    We hope you enjoy our color change episode! Did you love the candy colors of garnet or prefer the earthy tones of diaspore? Tell us your favorite!

    • @hybridgoth
      @hybridgoth 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As much as I personally love a good diaspore in general, and, in particular the purple/blue-green/pink colour change diaspores, I just can't go past the vivid blue change garnets from Bekily, Madagascar.
      Having said that, my favourite from the video would have to be that sizeable alexandrite in matrix specimen with the cyclic twinning, quite a nice display piece indeed.

    I have a Russian Alexandeite from a patient I had in the 1980's. He was in his 90's and had no family. We bonded over gemstones and before he passed away, he gave me his 1.89ct oval Russian Alexandrite. I still have not had it set. I also love Turkish Diaspore. I have a few and my big one( 6.7cts) changes from green in the sun to raspberry champagne in candlelight. It is stunning. I also own color changing garnet, sapphire, and zircon. All are beautiful.

    I used to collect color change gems. I have zandrites, color change cubic zirconias, alexandrites, a fluorite and garnet. My favorite is alexandrite because it glows red under uv light. The most dramatic color change is the Blue purple zandrite.

    The ‘pleochroism’ vs ‘color change/shift’ heads up was much appreciated! Dang, it’s crazy how much I learn with you guys ❤️

    Ahh! Finally I know what the stone is! My mother has a ring with a very clear big stone that changes colour from blue under fluorescent light to purple under incandescent. She told me her mother bought it off of a street vendor years ago in China. So it's a colour change fluorite. It doesn't worth much but still pretty.

    I love my color change gems! I don't have any Alexandrite yet, but I do have several blue to red color change garnet and a large turkish diaspore. I have one green to red garnet wirh a strong color change. Loved the video.

    My mother inherited my greatgrandmothers Alexandrite and I was in line to inherit next. She just happend to not be wearing it the day someone broke into our home and stole it with many other things . Fortunately I have a picture of her wearing it. It was a very large round brilliant cut. My great grandmother while weaing it i recall seeing it a very deep blue more than green shade . It would sometimes become very bright violet . It was usually violet on my mother . Beautiful !

    @spagooter9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    These are awesome. What a coincidence too, I just got my alexandrite ring today and was admiring it so much and now this video pops up! I could only see it get to a lighter blue with the naked eye which was so hard to capture on camera, as it'd look more purple on my phone no matter what I did. Lovely shots on the vid, I wish I could see those other stones in person ❤❤

    You forgot iolite/dichroite/ cordieorite. I have some peices with blue,red,yellow and pink all in one stone and some have asterisism/ cats eye. I can ship you some of it if you would like.

    • @gems
      @gems  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We didn't forget it! Iolite has eye visible pleochroism. It shows different colors based on the vibration direction of the light passing through it. That's a different property than color change. But we did do a whole video on Iolite: th-cam.com/video/MAuRzeoOjwk/w-d-xo.html

    I got lucky enough to get two alexandrites from Madagascar! Not quite as intense as the Russian ones but still very cool! Mine are more of a soft blue green to a purple with a hint of very very very light red and the other more of a blueish purple. Not quite the famous green to red but still two of my favorites, especially since I can say I have untreated alexandrites in my collection!

    I inherited a beautiful vintage ring with a large color changing stone from my godmother. A friend thinks it could be an “older Alexandrite”, but I honestly have no idea. It’s very similar in color & size to the stone at 6:03, & changes from a purple/red when worn inside, to a gorgeous blue/green in sunlight.
    I would love to find out what it is before I have the setting fixed or rebuilt. I don’t know where to start. Do you have any suggestions for me?

    What is the durability/hardness of Zandrite? With the similarities you listed between diaspora & conundrum, there is a big difference in hardness.

      Obsidian, moldavite and Libyan Desert glass are all naturally-occurring gem glasses. Whether man-made substances can be gems is another argument.
