It can't be overstated how much having decent equipment can make a student musician become obsessed with their craft. When I was in high school, I was selected to be the first user of a brand new Bach Strad trumpet the school's music department bought. It was so much better than the beginner trumpet I had been using since middle school, it was insane. Because of that trumpet, I went from liking music to being obsessed with getting better at trumpet to an almost unhealthy degree.
Watching this channel back during the pandemic inspired me to pick up the drums again. Then it got me interested in headphones, I got a good pair, and heard the drums clearer in so many songs. I've played the drums nearly everyday since then. Thank you.

Yeah, that's pretty much most of their sales pitch, brand-wise... They're not famous for high fidelity audio quality, but they are famous for external design and comfort.
Yep! New pieces of equipment for a student could be what makes them obsess! I played on a plastic Accent clarinet from 5th grade until about 8th grade. I got a scholarship to Interlochen’s summer camp in 2013 and my mom had to get me a better clarinet- a Buffet E11. That place got me into jazz clarinet, and I immediately learned how to do glissando’s, and how to do the rhythm of jazz. I eventually asked my mom to get me a tenor sax so I can join Jazz Band in 2013’s school year (which is now ruined due to my apartment leaking on it and making it moldy), and I learned it so SO fast! I even learned how to play flute because of the GRP Allstate Bigband from the 90’s! Didn’t know jazz flute was a thing. I don’t play much anymore, but God do I want to play my tenor again. Now, I’m getting into music production. My first song was horrible, and the last song I made until my laptop broke (I was going through hell when I BROKE IT) and it was leagues better. I love music because my mom actually listened to my band teachers saying, “He’s actually really good. He learns so fast!”
Clarinet gang represent. I went from a Bundy to a Buffet R13, band director got it for me at cost, got to audition a lot of nice horns, I didn't think they let high school students do that. And yeah, it led me down a garden path to a season in drum corps (mello), and eventually just using the instrument I was born with and doing opera. Wow, coulda saved some money!
I can agree with this. Practicing on a cheap student guitar didn't make me feel enthusiastic as a teenager so I stopped learning. I recently decided I wanted to learn again and picked up a second hand Fender Telecaster and have been enjoying practice a lot more.
My brother took a class on something to do with music or something and they let him use a pair of reference headphones. He loved them. I feel like it would have benefitted him to let him keep them.

Since I turned around 16 I suddenly began listening to a lot more music than I used to, from almost nothing to 3-4 hours a day. Over the first proper Covid lockdown here in the U.K. I used some of my left over student loan which I’d saved up and bought myself a pair of Beyerdynamic 1990 Pros. It was the best money I’ve ever spent. They blew me away at the time and I still get surprised by their quality and n a regular basis. That year, with lockdown ruining my experience at university and generally making me miserable, those headphones really fanned the flames for my passion for music and I ended up averaging 8 hours, 30 minutes a day of listening to music on Spotify. Really changed my relationship with music and forged me some really good habits I still have now.
I bought a pair of 99 classics because you reviewed the Elite and Empyrean. They are my favourite headphones hands down, and the only upgrade i hope to make someday is to the aforementioned Empyreans. I like warm sound signatures and the fit and finish from Meze is unparalleled. I also got great support asking for bigger earpad advice. Fit, finish, and audio quality, I don't think you can beat them.

I got the Meze 99 classics because of the recommendation from here. Other than the fact that they look good, sound good, and feel good, the hard case is such a nice thing to have. It’s great being able to travel with them and use them on a plane then just shove them in my backpack when I’m done.

Your analogy about the music student obsessing over the quality of their instrument helped convinced me to make this my next headphone purchase. I was already planning to prior to watching this video, but that analogy was the icing on the cake.
I'd recommend checking out Meze's authorized dealers during a shopping holiday (such as Black Friday) as their headphones do go on sale from time to time.
for me this headphones share the spirit of pagani cars design. they embrace the beauty of raw materials and precise industrial processes which give the product a sense of timelessness and extreme build quality. i love opulent high-end stuff when done right

I like the idea of having a nice sounding headphone that feels good rather than the best sounding headphone I can get, but feels like crap to hold.
@Madao in the later half of 2022, around when the 109 was released, the 99 had a silent update which sealed the rear of the cup better. That reduced the amount of midbass bloat the 99 has on new models

Ok I am just getting into the audio world so this might be a dumb question. Is there a reason why a headphone can't have a removable back so they can be closed back when you want and open back when you want ? I am sure there is one but I am not sure what to look up. Also why aren't there many planar magnetic speakers ? I have looked and I can't find any maybe they exist, are Planar magnetic drivers to expensive to scale up into a speaker form factor.
I’m not certain but I think it’s because it would be really hard to make it sound good both ways, and that would be mostly a thing for the people that want it to sound good

I actually got a pair of these last week! And they sound and feel wonderful. Hearing the sound comparison with them felt pretty funny as I'm using the same headphones to watch this lol.
From what I remember, part of the reason Meze headphones look so nice and most of them come with travel cases is that the founder travels a lot and wanted headphones that he could travel with, were comfortable, and didn't look ugly.
you should make a video going over a bunch of your favorite songs to listen to with good headphones. Like the really wide, and really good bass, high dynamic range and such.

I was thinking of getting the same stack but went with the K7 for the time being. It should be in tomorrow. I tried to get away with using my ES100 with the 109 and I could tell it wasn't up to the task. I did get some hints of what it can do, I can't wait until it has halfway decent amplification.
@@spamcan9208 The meze's aren't too fussy with amplification but I'm sure they will definitely appreciate the better equipment.
freaking LOVE meze, always stoked to see a review by them. Their 99 Classics were a steep price-point for me, but I've had them for a year and a half and I still have this big dumb grin on my face, every time I discover new music with them. And like you say, just chuck em in a bag. Amazing.
I really love the Meze 99 classic headphones I bought because you reviewed them. Thank you for that!
I've been daily driving my 99 classics since not too long after I saw your video on them and I couldn't be happier. They feel so good and like you mentioned here gave me a reason to listen to music, made me want to re-listen to stuff just to see how it felt.
im trying to find his review about the 99 classics but cant seem to find it, do you perhaps remember the title? maybe he just deleted it for some reason
@@giuk835 Not sure if I post a link it'll work but it's on his video "My sets of Beautiful Headphones"
@@giuk835 th-cam.com/video/hEVBZ_Osr0I/w-d-xo.html
No matter what content you put out I always enjoy it, from crappy Dingus Nuggets, or top of the range Headphones.
My weekend is always complete after watching DankPods 😁💞😘
I am super happy they sent these to you. You're how I got started down this (ridiculously expensive) rabbit hole of a hobby and I've been staring at the 109s for a while now. Hearing that they have your seal of approval makes it a lot easier for me to save for these bad boys!
Every time you mention the price of a pair of Mezes I'm shocked at the low price. Definitely on the list to add to my K7XXs.
Your analogy about the music student obsessing over the quality of their instrument helped convinced me to make this my next headphone purchase. I was already planning to prior to watching this video, but that analogy was the icing on the cake.
Man, I've had my eye on these since Meze released them. They're so good looking. If only they ever went on sale
I'd recommend checking out Meze's authorized dealers during a shopping holiday (such as Black Friday) as their headphones do go on sale from time to time.
for me this headphones share the spirit of pagani cars design. they embrace the beauty of raw materials and precise industrial processes which give the product a sense of timelessness and extreme build quality. i love opulent high-end stuff when done right
one of the many things why i'm proud to be a romanian, great content keep up the good work!
You guys got vampires so that's frickin dope. But yeah nice headphones.
@@AbiRizky matter of fact i am a vampire, i live in the transilvanian part of romania
@@AbiRizky we have some things that we can be proud of, one of the safest countries, lowest gun owner rate in whole of Europe, highest home ownership rate in the world, great cuisine, beautiful latin language, music, and country, but Romania is not promoted and not many people know about us.
@BeauRivage mm i love trying to start arguments on the internet
@@cosmindvd true true very cool indeed, but yknow, vampires
Wade, i just wanna let you know that you are the one that got me into audio, a year ago i bought a pair of KZ ZSN Pro (based of a video of yours) and i love them and used them every day, thanks for all the info you provide for us noob audio guys
I was inspired by your a few months ago to get the Crusher Evos. That was a big buy at 200 freedom eagles. I was AMAZED at how good they sounded (base slider at the bottom) and it almost brought me to tears, I remember thinking about how I was hearing sounds in some of my favorite songs I'd never heard before.
man
you bought the crushers and immediatly thought they were amazing, you need to try studio reference stuff like akgs and sennheiseres
@@lilpisser124 I know, I've a friend with a like 600 dollar pair of headphones and a noise rook in his basement, I can't imagine
Thing that impressed me the most was how premium Meze stuff feels.
I am a "sound first" guy, but these were so comfy and nice I don't care that they aren't competitive sound wise.
I like the idea of having a nice sounding headphone that feels good rather than the best sounding headphone I can get, but feels like crap to hold.
Got a pair of 99 classics at the beginning of this year entirely because of this channel and they are amazing. We love meze
actually the 99 classics are pretty terrible, measurement-wise. xD
the 109 pros are okay though.
@Madao in the later half of 2022, around when the 109 was released, the 99 had a silent update which sealed the rear of the cup better. That reduced the amount of midbass bloat the 99 has on new models
got a pair around 2 years ago, had to replace the pads twice, but damn I love the sound of these things
@@MyouKyuubi idk what you mean by measurement but i dont think its really that important to me lol. I just needed a pair of good headphones that didnt hurt the top of my head after 20 minutes like my last ones and they sound great for my standards
@@sidesaladaudio that's nice and all, but that's hardly the only issue with it. xD
Perfect timing, literally just yesterday I got a pair of these! I was even thinking "I wonder when DankPods is gonna have a look at the 109s" lol
listening through my good in-ears i can easily say: they are incredible! i frikin love the sound and bass they combine, with some eq. settings they are amazing. my poor ass is crying right now XD
I love when you review audio equipment because your passion really comes out and I love listening people talk about what they’re passionate about
I love the dankpods headphone reviews. Gotta be one of my favorite categories.
Same, Theres Serious Review and then theres this, and i love it either way
You should speak to Meze about having them fly you out to talk about their process and their philosophy when it comes to sound quality and the ability to repair their products. I think it would make a really fun video!
Thxs for recommending the SR-850s, they are great. So good in fact, that my brother stole em.
I own the meze 99 neo and dank is not lying about the build quality and the sound quality of meze products they are stunning
I bought a pair of 99 Classics because of your video, and I'm currently listening to your video with them ! They're truly amazing, I love Meze since then.
And the "WOW" factor is insane, in one and a half year almost 20 people talked to me about them, they're truly beautiful.
Yeah, they are conversation starters, love mine
do you perhaphs remember the title of his video about the 99 classics? cant seem to find it
@@giuk835 Now that I'm searching the video might have been deleted, but he talks about them in his Xmas 2020 gifts ideas video

Those headphones sound so SMOOTH. I've never heard headphones sound as smooth as those. My gosh I want one!
you have inspired me to start practicing drumming. im workin' on that paradiddle mate!

Love these guys, super comfortable and great sound
Do you own this?
Unfortunately not, but I've tried then several times
I absolutely adore how much passion and hard work goes into all your vids mate. Not only here, but on ALL your channels.
you seem to have too many iPods can i have one? they are darn expensive now.
I was an idiot and snapped the headband on my T1s. I have no used them since, because there are 0 drop in replacements that don't cost WELL OVER $400!!
Repairability? Smooth warm sound? DankPods, you just sold me.
More Mezes? Neato! Nice box design too.
Hope the headphones are just as good
I bought the '99 Classics on your rec and I couldn't be happier. They're incredible when they're on my head and they're incredible when they're sitting on a stand on my desk. 10/10 and these look sick as well.
0:05 Aztec?! It's Art Deco!!!
They sound like the wood looks. Smooth, rich, and warm. Beautiful!
I've been privileged to be able to watch your videos out of pure enjoyment and not need them to get through tough shit, but after my gf of 5 years just broke up with me, I'm really glad to see you've uploaded. You're doing great things.
I promise it gets better. I hope you find peace soon.
Thank you for the Knower drop mate. I don't have a pair of Meze's but it was a treat to hear them on my Senn HD 535s. +1 grit for the slick and quick DnB!
Im majoring in electrical engineering soon, and as someone whos been trying to sing and mix music since being a teenager (and failing), youre really making me want to dig into audio engineering during uni :) waves in EE are just fourier series anyway (I was a teenager until 11 years ago lol)
Hey dude, electrical or audio engineering, go do what you can do best, and just charge forward. Good luck in Uni!
Had to check out Time Traveller... I was not expecting such an assault on my senses. Loved it!
Well, here come the Romanians!
I have been enjoying the meze 99 neo's for the past 2 years and mate, I'm hooked. I did get the grado's Sr80e's on the side, but the fact that you can drag them with ya and drag them over ya greasy head is just amazing. For 200€ they're the best entry headpehonies imo
2:59 Why did I get a shout out
Because you matter
Thanks to you, I bought the AKG 612 Pros with a Soundblaster soundcard (kinda on a budget) and I can't thank you enough for the amount joy these things have brought me. Keep up the amazing content. Love it
yeah i got k612s with a $60 chinese tube amp and the headphones sound great but idk about that amp
I’m not certain but I think it’s because it would be really hard to make it sound good both ways, and that would be mostly a thing for the people that want it to sound good
I love mezes classic 99s recently took em on a flight for the first time and they’d so comfy and the hard case is a blessing

I work in IT so it makes me extremely happy to see products that can be easily repaired like these.
my bf got the 99 neo as a christmas gift from work a couple years ago, and when i first listened to music through these... sweet jesus on a bike it was ANOTHER EXPERIENCE
I honestly love the sound of my beryllium tweeters in my floor standers, they are exceedingly crisp.
Dude, seriously I can listen to you blather on about damn near anything. You definitely rolled and 18 charisma my dude. Keep up the good work!
I feel like I just saw Frank in a way I wasn't supposed to, not sure how to feel about it.
My god these these are a work of art, even down to the design encouraging user servicing. Gorgeous!
As a Romanian, I love that "Designed and made in Romania" text on the side
Sparks a bit of proudness in my country
you are the reason i bought the 99 neo's back in january and i love everything about them, thank you for showing these amazing headphones
I actually got a pair of these last week! And they sound and feel wonderful. Hearing the sound comparison with them felt pretty funny as I'm using the same headphones to watch this lol.
regarding the topic of cases, you could have some cases 3D printed!! That's actually a perfect application for it, thinking about it.
I bought my first pair of meze because of you. The funny thing is that I'm a Romanian and I learned about them while watching your channel.
I will never tire of him waving his hand back and forth to demonstrate dynamic drivers
You really came up with a genius way to close out your videos. I can never close the video until I see the Frank bit at the end 🙂
From what I remember, part of the reason Meze headphones look so nice and most of them come with travel cases is that the founder travels a lot and wanted headphones that he could travel with, were comfortable, and didn't look ugly.
In the art of war, victory is achieved by using the Meze 109 PRO headphones to drown out your opponents trash talk while gaming
you should make a video going over a bunch of your favorite songs to listen to with good headphones. Like the really wide, and really good bass, high dynamic range and such.
He made a video of songs he uses to test headphones
I got myself a set of Neo 99s after watching your other video that featured them. 1 year later, I'm still in love with them.
