Another tip is while in scan mode look for the dark orange nodes. A single shot will destroy the node and shoot out resources. Recycling the shift 2 scan will repopulate nodes.
You can fill up a M miner with just shooting a few nodes. The asteroids provide a lot more yield than what the scans say doing this, and faster than trying to mine the whole rock.

I'm very new at the game, so I might have missed something. But I can't find a place where I can buy a small or medium ship ! All the places I've seen sell only L and XL mining ships. I'm confused.

XL and L ships are bought at the shipyards, what you want to find is a wharf, where you can purchase M and S ships.

No, the updates you get are free every time they release dlc. Only ships and sectors realistically are additional
