I had a patient that was dying and he was from Russia. We would speak of gemstones often. Before he passed away, since he had no family, he gave me a 2.89ct oval cut Alexandrite that was his grandmother's. He was 92 at the time. I treasure the stone.
Turkish diopside is also a beautiful naturally changing gemstone.

Sometimes a nurse changes a person's life and sometimes a patient changes a nurse life. It's the beauty of life.

One of my absolute favorites! So hard to come by. I recently found a person at my local gem show who knows someone who gets Russian alexandrite straight from the source. Already got a few pieces and I’m so stoked. 🙌

“Emerald by day ruby by night” is a bit of a misnomer. Natural Alexandrite doesn’t change from pure green to pure red. Most top quality natural specimens change from a bluish green to purplish red or reddish purple. This is of course dependent on the relative chemical impurities in the stone such as chromium, tin, iron, germanium, gallium, and magnesium.

Wow, I didn't know that Pleochroism and Color Change were entirely different optical properties. I thought they were both the same, but thank you for teaching that, Natalie. I miss my friend, Jason. He moved away and Alexandrite is pretty much like his most favorite mineral.

"Nebraska Jones" has a nice ring to it. You could make that work.

The crystal habit of that 92ct. mineral specimen is fantastic. Very nice color too; now i'm wondering the locality. East Africa? Seems like a lot of nice deep blue stones originate from there.

My mother’s engagement ring was Alexanderite. It really does change from indoors to outside, the best. It is now my daughters ring but at $86,000 in the 1970’s, I can’t help wondering if I should have given it to her later, much later, so I could feel great wearing it, at least for a few more years. That’s just being selfish. She loves wearing jewels too. Both of us are Lapidary Club members. Faceting Aussie Rubies today. Cheers.

I love your videos and think the pop culture comparisons to the real world are really unique, so I found something that ain’t think is right up your alley on that! I saw you had Sailor Moon, so I wondered if you could do Houseki no Kuni! I just think is perfect for your kind of videos! BTW love every single video of yours they really inspire me to learn more about gemology!
