I’m housesitting at a residence of a friend and as long as I’ve known him, his 3-way light has never worked. While housesitting, I couldn’t stand it! One box had a 3-way and the other had a regular switch. I went out, bought 2 new switches and replaced them, wiring them as per the first method in your video. Works like a charm! I videoed it and have sent it to my friend insisting he show his wife.😊 Thanks!

I was about to give up on getting 2 switches to work on a single light in an old house (a 12-3 wire was already going between the two switches but one switch was dead). I have a book describing just one method and I've searched the internet for other options. No-go. I was about to give up on this preexisting wire job and just live with one dead switch. Then I found this video, stayed with it to watch your second method, and BINGO! I can't thank you enough. Now we can turn a light on when we come in from the garage without tripping in the dark to get to a light switch. Can't thank you enough!
Thank you for adding the 2nd method. I was so frustrated trying to rewire an old 2-way the first way and finding that it did not work because the previous installation was done using the 2nd method. Also, you are very clear and easy to follow. I wish someone like you could teacher in high schools so that students could leave knowing how to fix a number of problems that occur in homes as well as save money on a possible future build.
The reason they do the first method nowadays is because if someone were to change the light switch out with a dimmer later there's a neutral available. Most dimmers afaik require a neutral. Code in my area requires neutrals in all boxes even if they are not connected to anything. Josh is cool.
I’m currently building a tiny house and your videos have taught me so much! I have been able to do all of my own electrical and pass inspection, as well as save me $7000 by following your videos. Thank you so much!

Hey Patrick! I appreciate you watching my videos. Sounds like you are a go-getter. I love building houses and showing people what I am doing as I go. Take care!
I enjoyed this video even more so than several others as I am about to be wiring a 3 way for my brother in the in law quarters home for the living room by the entry and the other side at the Garage entry. So Thank you very helpful I thought I had a fair Grip on it anyways but this video seals the deal for me.
Great. Now a question for you. In an installed and wall blind situation (House where you don't know which wire is which) How can you identify, of the two 3 ways switches, which one gets direct load brought in from the circuit and which switch is the one that carries the black wire to lamp/device?
Great, informative video! The only thing I don't like in this video are those copper crimp sleeves you used on your grounds. They don't seem like they bond the two wires together very well. Both times you twisted them together, when you cut and folded the tail over, the sleeve slipped back. I would either use the wago connectors or the green wire nuts with the pass through for pig tails.
Your videos are very informative really appreciate your time, I also like your video editing, fast forwarding etc not like some others they are so drawn-out and becomes boring and frustrating to watch. Your systems and products are different to my country NZ but basics are the same thank you again can't wait for the garage build cheers
I must say, I like how everything is explained in these videos. Very clear. I'm definitely going to keep checking your other videos. Now, one thing I would suggest (just an opinion) is for any installer to double check the power going into the cables even after you turn off the breakers. Remember, safety first brother. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Question: I'm wiring my new shop and for my lighting inside and outside I have a 2 gang box with a 3 way switch for the ceiling lights and a Sunsmart All-in-One timer for the outside lights. How would you bundle the wires knowing you have a neutral pigtail coming from the timer. The box has one power source. I watched your video on how to wire A 3-way light switch. In your video the second method is how my setup is. For some reason I'm having a hard time visualizing the proper bundling of wires. Wire size is 14/2 and 14/3. Can you help? By the way, great video Thanks.
Great Video my FRIEND! I was able to wire the kid's playhouse with 4 outlets, 2 three way switches and a regular switch with the help of your videos! Keep up the good work!
I’m so glad I could help you. I know they can be complicated if you don’t have experience with them. Good luck with all of your projects and thanks for watching!
I have just started an addition to our house. Some of it (framing, roofing) I'm not willing to do myself, but most of the other jobs I'm up for the challenge! Is there any chronological order for your house building videos? That have been SUPER helpful already in building my confidence to tackle these jobs.
Even if you have someone else framing it's a good idea to know why they're doing what they're doing. I recommend watching the Larry Haun video where he built a house for his sister with the help of his brother... it was an early how-to video 📹 originally on 📼. He was a darn good framer and later went to work for Habitat For Humanity to make instructional videos for them. A TH-cam search should find him
this is super helpful, I'm certain your channel will surpass 1 million subscribers soon after you cross the 100k sub count. there isn't any other youtuber that describes work as easy as you. you could show this video to children and they'll understand.

Rodney, yeah me too😁 I got a little confused on how the juice was flowing but of course I'm watching this 14 hours later and I'm totally tired, lol. Great job Josh! I'll watch tjis again tomorrow wen I'm a lot less tired lolol. Take care buddy.
Always had a problem understanding the three way but I seriously clicked on way you explained it. I really believe I can do this now. If only I seen this earlier. Thanks
Thank you, I was trying to wire from a wiring diagram that didn't identify which terminals were which. It looked like a match but it wasn't. In a few days I have a timer coming that will replace one of them. The timer being for the lay light that keeps the chickens laying on the short winter days and the swith being for if I need to check on the chickens after lights out.
You know what??? I always wondered how it's works .until now....Thank you very much. This lesson is pure gold to me ( my Christmas gift from you ). Have a wonderful holidays. .. thanks again bye....
I meant Josh but I love your channel, I was inspired when in another video you said you pulled permits yourself. I think I'll try that. Thanks for a great channel. I have a question about multiple 3 way switches in the same J-Box. So, when you enter my Tiny House and on the left is a wall switch, with 4 different 3 way switches. Each 3-way switch controls a different operation. One does ceiling lights, the other does Front porch lights, the third 3-way controls the deck lights and the Fourth 3 way switch controls an outlet at ceiling level for a rope light (LED). I know I can run 14/2 from the panel to the J-box and get power to the switches. Here is where I'm a bit unsure! I need to run 14/3 to the other J-Box that has Four 3 way switches that operates the same as the front door J-box. Do I have to run 4 different 14/3 runs? is there a way to combine those runs onto just one run? and if so how might that work? Thanks for your help!
I personally find the first method easier to do but is there a scenario where you’d want to use one method over the other? I’m in the middle of a kitchen remodel and am about to start running electrical. Thanks!
Your videos are very informative and easy to understand.keep up your hard work in educating people around you and world so that they can save plenty of money and time and manage their own electrical needs . Awesome 💐💐way to go buddy.
I recently watch an old video of you roughing in elec for a bedroom and it was very informative. Do you have another video of all the power coming together at the light switch ?
very nice video - I knew one way to do this three-way switch, but for some reason, it always tripped the circuit breaker - now thanks to you, I know two more ways - So, I think I will throw away my first way and use these two ways to do 3-way switches - I do wonder if one really needs to know 3 ways to do a 3-way switching connection - hummm..
The second example on the 3 way is a good one. Kinda shows what you can do with the neutral. And the light doesn't always come out of the second switchbox sometimes it comes out of the one the powers going into.
Hello Excellent. I have to rewire two light fixtures in my garage and convert them to 3 wire. Both are on single pole now. Is there a diagram for both lights to go on at same time? Or easy explanation? THUMBS UP!!!
My 3-way switch delemma is a light above each 3-way switch (two lights total). There's 14-2 going to a light at bottom of stairs, and another 14-2 in the box top of stairs for the other light. Then 14-3 connecting both. Power comes in (another 14-2) at bottom of stairs.
Really great demonstration. How about using a 3-way switch to select between a dimmed circuit and switched non-dim circuit to operate kitchen under cabinet or overhead lights.

Excellent presentation........You made something I seldom do so much easier.
I always try to make my videos easy to follow. Thanks a lot for watching!
You were born to teach. Thanks for you're knowledge sharing, talent, and hard work.
Great video, thanks for the help. I added LED can lights to my kitchen on a new 3 way switch circuit. Your video helped make sense of the process.
He explains it so well learned so much. And he's not an electron so cool. 👍
Good luck with all of your projects and thanks for watching!
the other account was hacked and can't get into it ... so I'll go through the vids and re like them from here. Thanks for letting me know Josh
Hey Thor! Sorry to hear that. Welcome back!
A TH-cam search should find him
Excellent video - very detailed, well-explained, and extremely helpful. Thanks for posting it!
Glad it was helpful!
*Easy install, so far Works great **Fastly.Cool** !*
Again, great job explaining and gives two common scenarios. Wish he ran a trade school. Great teacher.
I appreciate it that! Thank you for watching and this comment!
U just saved me hours of trail and error. Thanks
Helped me figure out a problem i had tonight. Thanks!!!
this is super helpful, I'm certain your channel will surpass 1 million subscribers soon after you cross the 100k sub count. there isn't any other youtuber that describes work as easy as you. you could show this video to children and they'll understand.
Thank you Lucada! That would be so awesome to get 1 million subscribers one day. I appreciate your encouragement. Take care!
Thank you so much!!! I was able to figure out my wiring with your Method 2!
Great informative video, it helped me solve installing switches in my daughter's home. Thank you.
This is the best one i've seen so far
Good example! Would appreciate a little wiring diagram & quick explanation as to how the electricity is flowing for these 3- ways. Just trying to understand it!
Hey Rodney! This video th-cam.com/video/n1AM1BZ_c2o/w-d-xo.html is one I did that has the diagram I used. Yes it’s an interesting switch system. I appreciate you watching!
Rodney, yeah me too😁 I got a little confused on how the juice was flowing but of course I'm watching this 14 hours later and I'm totally tired, lol.
Great job Josh! I'll watch tjis again tomorrow wen I'm a lot less tired lolol. Take care buddy.
Hi Sir good evening I am raja electrician from India your videos very good
Excellent video as always. You have a knack for easy to understand explanations. Much appreciated.
Always had a problem understanding the three way but I seriously clicked on way you explained it. I really believe I can do this now. If only I seen this earlier. Thanks
I try to keep my videos easy to digest and understand. I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Steven!
Thank you. That was the best explanation on this subject I've ever heard. Great job!!
I found the first way easier set up to do -but both ways you are great explaining the techniques 👍
Thank you for keeping it clean and simple!!
Best description I have seen
Thank you!
Man you are a God send. Thank you for making these videos helped me beyond description much love my man
You know what??? I always wondered how it's works .until now....Thank you very much. This lesson is pure gold to me ( my Christmas gift from you ). Have a wonderful holidays. .. thanks again bye....
Thank You so much, you are a professional teacher
Sir you are a amazing teacher. Thank you
I really do appreciate your comment. Thank you!
Thanks for the tuition, training while made redundant.❤
I’ve watched four of your videos in the last 6 weeks…so I figured u earned my subscription! Haha. Thanks man
I meant Josh but I love your channel, I was inspired when in another video you said you pulled permits yourself.
I’m really glad I found your channel
You really helping me a lot
thank you
I am glad you found my channel as well. I’m glad I am able to help you! You’re welcome!
Man Awesome!!! Getting ready to wire my new pole barn!! Learned a lot!!!! Thank you!!!
You are welcome! Good luck with your project!🔨
Great Video !! Thanks for showing the 2nd setup with power and load off the first switch!!
Thanks a lot! I’m glad I could help. Stay tuned for more
I recently watch an old video of you roughing in elec for a bedroom and it was very informative. Do you have another video of all the power coming together at the light switch ?
This will be helpful, because im currently training to be an electrician
Thank you for your demonstration I had forgot how to wire a three way switch
Last explanation help me alot thanks
very nice video - I knew one way to do this three-way switch, but for some reason, it always tripped the circuit breaker - now thanks to you, I know two more ways - So, I think I will throw away my first way and use these two ways to do 3-way switches - I do wonder if one really needs to know 3 ways to do a 3-way switching connection - hummm..
The second example on the 3 way is a good one. Kinda shows what you can do with the neutral. And the light doesn't always come out of the second switchbox sometimes it comes out of the one the powers going into.
Thank you very much for the tips God bless and stay safe
You’re welcome John. I appreciate that and God bless you too!
Okok I’m going back every time I’ll need more knowledge for sure!!🎉🎉
Hello Excellent. I have to rewire two light fixtures in my garage and convert them to 3 wire. Both are on single pole now. Is there a diagram for both lights to go on at same time? Or easy explanation? THUMBS UP!!!
Thanks for your videos my dude. You been a real help building my own house on all your tips n tricks. Best YT page channel ever ❤
You are welcome Alberto! I’m glad you are finding value in my content. I am thankful for subscribers like you! Good luck with your project!
Could you do both these methods with one dimmer switch and one accessory switch? Would be so helpful with all the led dimmers now!
Thank you for this video. It makes it really easy to understand. I can't wait to watch the rest of your videos.
Thanks Rick! I like to keep my videos as informative as possible. Upload a video about once a week. Stay tuned!
I'm learning a lot thanks to you, thank you for sharing and keep up with the good work.
Thanks Noah! I appreciate you watching. Take care 💪🏻
Thanks so much very helpful with very good explanation
You are welcome! I’m glad I can help you out!
Great video. Method 2 was just what I needed.
He is great at what he does.
Great job. It would help if you explained how the current flows through the circuit.
