    I've been catching pretty huge jacksmelt off the pier in Oakland by the bridge, and some in emeryville but the bite there has been REALLY hit or miss. I need some new spots, but ultralight in the bay is good fun. Chasing stripers gets tiring after a while

      It's definitely fun when you have light tackle. It's honestly a lot harder to catch them like this if you don't have a light/ultra-light action setup. You need to be able to see and feel the bite then be able to keep them on.

    Cool video. What kind of setup are you using? Also, are you using mono line with this setup? Thanks🤙🏽

      Use any ultra light action rod and a light reel. I have tried to do this with medium action poles and it's a lot harder to link up on em. You really need the light action rod to see and feel the bite so you can get a good set and steady reel in. They come off the hook really easy, so you have to be gentle with them. In this video I was just using a freshwater 6lb braid tied straight to the swivel and lure. If I had to do it the right way I would probably just do a 6lb braid. With a 6lb fluorocarbon leader line. Which is basically the setup that I use for lake trout. When I do this I just grab one of my freshwater lake setups and go. They are not picky fish. The only thing you need to do is feel the bite and keep them on. Light tackle, light gear.

    Mind sharing where you were throwing your net? Been on the search for a place without the threat of losing your net to the rocks.

      The spot I was throwing the net at in this video is "Joinville Park" in San Mateo. If you want to message me on IG I will send you some map locations of where to throw around here. My IG is (@DjDunkzSF)

    Nice catches! Do they hang out at Coyote November thru April?

      But November-April is a good time to fish them. I fish them around this time while I wait for Halibut and striped bass to come back.

      Cool thanks! Yeah need to get my yayas out while waiting for spring stripers. When you find a school of smelt do they tend to stick around there for a couple hours? Do they tend to move spots from one day to the next, or can you fish them in the same spot for several days? Does it matter if the tide is high, low, incoming or outgoing? Tried to fish for them on the east shore SF today but didn't find any. Will keep looking, thanks!🤘

      @@HuyNguyen-lu3zj Try to fish them near harbors in more shallow areas where the tide goes in and out, filling up the shallow areas. Coyote point has a lot of good spotS for smelt.

      @@HuyNguyen-lu3zjAnd yes, they tend to hang around for a while. There are usually lots and lots of them.

    I usually fish for them under a bobber but I wanna try this!

    • @TheBayAreaPlug
      @TheBayAreaPlug  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yea most people use the bobber technique. But this is way more interactive. If you like to throw lures this is super fun with a light tackle setup.

    A .5oz kastmaster works extremely well. The largest jack smelt I have ever seen in person or online was 18 inches. I caught it from the surf and was sure it was a striper until I saw it. 😂
