Thank you for sharing this. As an artist nowadays it feels like being in social media is a requirement to have a career, or is at the very least related to success for artists. I hope there are still ways to grow a career without the need to fit into social media molds

It’s doable but yeah unfortunately having a social media presence is kind of needed nowadays.

Hi Bobby. Thank you for saying OUT LOUD that we need to be kinder to each other. Hugs from a grateful ghost in B.C.

Bobby, this is very thoughtful and nuanced take and I would feel proud to share this with younger artists. For students who are older and can grasp tougher concepts I would use Raygun's example to talk about the cultural origin, history, and struggles of the dance; the way hip hop culture was founded, how it was treated, and exploited, etc. I did feel her dance was not top level, and it felt a little disrespectful towards the culture but I'm not a Bboy, and I would not put my energy into making fun of her using meme's or mean comments. We need more positivity and I think hip hop elder Bobbito Garcia had some really encouraging words about the art of breaking moving forward. But, the point about fame? Right on-totally agree.

I always like the way you don't really take sides, very diplomatic, it actually helps the "discussion" move forward, also your honesty is a breath of fresh air, aknowledging your own faults or shortcomings or humanlike reactions. Thank you for sharing.

If you look for the darkness, you will find it. So we have to look for the light. Sometimes that is difficult as one mean comment can nullify fifty excellent ones. I felt bad for Ray.Then I saw the memes and comments and once again, the trolls were out in force. I did want to tell you this. You are famous to me! I had a bone marrow transplant four years ago and you warrior characters kept my spirits up while I battled blood cancer. The first time I saw your work, I was smitten. You made a difference in my life. Helped me through a tough time. Just that alone, in my eyes, is what success is.

Raygun probably didn't envisioned this for herself and I can't imagine how she feels... Now if we translate this "fame" and "success" to artists, it is a very hard duality to navigate: it is the best time to be an artist with so many channels to put yourself out there (vs the 90's or 80's) but it is so much and overwhelming. If you want to live from your art from a global market, what options do you have other than "playing the game"? -- How much is too much? What trends should you jump or ignore, etc...
Great discussion topics as usual-- thank you for sharing!

First of all thanks again Bobby, this kind of talks are always becoming more needed in a hyperfocused social media society world is becoming.
I feel now days is hard to learn that social media isn't everything in life, I mean yeah its important, but being able to step away from it is also a skill to learn. Its sad for people without the tools to mange it fall into the viral and trending harrasment that social media can produce. Still expposing the problem its a great way to contribute to raise awareness about it, I guess being aware is the first tool to develop ways to manage social media in daily life.
In my personal experience, I do decided to take it easy to with social media, and don't force myself to work that hard to build and audience, and lucky enough I learned to code and have a game developer job to support financially my concept art dedicated life. But still I do recognize that is a privilege as an "in progress" to be able to have that kind of finances.
Again thanks, I can't express how much the talks, the podcasts, this videos and even your book have helped me through my art life. Literaly are game changers to me and we haven't even met in person ever, Its crazy the impact being able to access this resources can have for someone.

Hello! You really hit the nail on the head in this one!
I've been subject of hate and bullying for weeks now because a youtuber on YT who's channel is all about hating on comic creators made a video about my comic and filled it with false accusations sending many people bashing on me and my work without even doing research or doing any thinking. Just blindly following the crowd. So i totally get how awful that can be. Some people be making a living out of hating on others and that's truly sad, one would expect the world to be a better place as times goes on but it's just keeps going downhill. Many youtubers are turning to making videos about controversial topics just because it gets them views nowadays. And I'm just a small creator with a few hundred followers on IG i can imagine how awful things could go with people that have big audiences. Cancel culture is real nowdays

It's funny that this video is coming up now because I was thinking a lot about this for while too.
I saw a lot of musicians, who started out for the sake of loving music but as they became more famous, their mental Health took an extreme toll on them. Escaping in Drugs, alcohol and other types of addiction as they can't handle all the attention that they're getting. THe good and the bad.
I think it was Kurt Cobain who regularly had panic attacks before goin on stage. A guitarist from my favorite band wanted to jump out the window and unalive himself to make a sign of how dangerous and hurtful fame actually could be, but their singer pulled him out of the situation really quickly. A lot of people died, because of fame. Personally I feel sorry for these type of people. Even working on a Fanart at the Moment, I asked myself "Is this the right thing? Should I talk more about said band. On one hand yes. A) because it's their livelihood and they love making what they do. And as a Fan I want to support it. They're all much older now and much more content with their status now as they were in their mid 20s, early 30s.
I think as artist howeve, we are in a special position, because we are able to hide behind our work. We, as human aren't as important as the work that we produce. Look at Banksy for example. Banksy is incredibly famous for his paintings. Yet, no one knows what he looks like and he could basically go to the local supermarket without being recognized. Tying my not back to music, this also is something that we see with a lot of Japanese Musicians who refuse to show their face publicy for that reason. (two people that come to mind are Ado and Eve).
My point is. Fame is scary. Incredibly scary. That's why I usually try to avoid showing my face online. Or which is why I usually tell people in my classes "As much as I love doing this, if you see me out in the wild, do not approach me. This is just giving me anxiety , lmao!"

It's very interesting that you didn't receive any attention when you started a fresh art account. It proves that social media is a popularity contest akin to high school. You still have your skills and work in the industry, despite receiving no attention on your incognito account. I think gaining followers is easy, draw memes or the flavor of the week topic/fandom. Being skilled enough to get industry level work? Followers don't matter.

I think that always comes on what kind of famous. I think the famous like olympic one are just short period time. I mean when the time passes, the waves would slowly go down too as people probably not interested anymore talking about it. So yea, I think those people just need to bare it till the waves go down.
