RV CRACKED GEL COAT-ON THE FRONT CAP: How to fix it 👍

  • Today,I’m going to be fixing a couple of growing cracks in the gel coat on the front cap of our RV without using your typical fiberglass kits that use resins and epoxy.
    If I was to ask 10 people how they’d go about fixing this problem, I would get 10 different answers. But today I’m going to address this problem my way. My coach my rules right. 😜 It’s hot today-about 90º here in RGV-and those are the perfect conditions I’ve been waiting for to tackle this repair.
    BACK GROUND:
    We were getting ready to leave RGV, I got up on the roof to clean and polish my front cap and that’s when I noticed that the bottom hairline crack that has been there for years has now barely grown some. But now I have another hairline crack growing upwards. Both of these cracks are below and above the far right running light. Now you understand why I take care of my coach myself. If I had some one else washing and polishing my coach, doing roof repairs and so forth, they wouldn’t of even see these cracks and even if they did more than likely they wouldn’t even of said anything. This is why I’m a hands on guy. I’m always looking for stuff like this when I’m working in any area doing anything.
    I decided to NOT use your normal fiberglass repair kit where you use fiberglass strips, resin or epoxies because those materials dry to hard and open up additional steps like sanding and painting and stuff like that. Since this is so small, I want to catch it now and avoid that type of extensive fix later. Besides, I just don’t believe that approach is necessary here. These are hairline cracks in the gel coat. Even fiberglass repair kits by JB Weld and others are not the way to go here either. They dry to hard. This motorhome front cap area rolls from side to side, and the cap itself does twist some while underway, so this fix needs to be somewhat flexible, resistant to UV and bond so it won't leak.
    The bonding material I used is in my Amazon Store in the "Everything On The Roof" category.
    • It does expand a little when drying
    • Permanent bonding - above and below the waterline
    • Fastcure version of 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200
    • Tackfree in 12 hours and typically cures within 48 hours
    • Tough and flexible polyurethane polymer forms strong bonds
    • Capable of retaining strong bonds during vibration, swelling, shrinking or shock. Stays flexible too - allows for structural movement
    • Has excellent resistance to weathering and salt water.
    • Won't sag or flow in vertical or horizontal seams
    • Use when surface is warm
    • You can paint over it
    • Bonds to fiberglass
    So go get your Rv "MARTINIZED". “You guys can do this stuff”.

    I knew how I wanted to approach this fix, but honestly I didn’t know exactly what to expect as far as the thickness I’d have to go down and I certainly wasn’t expecting dual layers up on the cap. I was so glad to see that it was in fact two layers and I was able to address just the layer that had the crack. It is now 5 months later and my fix is holding strong and no more cracking. SUCCESS! 👏
    BTW...3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant now comes in white, black, tan and mahogany. It is not paintable. The 3M White 5200 version I used is called Fast Cure 5200. The black version is not fast cure. It takes longer to cure. I'm not sure of the cure times of the other two colors because I've never used them. Once you open a tube of this Fast Cure material you need to use it quickly.
    ON ANOTHER NOTE…if your RV has very tiny hairline cracks it’s called crazing, paint checking or sometimes called spider cracks. It’s merely a cosmetic issue. It usually does not compromise the integrity of the RV. You’ll usually see this condition in older RV’s and usually appears in the darker colors but can also happen in light colors too.
    The Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Acrylic Black Polish that I carry in my Amazon Store in the-Compound, Polish, Finish Coat-category, works to fill in these cracks and will make many RV’s look much better. It lasts for about 6 months or so and makes these small cracks nearly invisible.

    I’m thinking you could use the same vinyl decals to camouflage repairs in other more noticeable areas on the RV too. A+, I have a Polaris Ranger with some cracked plastics, I drilled the holes to prevent the cracks from getting larger. Diamond plate with 3M or Gorilla double sided tape is great to hide boogers and damage on the RV as well, like in the back for instance if you jack knife while towing. I’ve seen that done.

      On the drawer slides...I'm sorry but I don't remember where I got those. That was more than 5yrs. ago and I didn't have a YT channel then. Just search for *heavy duty metal drawer slides* and get the length and rated weight you'll need. They'll need to be beefy so the drawers don't sag when you pull them out.
      Edit: You will not find them at your typical box stores so don't waste your time there. These kind of slides will be found online in *specialty cabinet or industrial cabinet* suppliers.

      @@TheDopalgangr Yes this method is correct. You can also place a small, thin piece of wood under the lens and pry against that instead of the cap to pop off of the lens. Just a little added protection so you're not prying against the cap itself.

    I have some cracks on the fiberglass roof on the sides. Not too bad. Will the 3M adhesive do the job? Or, should I use a fiberglass resin? 3M sure looks easier.

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would not use the 3M 5200 on small cracks on the fiberglass. I'd have to see your situation to properly advise. But usually real small cracks are best known as "spider cracks" or "spider cracking". It's mainly cosmetic. But again, without seeing it I could be wrong in what you actually have. Research RV spider cracks. In a nut shell, spider cracking is common on many older RV's bc of bad manufactured fiberglass sheets.

    Looking at a 2005 Intruder 375W and noticed on this RV there are several gel coat stress cracks from the roof line downwards. Some are 18” in length and I would say I noticed 20 of them. Some around windows. I am wondering if this is a walk away from purchasing this unit situation?

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, IMO....maybe, maybe not. If there's no signs of water intrusion, the price is right and and you're a good DIYer then maybe. Would I buy it....probably not. To many other choices that don't have problems like this.
