    As a 99 Noir owner I agree with a lot of this review. For me I treat it as a “fun” headphone that’s easy for my iPad or iPhone to power.
    With that said for anybody that buys it, immediately remove the larger pads it is shipped fitted with and install the smaller set. These cans sound FAR better with the small pads. The bass is still quite present but it tightens up with more definition. The mids and highs also come up noticeably as well. The highs are still recessed but the overall signature is much more cohesive with the smaller pads installed and approaches what the original 99 Classic sounded like that everyone raves about before Meze (for reasons unexplained) switched to larger pads without retuning.

      I think they switched to larger pads because their original pad supplier went out of business. However, I dont know why they didnt retune them.

    I posted a comment a while back saying I might pass on the drop if the extra pads were actually more bass than the stock ones, but I read several comments and posters saying the opposite; I haven't seen anyone claim that they sound the same as the original Classics, but I think the idea was that they get at least as close as possible with this reproduction; I have to agree with the others, I don't find the extra pads overly bassy at all. The bass is north of neutral but it doesn't drown any mid or treble frequencies and remains relatively balanced, nor do I find it muddy. Not the tightest but it does a good job. I haven't tried the larger pre-installed pads but I imagine those are the bassier ones. I really like these, I'm glad I joined the drop. And appreciate your review and impressions!

    Definitely go with smaller pads - it sounds heck of a lot better. I think with smaller pads it effectively becomes 99 classics - when I took off the larger pads, the drivers had "99 Classics" printed on them. The smaller pads tighten up the bass and bring up mid and treble to a level that is very enjoyable. I think Josh might have mixed up large and small pads in the video. The treble and mid becomes gets a boost, while the bass stays about the same but just becomes tighter.

    Hey Josh, i need some help regarding what Headphone should i buy..
    So i Saw these two headphones, *"Blue Mo-Fi"* and *"Focal Listen"* on the online shopping site in my country. They both have a similar price (it's about 270-300 in dollars i presume) which headphone do you think is the best between the two?
    Thanks Josh 😁 Amazing content as always!

    Had the original 99c, sold them after the original small pads broke, no other pads do the justice.
    Headband is great, feels like you don't wear anything, but the clamping force is quite high.

    Josh if only you could have heard the 99 Classics with the original pads.. totally different experience.

    • @FusionMusic
      @FusionMusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah in his review it seemed a bit confusing. Because from what I read the smaller pad is the "original pad" and the bigger pad is the "new edition pads". And the smaller "original pads" from what I gather from the frequency graph is that it has less mid bass, more sub bass, and more mid and treble. Effectively better than the "new edition pads" in every way.
      So I'm not sure if had it reversed when he compared the pads???? Also when he reviewed his 99 Classic I'm not sure which pad is on it at the time.

    • @wagstaff6135
      @wagstaff6135 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FusionMusic Well...I just switched to the smaller pads on the 99 noir, and... 100 times better. I think Josh probably did have them reversed. Or something else weird was going on. I was very disappointed with the pre-installed pads. Like it a whole lot with the smaller (less comfortable) pads.

    I am running a Fulla 2 and Sennheiser 58x on my laptop desk music setup (my starter audiophile set up). For my birthday, I just ordered the FiiO Q5s so I have a DAC/Amp I can take with me and to replace my Fulla 2 for at home use when I have to return it (I am borrowing it). Along with the FiiO, I got these Meze 99 Noir, and I’m pretty excited. I’ll have headphones I can take with me to use with my portable DAC/Amp and to use at home as well. What do you guys think?

  • @intoitreviews
    @intoitreviews 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not my experience with my set. The extra pads on mine, tone down the bass, and tone up the trebble a bit... both pads lose the forwardness in the middle of the midrange, but it's more noticeable on the stock pads; with the smaller/thinner pads being more even in presentation. Nevertheless the flare in the midrange is recessed at times, no matter what, which is relaxing, but also throws off your expectations. They did require significant burn in to even out as well.

    • @robstivers1994
      @robstivers1994 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotta say I mostly agree with that. What I heard with the new smaller pads is completely opposite to what Josh has described. My impression is that with the stock pads, bass is bloated, flabby and slow. Notes linger longer than they should and bleed into the lower midrange making the 99's sound a bit muddy. With the new smaller pads, the bass is decreased a bit and tightened up. Still pretty bassy, but not as slow and bloated. As a result, midrange comes forward in the mix and sounds clearer with more detail. I don't think that treble is affected much. Nothing bothered me, anyway. Maybe I'll have to go back and listen again.

    • @intoitreviews
      @intoitreviews 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robstivers1994 as a side note, I use a dac portable with a treble boost that actually fixes any treble spikes (was only on certain tracks) and unbloats the bass/brings the recessed parts of the mids more forward... it's like the perfect fix for these (with the smaller pads)!

    • @ilcampsometimes
      @ilcampsometimes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      its not gonna be night and day, good aim and game sense will beat HQ audio any day. The highs on this headphone are just faded a bit compared to the bass. You might not hear certain sounds such as footsteps and reloads as well as you could with a neutral open back headphone. Honestly most gaming headsets now a days will be good enough for competitive gaming at any level. You just have to remember that there is a satisfaction to hear better more powerful audio in any media.

    Josh, you are freaking KILLING ME man. I've said this on another of your videos. Saying "it clocks in at a sound pressure level of 103 db" is useless and makes you sound ignorant. Spl alone is just sound pressure level. **If you're trying to give us an idea of efficiency, you need to add on the "per mW" or "per V" (the two are different, and it matters)** Stating it correctly would look like: "The headphones have an efficiency of 103db spl/mW and they have an impedance of 32 ohms."

    • @JoshuaValour
      @JoshuaValour  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Everything in America for headphones is measured per mW. Check any site, audeze, senn, hifiman, meze, you name it. It is ALWAYS per mW. I don’t need to tack it on to the end every time if it’s common practice within the headphone industry. Even still it’s such a small thing to worry about, because if you REALLY need to know the specs you can read all that online already. It’s meant to be quick tacked on info.

    Hell yeah Billie Eilish.
    Kinda disappointed that they didn't include the gen 1 pads that were more linear sounding in place of the extra bass (even more bass than stock 99 Classics is pretty... impressive). Ah well, someday.

    Billie Eilish recommendation? Aw mate that is disappointing to see you do that.
