Watchfinder & Co. presents: Inside the Rolex Submariner, a demonstration of the intricacies of the Rolex calibre 3135. Watchfinder Head Watchmaker Tony Williams shows you how this famous movement is taken apart and reassembled.
A History of the Rolex Submariner:
First revealed to the public in 1953, the Rolex Submariner was a diving watch for everyone. Appealing to both professional and hobby divers, the Submariner set the standard for the category, its affordability and practicality unmatched. Rolex also developed non-chronometer versions of the Submariner that were even more affordable, costing roughly two weeks' pay at the time.
As the Submariner gained credibility, it was adopted by professional organisations such as COMEX, the deep-sea diving contractor, and the British Ministry of Defence. The civilian model also evolved, growing a date complication, and then an updated dial with white gold markers. Then, in 2010, the Submariner had its biggest change yet to become the 116610 LN, a chunkier, sportier, more high tech watch that brought Rolex into the 21st century.
The Rolex Submariner is one of the most instantly recognisable watches ever made, and continues to be one of the most popular, too.

Hello, I'm the watchmaker in this video. This nail thing is getting out of hand. No pun intended. The reason I keep them a bit longer than usual is because I use them as tools. If you take the time to look at my right hand index finger nail, it has a notch, used for filing stems to size. They also help me to select bench tools without having to look for them. Now for the important use. If mahoud has ever polished a platinum day date, or a 69173 jubilee he'll know that to ensure the grained links are grained evenly, along the flat and edge, being able to offer the link to the wheel securely requires the link to be folded over its self to achieve an even grain. Having nails facilitates this. We'll carry on being brilliant, you carry on doing what you're best at sir?

I think, most people realizes the reason for your fingernails. And people who do not realize are touchscreen phone users. Never had a chance to feel something mechanical marvel.

Wow! Much Respect! Hands of a surgeon right there! I took apart a $10 watch and got anxiety pulling the parts out! I chose to not even attempt a reassembly. I cannot imagine the confidence it takes to pull apart a Rolex. Amazing skills!
It's amazing all of those parts sitting on the table by themselves do nothing,but put them together and wind them up and mechanical magic happens.
A lot like humans. All the organs do nothing apart, but in the right configuration with a jolt of electricity, things just... work

Watches are like hearts... that's why they're sometimes called tickers.
I suggest actually watching open heart surgery videos to get an idea of how difficult and complex it is. Sewing arteries together for 12 hours straight and cauterizing valves INSIDE an actual heart is a little different than assembly a WATCH. seriously you people are nuts
Years ago, I actually considered cleaning my watch (same as in video) because the cost of professionally servicing was $700-$1500 min (needs to de done every few years or so).
After a bit of research, I decided against it. Now, after seeing this video, I can clearly see how delusional I was (lol).
It's a joy to watch someone with such skill, work. Great video. He really "nailed" it (Sorry, couldn't help myself - and no offense: I understand he uses his nails as tools).

You Should only do a service if you are Having Problems or it Broke.
Everything Else is a Waste of Money
You own a watch that would cost 700 to 1500 to have cleaned like this , and you were going to do it yourself. Hard to imagine someone that can afford a watch that expensive that actually thinks he can do that !
@@johnmarshall4442 I can afford expensive things because I dont throw away my money frivolously. I'm highly educated and quite skilled at a variety of things, so I apply my abilities to save money, which I then either invest or apply the savings to something more valuable, ie: I'm highly skilled at carpentry, so I remodeled my entire home, then applied the savings ($150k I would have paid someone to do it) to a nice boat. I've learned that if you apply yourself, you can do just about anything... except cleaning a $15k watch -lol. That I will leave to a professional.

My dad had given me his submariner he had for over 20 years. I've had it over ten years now and it works great. I only had to adjust it once in all that time. Watching what goes on inside of one is something i never saw before and that's awesome...Great upload!

Even a Tissot movement is quite complex. Sent mine out for a complete overhaul. It was shipped to a facility in California. Took a month. Watching this video, now I understand why. One warning: if you buy a Tissot automatic in Switzerland, be aware that you will likely have trouble finding parts for it in North America and the Swiss have to send it to a facility to get replacement parts. It's not a very widely used brand. From my personal perspective, I see mostly Rolex and TAG brands. Tissot is still a bit unusual that sometimes people stop and ask me where I got my watch. it's from a jewelry store called Tuerler in Zuerich.
Being a poor college student, I would usually scoff at the idea that people would spend so much money on a Rolex. This video helped me understand the precision and craftsmanship involved in making these. Thanks for making this video, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

Most/all of us have been broke and had to work our way up but I've never judged how anyone else spent their money just because I couldn't afford it at the time.

There really is no reason to sneer at people buying things I cannot yet afford, and well, now I know. :) It was probably just my jealousy and envy talking.

Having nails comes in handy when picking up small things, I imagine. It also seems handy for weeding out weirdos who are obsessed with the length of other peoples cuticles.
