Amazon Basics 3 way smart switch installation with a standard 3 way switch

  • I am NOT a professional electrician.
    I am sharing my experience with installing the Amazon Basics 3 way smart switch that works with Alexa.
    This is to show how I replaced an existing 3 way switch with the amazon 3 way smart switch along with another existing 3 way switch that was already installed.
    The amazon switch must be installed on the "load" side of the circuit as I explain in the video.
    I am not a professional and do not recommend following these steps unless you know exactly what you are doing. This is very dangerous and can result in serious injury or death.
    Hire a professional electrician if you are not confident in what you are doing and do not fully understand the instructions included in the amazon basics 3 way smart switch manual.

    Dude. You are my freaking hero. Got that done in just under 5 hours. Exact time was 4 hours and 97 minutes. So frustrating but you saved me. Thank god it took less that 5 hours or I would have went postal.

      Wait! But isn’t 4 hours and 97 minutes just another way of saying 5 hours and 37 minutes. So it still took you over 5 hours. Lol.
      I get you, you probably mean 4h57min

    You just saved me from returning the switches i bought! Thank you! This is the only tutorial that's easy enough for the average person to understand!

    After two days trying to get this to work I watched this and it did the trick! A note for others (and it could be my lack of understanding) - I have a red and a black traveler. If I attached the black traveler to Line, the red traveler turned hot no matter what the dumb switch position. I had to attach the red traveler to Line - then the black traveler was cold/hot depending if the dumb switch was off/on.

    Out of all the videos I watched, this the most helpful. I didn’t realize I had to turn the traveler wire into a line wire. Thank you!

    I am really lucky I found this. Opened up the smart switch and was so confused by the brown wire. I found that exact diagram on Amazon for the 3 way dimmer and was even more confused. Thank you so much for making this video. Kind of incredible that there wasn't already a tutorial for this, because you've got to imagine this is the most common installation scenario.

    Thank you for making this video! Your hand-drawn circuit diagram was much easier to follow than the jumbled mess in the instruction manual! Your video saved me from a big headache!

    One thing you can mention is that the “load” 3-way switch essentially become a standard switch and the smart switch takes care of the the rest.

    Thanks for posting this video I installed the same switch today and it worked out the same as your install.
    I did the very same thing with a ring Doorbell Pro install, I couldn't find a video installing 2 doorbells front door and back door so I did my own showing how I did it.
    Again thanks for the video it worked.

    I read about installing the traditional three-way switch but could not make sense of the wire configuration here. After a while, I suddenly realized that this smart "electrical" switch did not flip a physical switch inside. The traditional 3-way switch acts as a signal switch and the "Traveler" is a signal line. When you flip the traditional 3-way switch, it sends a signal requesting the Smart switch to turn on/off the light. The light is ultimately controlled by the smart switch no matter which physical switch you flip.

    My switches have four wires. One also goes the the green on the bottom left. Does that change if this would work?

    Not sure where to tie the 1st traveler into power, or can it just be capped off.

    • @Jeffcurry27
      @Jeffcurry27  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cap it with the how wire coming into the first switch. Along with a 3 inch wire going from the cap to the 1st switch for power. See my diagrams I drew.

      Thks for quick your response. So if I follow correctly. I can also hook the BLACK traveler to the blk screw on the regular first switch and get same results?

    • @Jeffcurry27
      @Jeffcurry27  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lesterwalker1271 yea I guess? In that case the black wire from the breaker would need to connect the black screw; and then the black traveler wire would also need to connect to the black screw on the first switch. That's why I did a separate junction rather than trying to connect 2 wires to a single screw

    • @Jeffcurry27
      @Jeffcurry27  ปีที่แล้ว

      Try flipping your other switch and then see if it works? That's the problem I had when I first installed incorrectly. You probably have the wires hooked up to the wrong wires on the smart switch. Also make sure you are installing the smart switch on the switch that is second in line from the breaker. I explain that in the video. Try watching again and double check everything you have done.

    • @angellantz8289

    • @Jeffcurry27
      @Jeffcurry27  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angellantz8289 see if you can draw a diagram of the wiring you did and maybe that will help you figure out what is wrong.

    • @Jeffcurry27
      @Jeffcurry27  ปีที่แล้ว

      Also if you disconnect the wires from the switches and turn the power on you can determine which wire is Hot. There should only one hot wire when everything in that circuit is disconnected. It should be one wire coming from the breaker to your first regular 3 way switch. This is described in the first minute in my video I believe
