Is 2024 The Year Coin Collecting Returns To Form?

- Today we take a look at the potentially exciting future of collecting for 2024. The Mint have implemented the new EQL ballot system and as the new effigy coins begin to become a more common sight, perhaps collectors will begin to breathe a sigh of relief as the market eases back into a familiar state which allows true collectors to flourish once more!

Thanks Matt🙆♂️, the hobby of kings ( and us commoners!). In 2024, I hope to pick up some 1 gram bars, maybe an old sovereign and some silver coins of interest 🙏.
Nice one Jamie!! Best of luck and thanks for watching!!
Wishful thinking Mat. I'm still waiting for the 2024 mint set to be released. I can't remember the last time it wasn't released late November or early December the previous year. The Queen has been gone well over a year. September 2022. Even a government dept should be able to sort it out by now.
I'm expecting them to be coming shortly, I think between the World Money Fair in Berlin and the ANDA Show in 2 weeks they have been quite busy but I'm hoping 2024 is a solid year for releases!
Thanks for watching mate!
Always OPTIMISTIC 👋😊👍
Thanks for watching!! 😊😊
I agree hopefully a great year for it😂
If I may.. this is my (probably unpopular) opinion. I For those of the generation who grew up collecting the original Pokémon cards (before you could generally bulk-buy booster packs and boxes), we always hoped to get the almighty shiny Charizard. And regardless of how many packs we bought, a Charizard was never guaranteed. It was a rare card. Coins with limited mintages are technically rare coins - especially proof limited edition coins aimed at collectors. This means that people will miss out. When did we, as collectors, change? For me, the hunt was always half the fun. When did the mindset change to entitlement? As if we as collectors are entitled to obtain the rarer released coins? I don't get this mentality. Yes, it sucks if you miss out, and boy have I missed out on coins I wanted. However, that's what my wish-list is for.
The Oxford dictionary defines collecting" "systematically seek and acquire (items of a particular kind) as a hobby". Seek and acquire. Seek is literally half the experience of collecting.
And with any collectable, there will be those who acquire to keep and those who acquire to flip (whether flipping in a day, a week, a decade's time). And prices are set by what people are willing to pay for said item.
Yes, I hate the bots, but we can't fault an influx of people wanting to making money. Eventually they will want to offload if they can't sell at higher prices, and that's the time to acquire. And waiting is often the mark of a genuine collector who truly wants the coin as opposed to those who will eventually flip it.
"When did we, as collectors, change?" That's a really great question, and I can only give a sample-size-of-one answer. With the example of a Charizard, a collector buys a card and thinks, "There's a chance. It's a tiny chance, but I'm in with a chance." With RAM releases over the last few years, a collector thinks, "There's no chance. Not even a tiny chance." To my mind, the resignation to a "I don't have any chance" mindset is when we, as collectors, changed. I'm hopeful the adoption of EQL by the RAM brings back the "chance".
@@SomeNewKid Don't sit on the phone calling the Ram. Create a relationship with a few coin dealers. A lot of them send out an email on the day of release and it's tap link add to cart and buy.
💯
@@SomeNewKid To be honest, there has always been a chance, bots or not. I'm sure EQL will be beneficial to some (if you're successful with one release, you have less of a chance being picked for the next releases), however there are a whole list of authorised dealers. I rarely obtain any release day purchases from the RAM itself and I do buy online. You win some, you lose some, but FOMO is not a healthy method of collecting. More people need to free themselves of the burden of FOMO. Any modern coin is obtainable, we must remember that patience is a virtue. Otherwise, the only thing we'll be collecting is grey hair and an increased risk of heart attack. I refer to my earlier point; the hunt is half the fun.
A very interesting thought, I might have to make a video to elaborate on my thoughts rather than 1000 word essay! Thanks for commenting!
I'd like to consider myself a genuine collector. I definitely agree that its the greatest hobby in the world.
I've tried a few others and nothing else has come close! Thanks for watching and I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying the journey! 😊
How you doing, TSC?
@@jamiefrost2091 I'm doing great my friend, how are you doing buddy?
I'm very new to collecting, but just love the look of the coins and yes I take my time researching the coins I like. Not for the monetary value but for what i like
Nice one Bryan that's a great way to maximise your enjoyment whilst collecting!
@@ThompsonsCoins thank you, I have been noodling each day not finding much, but enjoy it so much I'm addicted, when I see something i like, I then will look for a unc one. Thanks for your videos, great help 👍
Matt, aside from waiting for the next Australian Wildflower coin, are you able to research what happened to the Cameroon 500 Francs Language of Flowers series? 2020 had the Pansy and 2021 had the Lily, and then nothing -- ten more designs were planned but nothing released. Its my favorite NCLT!! Mennica Polska (Mint of Poland) doesn't reply to my emails.
I always buy what I like... lol
That’s the best way to collect 👍
I think you'll always be rewarded when you collect in that manner! 🥳🥳👍
HI Matt,
Been a collector for a lot of years now and i am not sure i will stay a collecting. The last two years i could not buy a coin
That i likes my wife was so frustrated trying to buy coins from shop likes yours . Not saying it was your fault . I am sure you understand
What i am trying to say. I work away from home which also makes it hard . You cant be on the pnone and emails while you are working.
And i know i am not the only one that has given up . Anyhow i hope your are right and their is light at the end of the coin tunnels.
All the best to you in 2024.
Regard Paul,
Thanks Paul! I'm very hopeful that as the year progresses I may be able to offer more stock on popular releases but time will tell! 😊 Thanks for the support!
I think the Australian Mint can’t win no matter what they do , they ether make to many coins making them basically worth nothing or they make the mintage so low that a lot of collectors just get sick of the crap they have to go through that they quit . Still beats collecting stamps 😂
You're absolutely right Kayne! They are often the subject of heated feedback but the people who are giving the feedback are seldom able to provide viable alternatives, I think some people just want to vent 🤓
…aaannnndddd Reuben !!
I like your channel mate. I’m loving the coin content. Particularly the bullion coins.
For me right now, it’s sovereigns. 😁
A fascinating thought I had in listening....Many major governments are looking to move most, if not all to digital currency. If we were to take a time machine 20 years to the future, would governments issue coins? What would that do to value of today's coins? What do you think about the idea that IF coin collecting had such a following that it aided in the stopping of governments move towards all digital currency? Sorry about the randomness...I just started thinking while listening to you talk about this years outlook.
Can't see cash disappearing anytime soon. It has its uses. When the internet breaks down, for example.
Gold and silver coins will always have intrinsic value, rare coins will always be rare and collectable, the mints around the world will continue to produce coins for investors and collectors. Coins will become a finite resource and confined to history at this point and every coin therefore could become a collectors item. I am sure a few more museums will enthuse a new generation of collectors that will not see coins on a daily basis but I personally believe the only way is up. There are so many defunct denominations and currencies and so much history with coins, perhaps now is the time to cherry pick. Only time will tell, but bullion coins are a great safe option.
Let’s hope it is just a dream of government control and not a reality… knowing what could be in 20 years is just about impossible… can you imagine that we would have computers in our pockets 20 years ago? I could not.
@@cultureofcurrencyThe government here is trying to shut down access to cash, a lot of local banks have been closed leaving only ATMs for many people which despence only limited amounts of cash. I can see banks eventually charging for cash withdrawals and when cash has gone they will start charging for current accounts, it will not be too long. That is why I collect gold coins. I used to program space invaders on my Amstrad CPC 464, the best computer.
I think demand in any form is good for collectors generally. No one uses stamps much any more so young people no longer seem interested. Lack of demand has seen prices fall. That's not a good thing in my opinion. I just hope coins don't go the same way.
Dragons, baby
looks like we might get 4 different effigies on the lunar series...unprecedented
Hi Matt, when will the 2024 RAM Lunar series $1 AlBr Uncirculated Two Coin Set - Year of the Dragon be released? I remembered previous years the lunar series coins came out at the end of the previous year of release. Thanks!
Think I seen it in the post office this week .
A great question! I haven't heard any word on them just yet but expect a video when they finally show up! Maybe in the next month or two I'm actually not sure
It's time for true collectors to get the coins they want
I truly believe that and hope to be part of the positive movement forward with the industry! 🥳🥳
Hey matt do you recommend any books or knowledge about roman coins trying to get into that field :)
I light a candle in honour of those poor unfortunate souls who work for PCGS and have a steady flow of $2 coloured coins flow across their desks 😢
Hahahaha it must be truly mind numbing to grade so many of the same coin 🤣
👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching Stephen! 😊
Aye Thommo beaut hobby
I have a 1944,1947,1951,1957,1956 australian penny does it worth anything, can you help?
Thanks Matt, I always appreciate your positiveness, dedication and belief in the future of coin collecting. I am hopeful of a fairer and brighter future for all interested in our great hobby. If you look at the past limited releases and multitudes of them listed straight away on eBay at the moment for double original price or more, it is proof that the current system is broken. Although I am glad that those who managed to ‘WIN’ a chance to purchase them and who don’t appreciate the hobby are now stuck selling them, it doesn’t help the genuine people who would have loved and treasured the opportunity to have one and/or continue their collection of them. Therefor not truly being collectors items will they still be valuable in the future? 🍻
Thanks for watching Jim! As with any area there will always exist individuals who are involved exclusively to line their pockets but hopefully new systems increase the overall fairness of releases and I am a believer that any coin with a popular theme, appealing design and limited mintage will always maintain a certain level of collector demand 😊
You have to wait 12 months to buy a new car. Coins are not the only "limited editions". Trading cards. Sneakers. Tickets to concerts. I just don't understand these type of complaints.
I found if I keep a regular lookout there are more sellers who appear to be willing to part with stunning encapsulated coins for barely more than spot! These finds are very exciting. Great video as always mate.@@ThompsonsCoins
I hate the king on the coins get him off the coins
I appreciate the suggestion but I'm not yet influential enough to impact currency laws in Australia, maybe one day though! 🤣 Maybe when I hit a million subscribers??
