Every time I play this, I feel goosebumps. I'm honoured to owe my name to this song and this oh so talented artist. Never have I seen anyone sing with this much visible emotion
No one on this planet could sing or write a song like Brel. He put every fibre of his being into each performance -- as if his life depended on it. Il est mon heros.
Hello - I love Jacques Brel. I advice you Peter Hammill - he is too a incredible poet and singer. (For example, he sings in the songs "A House With No Door" of Van Der Graaf Generator, "Still Life" of Van Der Graaf Generator, "Forsaken Garden" of Peter Hammill, "Refugees" of Van Der Graaf Generator, "Betrayed" of Peter Hammill) Have a nice day
Living in Belgium, I have no feeling of national coherence whatsoever. But this song brings me tears, and gives me a sense of unity. It brings me a feeling of nostalgia of a time I wasn't even alive.
Living in Zeeland, the Netherlands does also not give me the feeling of being dutch. I feel more close to the places around me, Zeeland en Vlaanderen (Zeeuws en Belgisch). Ik heb niks met Holland. Jacques Brell was also before my time, my parents did not play his music. I am glad I got to know him together with other great singers from that time.
I am Argentinian of French and Belgian descent. These songs remind me of my beloved grandparents. They used to play LP records in their living room and at family gatherings. I miss them so much.
C'est vrai, je suis Polonaise, mais j'adore chansons de monsier Jacques. Je parles francais en pue. Sorry for my bad french, but tomorrow i will go to Belgium to work.

At 67 yrs, today this song popped into my head for no reason. I recall hearing it as a child (on the radio). Haven't heard it for almost 5 decades. Decided to try looking it up and here I am. Had no clue it was in Flemish. And then of course I had to look up the lyrics. An empassioned love song. I am a bit freaked out about the sudden memory of this tune from long ago though. Eerie. 🥺
Many of Brel's songs I could sing in English. Although I didn't know French, Brel's enunciation of this song, both the French and Flemish, I readily learned by ear. Over cold winter in the mid-70's on my first visit to Paris, my friend convinced me to sing at his local bistro on the Left Bank. I sang in English but didn't garner much attention, not even the Brel songs. I then launched into "Marieke" just as Brel sings it here, without looking up. I figured I was probably mangling the French. I'm a powerful singer-not quite the energy Brel has here-but the verve in this song just builds to that wonderful crescendo at the end. When I finished, for a just moment you could have heard a pin drop. Then came a tremendous applause. But of course, they wanted more French songs but I'd none to give. Sigh...
Ken B, That's a wonderful story. I enjoyed reading it-as you have a lovely way of relaying your experience in words. I too did quite a lot of singing (not professionally) back in the 70's. Good times and fond memories. Thanks for sharing yours.

I've never been to Bruges or Gand and I can't understand half the words (the ones in Flemish) but none of that matters because this is the greatest love song I've ever heard. Brel was an amazing talent!
You should put it on your bucket list, Bruges is the most amazing place because of his midievel authentic style, Ghent is also a very nice place to visit , Brussels and Antwerp should also be on the list.
Of course he spoke both languages fluently as many people from Brussels did in his time. French/Flemish...who cares. His heart gushes out with such passion it captivates one.

He is worldly famous and missed everywhere on this planet
Recognized as one of the greatest of the 20th Century. Even the English review of his songs, "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" continues to be performed. I'm glad you've discovered him.

Een prachtig gevoelige zanger. 👍❤️👋

I love life but despite saying tragedy is glorious I love glory and for as long as I live I will desire greater magnitudes!!@!
Que cancion bella!
Eins meiner Lieblingslieder. Auch in der Version von Klaus Hoffmann.
De Brujas a Gante, he estado en ambos sitios tras la huella de Jaques Brel
Barbra Streisand claimed Brel as a Major influence on her singing . I can see it clearly with his high drama and explosive endings ...
❤❤ TRE' BELLE
Ich liebe dieses Lied
Le plus grand chanteur que la. Belgique ait jamais connu 🎊❤🎉
Una delle più belle canzoni di Brel
Oui très belle chanson
This is the most west European song I have ever heard.
A bloody marvel !
Grand Pays la Belgique 👍❤️
@Stijn Straetmans, he is from the province of West-Vlaanderen and from Brussels.
Jacques makes me proud to be a belgian citizen.
I love him what an artist!
Oh, oh, oh ....
Dank U/ Merci beaucoup!!!
Een Nederlandse Fan.
Met Vlaamse taal zo te zien
One of my favorites
le pourquoi du prénom de ma fille!
