Great project Carl, and well turned my friend. I can't believe that Christmas is just around the corner! Thanks for mentioning Larry, I am sure we all wish him positive news, and a speedy return to his shop. Take care Mike
Carl you are a joy to the world of wood turners. Thanks for your demo I will have a go at one of those, one day, one day, one day. There is just soooo much that I want to do on the lathe and so little time, and so much shavings and dust right up to my knees.
THANK YOU FOR REPLYING TO MY QUESTION ON THEM INCHES. I THOUGHT THATS WHAT THE NUMBERS I THOUGHT IT WAS. I PLAN TO TRY THE IN AN OUT ORNAMENT YOU MADE I WAS MORE INTO SCROLL SAWING LATELY AND DECIDED TO TRY SOME OF THE ORNAMENTS ON THE LATHE. NICE CONTEST YOU HAD. THERE WERE A LOT OF NICE PROJECTS SENT IN. FRANCIS
I'm not long turning and my instructor was asking me to try some inverted turning this week! So I have homework to do and its going to be a couple of these :) ...
I love inside out turning, I did my first one a couple months ago and it is addicting. I like the hot glue tip. I just taped mine together and I was worried they would shift and not line up when flipped. Luckily it worked out ok but I'll use hot glue on the next one. Regards, Bob
The hot melt glue is a good way for temporary holding peices, my worry was using a standard spur drive as this can still split the turnings. I use the Robert Sorby steb centres as you only have to make a very small mark on centre and then you have the steb part to hold it all together when turning, just another bit of safety
Wow. I would have loved to be around when you gave away your lathe chuck. My new shop needs a chuck and a planer to be complete, but the wife don't want me spending more money. LOL Good videos. Maybe my channel will pick up. I'm about to start uploading more wood videos now.
Same as Bob...I done my first one a couple months ago too. I also turned a small bell and hung inside mine. I just might have to try out your ornament competition. Nice turning and video, as always, Carl :)
Now that's a prize, Carl Jacobson's Nova chuck. Count me in, I want to win that thing :) Great job as well, you make it look so simple. Have a good one, John.
You make that look very easy. As I have a few failed attempts at inside out ornaments I know how difficult it is to get one to "turn" out. Great job! Steve
I always wanted to try an inside out turning and this video convinced me to do an ornament for Christmas. Great video and I look forward to your next one. Thanks.
Great video. I just made my 1st inside out turning this week...was crap but at least I have time to practice before the contest. Loved all the rules. I too hate moles lol Cheers from Nova Scotia Mark
Wow two more pay days to Christmas already :-} Great video Carl, you can count me in for the competition. More importantly thanks for the info regarding Larry, my tenderest prayers and best wishes go out to him. All the best Tony
***** Thank you Tony, Christmas is sneaking up on us fast! I look forward to seeing your entry. I'll see if there is any updates on Larry, and post it on Mondays video. Take care, Carl
Great project! A few thoughts and questions: 1- Were those coins in your pocket are the beginning? :) 2- When possible, could you should the digital readout on your lathe if it is in frame (or close)? This would be helpful for beginners like me who don't know what speed to turn/sand/finish at. 3- How do you sharpen your tools? They always seem so sharp. I just bought a slow speed Rikon grinder which is an improvement over what I had, but it still seems painful. It would also seem painful to spend quite a bit more on a Tormek. Suggestions? Thanks!!
l3ender15 Thank you, 1) Yes I had change in my pocket :) 2) I'll try to get the readout in frame more, and try to mention it. 3) I have a slow speed grinder as well, and a Wolverine sharping system. Take care, Carl
Carl, how deep should the initial cove cut be, or, alternatively, what proportion of the overall starting width of the piece should be left before it's split apart? I understand that the more material is removed the thinner the resulting walls will be but what is the safe limit?
It seems to me yesterday that was cold and we're again in Autumn! You're right, Xmas is coming and we have to turn for ornaments!! Beatiful work as ever, Carl, next week I will start to turn for Christmas in my spare time...
Carl nice turning!Christmas already wow. I hope the tiny trailer guy gets better soon one of the things I first things I saw on you tube was a vase he made from a 2x4. It was awesome! Maybe I'll get my ornament sent to the right place, I didn't fair so well on my bird house lol. Thanks for all you do. Mark
Nice project Carl. That time of year is coming fast and I need to get started, the Mrs has plans for quite a few of those. Interesting handle on the gouge you were using. Mind if I ask what it is and where it came from? Thanks for sharing. Fred
Carl I am looking at attempting a 4 inch diameter one of these any hints and tips, by the way if you have another chuck with 3/4 16 it would be most appreciated as the compact Record one I have and only used it for about a month keeps throwing pieces at me
Oh wow that's such a pretty ornament, think I'll try making one tomorrow. Does being in Australia automatically exclude me from your contest? I do understand shipping overseas is crazy expensive!
Hi Carl, Great video- I would like to ask for a little help. I have one on the lathe now, and I want to add a chrome ball / with a bell inside the ball.. to the void area when I reverse it. RJBWoodTurner The hot glue works very well, and it's easy to pull apart. I think next time I'm going to use packing tape though.
Take care,
Carl
Was there an issue with the duct tape? Packing tape is so pricy that I usually use duct tape too. Just curious.
Regards,
Bob
RJBWoodTurner I didn't have a problem, but I think the packing tape is stronger. So I was just thinking better safe than sorry.

Sweet!
A lovely inside out ornament
Could you use a solid block of wood , instead of gluing four pieces and quarter it after the inside turning?
Thanks
James
Thank you James! You might be able to, but you would have to make sure they were exact.
Sounds like fun. I do need a new chuck :)
Custom Chris I look forward to seeing your entry.

The thickness of the wood will determine how far you need to go in. I would leave them about 1/4" thick until you get the hang of it.

Andrea Arzensek Thank you Andrea
It,s been awhile Carl, I spy that you have gotten some fancy tools with aluminum handles and stuff ! Happy turning !
***** :) Ya I went all Hollywood! lol
Carl Jacobson Are they sturdier than the wooden handled ones, they shure look it !

Got to be worth a laugh, I'm in. I shall add it to the list of things I'm rubbish at.
lol
Tom Speirs lol Look forward to seeing your entry.
I should say that I was thinking of trying to make an inside-out spinning top with a Beads of Courage insert in the middle.
That sounds very neat, I haven't tried a inside-out top.
cool I think im going to enter all these contest
Alan Rodriguez :) Awesome!
Sounds like fun. I take it you really like that new chuck?
IBDaddyO I look forward to your entry.
just going to ask a question. What in inches is 1 1/5 x 1 1/5 7 inches long.
Thanks for your help. Francis
Francis Ansay 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" 7" I'm not sure? is this what your asking?
Carl I am looking at attempting a 4 inch diameter one of these any hints and tips, by the way if you have another chuck with 3/4 16 it would be most appreciated as the compact Record one I have and only used it for about a month keeps throwing pieces at me

Kim Stuart-Gregory Thank you Kim, the contest will be world wide. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Do you have a video showing making Chefware's oyster and clam knife?
Michael Perry I haven't done a video on that yet.
If you put the piece in a microwave for a few seconds, the hot glue will soften and come apart easily. Maybe 20 seconds for a piece this small
Great tip Greg!
Carl I noticed that when you are using the spindle gauge the flute is almost fully open, do you not get any chatter or catches??
sharp tools and the type of wood and grain.
Hi Carl. Did I miss the lathe chuck giveaway? I really need one so I can do all the really nice projects like you can.
Have you ever used your inside out turning for furniture
No I haven't done any large pieces.
Excellent love it...! Cheers...
Adam Quincey Thanks Adam
Carl - what size Carter & Son spindle gouge did you use for the Ornament. It looks like my next purchase!
Chris Brown It's a 3/8" you won't be disappointed.
Carl Jacobson Many thanks found a UK distributor and picking it up tomorrow
Chris Brown That's awesome!
parabens muito bom .....
Gilmar Nardi Thank you Gilmar
👍
Is that an 3/8 or an 1/2 inch spindle gouge, your using.
I believe this one was a 1/2"

Thank you for sharing your technique and artistry, Carl. I have a question. I turned my first ornament and found that one side (the bottom side) of the hollowed out pieces had some tear out. How do you prevent tear out on the hollowed out edges? Many thanks, Dan
Thank you very much Dan! It probably the end grain. just make sure your tools are sharp. It's the best way to deal with tear out.

Christopher Fisher Thanks guys,
Have a happy Halloween, and Merry Christmas too.

Shame you didn't line up the grain better. If you did it would of eliminated the glue lines.

would you get away with a non mineral oil like walnut, rapeseed, or others with the paste wax when sanding? I have a problem with eczema at times and wearing surgical style gloves could be dangerous when turning!
+George Wilson Walnut oil works well, but is a little sticky.
Is it too late to enter the contest?
Just a trick I learned instead of a live center use a pen live center
Thanks Jacob, great tip!
