      Also noticed that when shifting between high and low speeds, a burst of exhaust fumes near to the front underside. Normal or leak?

    • @leonardwalters154
      @leonardwalters154 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also noticed that it seemed like there was a lot of deflection in the shift rod,almost like it needs a bushed brace of some sort to stop the deflection

    • @mattv4690
      @mattv4690 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that also. Agree that the flex is excessive and likely preventing full engagment. Possibly could use more of a cam shape on the bell crank to positivley lock into hi/low but not without fixing the flex issue first.

  • @garyhughes9199
    @garyhughes9199 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    During the test run on the overdrive I noticed a small drip off the exhaust pipe. Other than that, she looks really good. I love me some roadsters!!

  • @JosephMurawski-dx3ei
    @JosephMurawski-dx3ei ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you change the bellcrank setup so it goes overcenter in high it would not jump out but would be easy to shift to low without added releases.

    @bobpeters6532 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Matt, your '32 roadster is looking better with each video! Kudos to you and Steve! If your overdrive shift lever had some (sprung) sideways movement, you could use a small bracket that angles to the detent notch (similar to a Harley tank shift gate) to keep it in place when you shift into high range. Just a thought.

  • @JunkMikesWorld
    @JunkMikesWorld ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really have enjoyed this series. I think if you mount a little "T" pull on the front of the shifter that pulls up on a pin you likely could solve the problem. Pull it up when you shift into high with 2 fingers. When you let go a spring will push the pin down to lock the pin into a hole.

    In garden tractor pulling the trans popping out of gear is a common issue. It is usually solved by using a simple hinged "flap"(looks like a padlock hasp) that goes in front of the shifter to restrict movement. It's simple and easy to manipulate.

    My buddy and I took a Columbia out of a 36 ford and put it on his 41 and found we had a little more room in the rear fender on the Columbia side. My 55 Ford crown vic had a cable operated two speed. I had glass pacs and could shift through six speeds with pleasing sounds.

    My first car was a 1950 Tudor deluxe with the 8BA and a Columbia 2-speed rear end. Smoothest car to drive ever. The engine was so quiet that you couldnt tell it was running if you were standing right next to it, and so well balanced that you could set a cup of coffee on the oil bath air cleaner and it wouldn't even make a ripple. Love Ford flatheads!

    Matt there is a cabinet door closer that is a detent ball that drops into a little dimpled piece and does well on cabinet doors. I know it seems kind of hokey but I have used them on varies things and yes they aren't "industrial strength" but should be fine for your application. Take a look and see if they will work.

    I went back and watched the video again after reading ( pte 1957 "s ) comment , and at 17:28 in the video when you shift from low range to high range ,that shift rod is flexing like crazy !!!! you may have to " double " the size of the " round stock "
    ( shift - rod ) to eliminate that wild flexing !! I am sure the local weld shop / steel supply would be able to fix you right up
    with a length of round stock of the larger diameter .
    also , the guys in the comments were thinking of a " T HANDLE " for a lock out detent , great idea , however , I would do " 2 " things first before fabricating that setup .
    (1) I would get the flex out of the shift rod , then try it ?
    (2) I would adjust that linkage to make 100 % sure that you have " FULL ENGAGEMENT " then try it ??
    (3) then if all else fails , make the T - handle lock out device , but one thing is for sure , that rod flexing like crazy , has to go !!!!!!
    my work is on heavy duty MACK trucks , the old trucks from the 40 's - 50's had multiple transmissions , 5 speed main / 3-4 speed auxiliary , the auxiliary trans always sat back 3-4 feet behind the main trans
    .
    OKAY, point of this is , the ( " REMOTE SHIFT RODS " ) going from the cab back to the auxiliary trans were always very
    ( ROBUST , & " HARDENED ") so after " thousands of shifts " they still retained there original shape & did not flex, so the driver
    did not miss a shift on a hill , & had to come to a stop & start over " LOADED " !!!
    give this some thought , " THEORY - OF - OPERATION " IS THE KEY TO SUCESS !!!!
    KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS , YOU GUYS ARE MAKIN IT HAPPEN !!!!!!

    Why not just make a "Gate" for the shifter that indicates what gear it is in as well as to hold the shifter in place?
