    Beautiful, dynamic, powerful, music with great emotion. Your fader control really ads to this. Thanks for sharing this extremely informative instruction on audio routing and automation!!

    This is a really wonderful tutorial, Dan, and I certainly wish you would do more of them! Very clear and well thought out. I'm setting up many things this way now, not only orchestral. Thank you so much! (AND you really have me convinced to use automation by grabbing sliders rather than via the tedious drawing method from here on. I agree with you on the drawing method that "it's for the birds." I've overcome my timidity with recording automation live thanks to your influence!) Favorite line that just sticks in my head now: "It's really just plumbing."

    drumandbes, I use individual aux sends when I am NOT mixing music that is supposed to be in a concert hall setting. Watch and listen again from 14 minutes through 16 minutes, I specifically explain the importance of signal routing with instruments to group masters, and then group masters to reverb channels IN THAT ORDER. For classical music in a hall setting, you would never want to use aux sends for reverb because all that does is ADD reverb to a mix. I hope that is more clear, Dan

      that was quite some time ago when I made that video, but most if not all of it still pertains to DP10, I am glad it helped you.

    the way I show in the video allows us the freedom to suddenly jerk the group master (for automation) and even that sudden movement up or down is reflected in the reverb properly. Are you saying you still want to use aux sends? Why, just trying to help, the video is very clear.

    Dan - Nice video. Your CC editing in the violin track is impeccable! I think what some people are not understanding here is that although you could have used sends to the reverb if you would have put the sends in pre-fader mode, in orchestral music that's set in a hall you want both the instrument group and the room to swell and sustain together to emulate what happens in a real orchestral hall setting. Using a send post fader would unnaturally pull down the volume of the reverb (which does not happen in nature), and using a send pre fader would separate the sound of the instruments from the room when the fader is moved (again, causing an unnatural effect).

    I got it! In my case (with sends) there is dry signal always, but you need 100% wet. Right?

  • @FilmForger
    @FilmForger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great arrangements and tutorial...but can't you assign all the reverb to an Aux Track, adding a Reverb Bus thru Bundles and use that track for all the reverb using the Sends for each track that needs reverb?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, but with orchestral music mixing and Altiverb, you will never get a natural reverberant sound by just adding some reverb to the dry sound because the dry sound will always still be in the mix. The instruments need to be "IN" the mud :) That's what the stage positioning feature of Altiverb is for. I hope that wasn't confusing. :)

    • @FilmForger
      @FilmForger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-jx3jp3gb4x - Yeah, I kinda see what you're saying - almost like when u hear an orchestra live you never really hear the dryness of an instrument (unless you're in the first row) but doesn't everything end up in the stereo mix at the end result? What you are describing (I think) is more like a Surround Sound or 5 channel mix where u can divide the reverbs for different sections in different areas? (Which is above my head) - I apologize for my ignorance - because you have excellent results - I am just a Rock Engineer /Musician who never mixed an Orchestra (but I have set up mics and headphones for 80 piece orchestras in NYC) but never paid attention to the actual recording and mixing - Thanks for your response.

      I think I will go out on a limb and say that the "most" common practice for "adding" reverb in a mix is with the individual aux sends sending dry signal to a reverb or reverbs, and then returning the left and right outputs of that reverb back into the mix. Altiverb by Audio Ease is my favorite "Impulse Response" reverb because of the stage positioning feature, which allows you to place sounds anywhere on a virtual stage, which is critical with orchestral music mixing. Pop, funk, rock, rap, jazz, country and just about all other genres use the old school practice of aux sends. When you have some time, visit the Audioease.com website and watch some of the videos on their Altiverb software. There are other companies that have done their best to copy and duplicate this IR technology but in my humble opinion, none of those other companies come even close to Altiverb, for so many reasons. If you watch the videos, you will learn that Altiverb is not just for people mixing classical music. When you buy Altiverb, you are getting tons of vintage gear like the old Lexicon reverbs and many others. You can also create your own Impulse Responses of acoustic spaces and even audio gear. Check it out. th-cam.com/video/EpzNgP8uThs/w-d-xo.html

    I'm new ti digital performer and I'm wondering how you route to your stereo MIX track because when I do that I get no sound. I have virtual instrument in kontakt going to track like you show but when I try to send to the MIX track its silent. The meters works but I'm hearing nothing.

    Yes, it's clean. I just think you can send group masters to reverb channels and it will be the same. Channel's level is changing but reverb is still breathing.

  • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
    @user-jx3jp3gb4x  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    all the instruments should reverberate equally in a concert hall. With all other types of music mixing,, yes I user aux sends the traditional way, but unless you have Altiverb this won't make any sense until you hear it in action as the video demonstrates.

  • @user-jx3jp3gb4x

    100% wet yes, but if you are using Altiverb you should not use individual sends for the most realistic sound. :)

    Hi there, Would you happen to know how to transfer DP3 sessions to pro tools?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the closest thing you can do in DP is to use "Save As", then choose OMF. This preserves much of the data, and as far as I know, Pro Tools still imports OMF projects. Let me know how it goes :) Dan

  • @JRAMACARTEL

    orchestra section group masters (woods, brass, perc, strings) ARE sent to their own separate Aux track (not aux send) where Altiverb is inserted and the mix (dry/wet) setting of Altiverb is ALWAYS full 100%. The stage positioning is what determines how wet or close the instruments sound. Your last statement does not make any sense I I think you are confused or not using the proper terminology. The logical thing to do is to route the section groups directly to Aux tracks with Altiverb inserted.
