When I was younger, I had an older patient that was Russian. We always spoke of gemstones. Before he passed away, he gave me a 2ct oval cut Alexandrite because he had no family to pass it to. It is beautiful.

My daughter recently gave me a ring with Alexanderite with diamonds on either side. I had never heard of this gem before so I did a little digging. Aside from the facts that you brought up is the fact that you can mine large stones of Alexanderite only a very small portion of the stone will be gem quality. So half a carat is a large gem. The ring that my daughter gave me is slightly under half of a carat, it is emerald green and a very strong aquamarine in the day and at night it goes to a ruby red and blood red.
I have several rings with a variety of semi precious and precious gems in them, but this ring has become one of my favorite ring.
I have been waiting, since I’ve gotten the ring , for you to do a show on this gem so imagine my surprise and delight when this episode came out.
Thank you for this fantastic story and the approach you gave to this subject.

I had an Alexandrite ring bought for me from my grandpa that got stolen. It has been one thing in my life I wish like hell I could have back. Not so much for the stone in it which was beautiful, but because my grandpa was a true gem of a man as well who was much loved had bought it for me. At least I have the memory though.

Alexandrite deposits were first discovered in 1830 in Russia's Ural Mountains. Those first alexandrites were of very fine quality and displayed vivid hues and dramatic color change. The gem was named after the young Alexander II, heir apparent to the throne.
That is the preliminary reason of adopting the Name MY DEAR

Alexandrite was garnering outrageous prices at this year’s Tucson gem shows. The Indian material is the most affordable and there are lab created alexandrites that are good for a gemologist that is just starting out. Although synthetic gemstones are created in a lab, they have the same optical and physical properties as their mined counterparts. Look for these on direct sale sites around the web. And be sure to check out some of our other videos on Alexandrite: th-cam.com/video/wfJZmYXdBSM/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/sp437ZnKCj4/w-d-xo.html

@@rachelmurphy7664 i managed to get the info from another channel, its due to CMOS (if i remember correctly) in camera. It cant pick up a certain colour or shift due to this being in all cameras. I think maybe poloroids or an old styled camera may work however. Im going to test it out, if youd like o can update you if it works or not! My camera picks up the lightblue/slightly turquoise and dark blackish blue hues all the way up to a vibrant pink/almost red.
But its main colour, almost an emerald green just cant be picked up! 😢

Not one singular mention of the name of this mineral???
Chrysoberyl has absolutely FASCINATING properties far beyond its potential to have a color shift that makes it "Alexandrite"
All Chrysoberyl displays pleochroism through polarized light when rotated on a 45° axis, not just when Chromium is present to have an affect in different lighting.
Chrysoberyl has an extrememly rare and beauiful cyclic twinning habit that produces a snowflake-like "trilling" of three pairs of V twins; 6 FULL TERMINATIONS!
Chrysoberyl can display the very Chatoyancy you mention as an optical property better and more iconically than any other mineral and often has a VIBRANT cyan flash across gemmier stones.
It has a composition of Beryllium, Aluminum and Oxygen and when Chromium and Iron are present it can produce the beautiful gem called Alexandrite.
The coolest part about this is that it can display ALL of these characteristics in a singular specimen of Alexandrite.
Alexandrite was discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia but that has since become a very scarce source with very strict exporting policies. It is very famously found in great quantities in Zimbabwe these days with specimens from brazil typically displaying higher lustre and translucency.
Very disappointed with the lack of preparation and research put into this video. A little bit of effort would have made this dramatically more entertaining and informative.

I’m sure that’s exactly how it happened because that’s how I discovered it lol I’ve heard of it but never really looked into them so I’m shopping online for a ring during covid 19 for a Amethyst ring and I come across a Art Deco coffin cut Amethyst ring and I freak out cause I love coffin shaped anything so I purchase it for $150 and it comes in the mail 2 weeks later and I open my package and pull out a greenish blue topaz looking ring and I was furious thinking she sent me the wrong ring so I go in my house and ring still in hand and grab my phone to take a picture of it and email her that I didn’t buy this ring and I open my hand and it’s a light purpleish colour and deep purple in my camera and I just stood there dumbfounded for a min and then it dawned on me it was colour changing and best describes alexandrite and I get stopped everywhere by gem enthusiasts daily and had offers to buy it but it’s mine forever

finding natural alexandrite is almost impossible! they are all lab created even the lab created are few hundred and yeah I maybe a snob but im not gonna shell out hundred for a man-made gem thats mass produced. and I've notice that lab gems are getting pricey cuz of demand and its to me its not worth it. so when you find natural gems no matter the quality keep it cuz natural becoming more and more expensive. if lab is increasing I price then natural is too. I feel like soon natural will be just way to much to own so I love it my natural stones...something made by the earth! can't beat that! I'm lucky to have found a seller who had natural alexandrite. its tiny! but its beautiful. its for my new June baby arriving.
