The older I get, the more I love Emily Gilmore and feel for her. She may have been difficult, but she was doing the best she knew to give her daughter the best life. She's also so beautiful, refined, and witty.
Which also why she has such a strong headed daughter. I feel she gets very little credit as a character to have raised Lorelai and somehow shaped her as well
Yeah but I'm not sure about giving her daughter the best life. Emily Gilmore has always lived the big life, in the big mansion surrounded by maids and a chauffeur while Lorelai and Rory lived in a small house, and Lorelai is working a normal job. With all the money she has, at least buy your daughter a big house or give her and your granddaughter a trust fund so they no longer have to work for a living. Somehow, the Gilmore story doesn't make sense.
I’m sure she made the offer many times, but Lorelai being Lorelai would of course say no. She always made a big deal about not accepting any money for free from her parents. Lorelai is a hard and honest worker because she wants to be and she likes her little house.
She was straight up emotionally abusive, but alright
@@princ8812 Emily wasn't at all stingy. Lorelai didn't even want Emily getting Rory extra uniform stuff for school. Emily didn't kick Lorelai out--she chose to leave and shut her parents out because she was stubborn and proud af. As much as it is admirable that Lorelai was able to make a life for herself and Rory--she never HAD to do it without help. She chose to. It hurt Emily a lot to see that Rory had chosen to live in a tiny house over her own home that was available to her and Rory. It's just that Lorelai didn't want her mother to be able to ask for her to conform in any way to her standards. There's no reason a parent should spoil a child by buying them a house when they've offered to pay for top education so that they can support themselves. That's not helping anyone to be the best version of themselves.
When she said "trollop", I remembered that lipstick from Gilmore Girls :)

Her character in the GG Revival certainly had the most growth and depth. She was gorgeous as a young woman and still is.
Emily's growth and development saved the revival I think. The rest was a disaster .

She's so gorgeous even at 73. Absolute stunner when she was younger, but aging did not take much of a toll on her. It's just like she's the exact same but with a few extra wrinkles. Does an EXCELLENT job as Emily and nails every scene, too. She can be super hatable, super lovable, and absolutely HILARIOUS with the driest wit. Whatever the script calls for, she takes to the next level.
She was so underrated/under recognized by the industry in this role. AMAZING!

She talks about how she made Emily as awful as possible. In reality she created a character with an array of emotions. The mother that longs for a relationship with her daughter. The wife that stands by her husband. The glue that put her family back together, against all odds. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful characters ever created.

Emily and Richard were the most interesting characters of Gilmore Girls, without them it would not be so successful as it was , as many of you I love the entire story and the bond between Lorelai and Rori but those two Emily and Richard absolutely stunning

Me too! It was only on very rare occasions that I wouldn't like Emily. Most of the time it was Lorelei I didn't like...
same they were unapologetically themselves. they were mean women who knew they were mean. rory and lorelei were mean women who thought they were oh so nice, i hate these two more and more every time i rewatch the show.

Am I the only one that thinks that Emily really wasn’t that mean - sure she had her moments but God, Lorelai was SO unnecessarily touchy with her.
As the series went on, you really started to sympathize with her. Did you like her character arc in the new season?
They definitely made her a bit unstable but it’s understandable as Richard passing away threw her life upside down.. I liked that Lorelai matured quite a bit as well...

She was mean. Lorelei was touchy with her because she grew up with her mom constantly insulting her and telling her she was never good enough. She is a bully parent. We saw that with how she treated Rory when Rory lived with her. She was awful

It's funny that she modeled Emily Gilmore after her grandmother because my grandmother on my mother's side was A LOT like Emily. Very proper, very exacting, and could be quite severe, but had a soft heart under a hard shell.
Even the lady who played her mother-in-law (Trixie) was amazing.

I really love this woman. I am currently rewatching Gilmore Girls now that I'm in my 40's and I just love and appreciate how she portrayed the role of Emily. Emily is the best part of the show. She plays Emily as tough and impossible as can be, yet so loveable and vulnerable. I never really noticed that when I watched the show when I was in my 20's. She is a multi dimensional actress. Capable of a lot of things. On top of that she is incredibly beautiful, humble and authentic. Love her!

I love Emily. Kelly does a wonderful job with her. I always just see Emily’s reasons for everything (while seeing Lorelei’s side, too.) and Emily does have a very big heart under all of that facade. My favourite character. ❤️

It looks like they used some sort of awful white filter in the revival. It made everyone look way older, especially Lorelei and Luke. They looked far better in the few natural lighting scenes.
I think she had sth done with her eyes. They area lot less droopy. Looks great tho

Kelly Bishop was a great and pleasure to watch on Dirty Dancing. I love her Emily Gilmore. She was amazing as both.
Love her ! Classy, witty, comfortable in her skin, candid, beautiful & talented. What’s not to love ? My dear late Mom had The A Chorus Line album in the 70s when I was a teen. Later , as a single Mom, I watched GG with my daughter ( now grown). Mom would have adored that smart, charming, cutting edge, heartfelt show, but she passed just before it debuted. I’ll add that Emily & Richard are like the characters in the Plays of Buffalo Native, A.R. Gurney. I was born & raised in Buffalo & Mom & Dad loved his plays about a certain era of “Buffalo Society”. Like Emily, the characters weren’t stuffy at all; they multi dimensional & vulnerable. One example of an A.R. Gurney play is Love Letters, which not long ago enjoyed a National Tour starring the iconic Ali MacGraw & Ryan O’Neil.
She is an amazing actress.

I adore Kelly Bishop!! She is so talented and she made Emily Gilmore, so real, perfect for the background I imagine her to have. I also love that she isn’t obnoxious in real life. She is someone I absolutely WANT at my dinner table. I’m sure we would be friends if proximity were possible.

I think the line they’re talking about in minute 13 is when Richard Gilmore was in the hospital and Emily was doing calls and making plans and she had to explain to Laurelai why she was doing all that she was doing
I think I love Emily the most among all the three gilmore girls! Her character stayed truthful to her ethics and values. And she did made so many changes just to get the girls back in her life. She always tried to do what is best for her family, even if she was little tough. Yes she is not easy to talk with, you might not call her when you are sad, but she is the person you will call when you'll need to fix something. I like how lorelai's relationship changes with her gradually. even she will always ate her parents, there were a lot of times when emily felt lonely and misunderstood when lorelai gave her love and support. Emily had major fight with richard after he went against lorelai's relationship with Jason and destroyed him. No one knew what actually happened. But I know Emily stuck to her values and her love for her daughter. Even when she had to seperate with richard.
I came here for Gilmore Girls and I was like “COME ON ALREADY” three minutes in. But wow....Emily was modeled after her grandma. Go figure. 😂

I didn't remember she played Baby's mom. Then I watched Dirty Dancing again I realized where I knew Emily from
I grew up watching dirty dancing once a week since I was born because my mother was in love with Patrick Swayze, I knew the end dance by the time I was 4. And the sound track really did tie the movie all together, and made me love music. I would say it is one of the best sound tracks of all time. The movie is truly something magical yet so simple that you can’t help but love it
She reminds me of Susan Sarandon for some reason. Nice lady and good actress.

Emily was definitely someone who you can tell was struggling inside and her actions explained that. She definitely has always been strong-minded, but she still likely felt a bit insecure and vulnerable as they discussed in the video. :)

I used to hate Emily and Richard but honestly they were raising their daughter to their lifestyle and they did their best. I love them.
In the middle of this video, I had to stop and listen to her sing in the OCR of A Chorus Line. She's just so talented. I love her.
This ol' gal has been around a loooooooooooooooooooong time. I mean... one of her first roles was in the original Hawaii 5-0 tv series... which was on when I was kid... in the 1970's. And when I scrolled through her IMBD history I was surprised at how many shows and movies she'd been in that I had seen over the decades... but she never really stood out. I never noticed her or remembered her until she played Emily in the Gilmore Girls.
emily is one of my favorite characters, kelly bishop played her so well that for years i could not understand that the actress playing emily was not actually emily hahaha
My favorite Emily/Lorelai dialogue:

That's when I fell in love with Emily.

The real problem with Emily & Lorelai was that they were exactly alike. Both were stubborn control freaks who needed things their way. I always thought Lorelai was an ungrateful brat because despite Emily's shortcomings, she did not force her daughter to get married & was going to let her continue towards her life goals despite having a baby at 16. It seemed no matter what her parents did Lorelai just wanted what she wanted despite who got hurt. And she was that way with Max & Luke and everyone else she used along the way. And Emily may not have spoken as fast as Lorelai but Emily was a sarcastic whip. She was incredibly quick & funny. To me she was the true star of that show.
I think is crazy how people think the actors are the same as their characters and they are just playing someone, it's their job to be another person for our entertainment, sometimes they have to play someone completely different and that what can define them as good actors.

Emily Gilmore was the textbook example of an emotionally abusive parent. Lorelei put up with that abuse for 16 years, which is why she created such strong walls of protection.

@@soukscriedhere I think it's because Kelly Bishop is such a charismatic actress. Also the show is told from Lorelai's point of view. Lorelai is a decent person, so that's why Emily doesn't seem so bad either.
