    I love everything locs!! I love how people are embracing their natural hair. My son has been loc'd for 10 years and still going strong. I am on my second set because I wanted to go smaller and have now been loc'd for 5 years and I love my imperfect but perfect for me locs. I have friends and several other family members who are loc'd and when I tell you everyones locs are different and unique and just so beautiful. I don't ever see locs not being a thing or going out of style.

    I actually cut mine in March of this year, but had them since Nov 2010 shortly after leaving the military. I cut mine because was just simply over the look. They were long, beautiful and also killing my neck. Beautiful as they were, still they became uncomfortable and I noticed the tension from having heavy locs will make your hair thin in certain areas. I loved my loc journey ❤ Now it’s time for something new! Good luck to you on your journey.

    I cut my locs after growing them for 7 years. There were many reasons why, but my main reason was because as tall built black man, people treated me like I was a threat. Another big reason is dreads /locs rip out your hair over time causing tension alopecia. Also everyone has them so they don’t feel unique any longer

    • @sockfreak2003
      @sockfreak2003 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To combat the alopecia just trim them, separate the locs into thinner strands or have them in a protective style instead of a free dangling dread style.

    It’s crazy because my locs just made 7 years in June 2024. When I started mines back in 2017 that was around the time that many dudes started cutting off the high top hair style with fades and going for waves. Then when people caught on to locs about 2-3 years ago and I seen most people just wearing it as a trend. Now the trend is starting to die down and it’s interesting to watch how people in general follow the next popular thing and watch it all die down and repeat again

    I think its the lack of experienced locticians. They are coloring peoples hair too early and people retwist too often. Retwisting and getting haircuts add up in price too! On top of breakage if they are not maintained properly. I combed mine out because I got tired of bad stylists.

    Locs are apart of “CULTURE” in Florida. Wicks go back into Seminole culture, Seminole culture goes back into Native American culture, that culture goes back into Amerindian and Mesoamerican cultures. It’s only going out of style with people who aren’t from southern cultures IF IT IS going out of style. I hated seeing people make a wave out of it anyway. Afro locs, wicks and other forms of locs is really part of how a lot of spiritualities in Florida meaning it’s “apart of them”. It’s not just fashion. It’s self expression. That’s why folks don’t care what people say about their hair in Florida or other southern states who have the same culture. Seminole John Horse was sketched with wicks, 100 years before him at the battle of fort Moses some of the blacks or Seminoles at that fort were shown with locs, 100 years before them the Spanish and English wrote that some of the blacks down here had “hair like snakes”.
    We did not get our culture from no “bob Marley” or Caribs.

      @PNOTYForever 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@smelly1060 Yes Caribs because people think Caribs influenced Americans in Florida to grow locs. Only specific Caribs practice loc culture. It’s not even for all Caribs. Especially those who are mostly west African or euro African descendant. Caribs like Haitians did not have a culture of loc’n hair, which is comical because people call’d wicks Kodak dreads for a short time until people corrected them. Kodak lives in our culture. In fact Haitian elders HATE seeing them loc their hair just like a lot of Africans hate seeing their kids loc their hair when they’re assimilating into American culture. While the Rasta movement got popular in the 1940-60’s it was a time where even the Jamaican Americans didn’t even like locs. It’s pure comedy seeing all these videos of Haitian and African parents cheering on TikTok when their kids cut their locs or wicks but people were saying we got it from them.

    I want natural healthy locs so I’m not into super extreme styles. My loc journey has been low maintenance compared to when I was a loose natural.

    I personally think alot of folks got them because they were trendy and popping on social media. Especially for a lot of folks coming out of the pandemic, our hair had grown to a certain length, and the only options were to cut it, braid it, or loc it up.
    But I mostly think people wanted to fit in with the loc movement. Unfortunately some people are followers, so if they see alot of people doing something, they want to do the same, which is also why so many people sre cutting theirs around the same time.
    Soon there will be another hair "trend" and people will jump on the bandwagon for a few years just like locs these past few years, cut it, and jump on the next trend. I personally think folks are gonna move en masse to waves and low cut faded styles.
    I personally am about to rrstart my loc journey. Not because I see everyone else cutting them, but because i've had hightop locs for 6 years and am ready for a full head.

It was just expensive to maintain them back then. I just started locs in early 2024. I am for them and don't see them ever going out of style. I have had every hair style. Not big on heat. Ive had locs for about a year and a half. I usually keep 360 waves, but I would grow my hair out every now and then. I go back and forth about cutting them off, but i do like them. During that first year it was a pain trying not to get my hair wet or washing it too much to avoid unraveling. Now its not so bad given i can wash more often. I keep my styles up for a couple of months so maintaing hasn't been much of an issue.

      I agree that's the most difficult part is not being able to wash them as often as you like. Also pulling them up. Once that first year passes, you are good.

    I loc’d when I lost my mom. 5 years later I cut them into a bob combed them out over 7 months. I’m not sure if I’ll restart or not yet. So, for now I’ll enjoy my coils ❤

    yeah i agree but you can always combine your locs to make them thicker if you like! and as your hair mature they get thicker and healthier ! i have really curly hair so my biggest thing i have is that my end of my locs get curly but everyone is different! i love locs

    Had locs for like 7 yrs. Cut mines cause they was gonna do hair folic drug test for CDL driving and I needed to pass lol ended up not being for me anyways but now I’m growing hair back out probably not gonna loc it back up for a long time. Want to do new styles like braids, fro, curls, Bantu knots. I do know the next set will be Freeform. Never again will I cut my hair for a job though.

    I understand people are like "Oh but it's a lifestyle." No it isn't. Its just a way yo where your hair that has a deep confidence meter baked into it. With this hair type you will find out just how much you can take before returning to something you think you can "control". Locs (nothing to dread about em) have significant cultural ties as well. This hairstyle has been in our lineage since the dawn of time therefore it can never cease to exist. However, I do disapprove of people just getting the hair style (especially the instant locs) and they disposing of them off rip and then they say "Oh well i experienced a lock journey." What journey? You did that for fun, which isn't bad, but don't try and claim it like you know what struggling through bad hair feels like. [ For reference: I got my retwist done about 3 weeks ago and the first week after the retwist my hair got wet and it frizzed to the moon and back. In my 11 months of this it never looked so bad. But my next retwist is scheduled in about 2 weeks. Looking at this in the mirror is literal pain. But its my hair so ... We deal with it.]

    Yes locks are self limiting for sure… I mean what happens when they eventually hit the floor hahaha… the length and the heaviness of some locks causes a lot of downwards tension on the scalp so most Rasta’s I see nowadays have thinning hair at the front of their heads and sometimes throughout the scalp too..
    Plus all the hat wearing / head coverings adds to the mix also… I mean I couldn’t just wear my hair in one style always and I like to have a choice on whether I wish to comb my hair so locks are definitely not my choice of style whether they’re real or faux ones..
    But each to their own I’d say… If it works for you then that’s fine… just be as you are.. then and all that jazz hahah
    That’s all I got to say on this.. You’re welcome btw….
    Cheers & Ciao ;)’
