    I love going back in time to look at some of the older Jacobson work. This is a great ornament. I would not have considered a bowl gouge for a finial, I am more of a spindle gouge person for that kind of work, but it just goes to show you that sometimes it is not about the tool, but the hand operating it. Thanks for the inspiration Carl!

    Thanks Carl- I watched the video again and I see it now. I'm still surprised that you don't use some fancy hollowing tool with a curved arm or one of those with a disc on the end. I thought I was going to have to get one of those to be able to do this sort of hollowing. Nice to know I don't have to get another tool.

    Hey Carl! It's been a long time since we spoke but I just wanted to say I hope you and your family are doing well. Be safe this holiday season buddy. I woke up in the christmas spirit so I thought I would stop on by to watch some good old CJ woodturning ornament videos for some inspiration. I've watched this video maybe 10 or 15 times since 2011 and I just love how this ornament turned out. Thanks again for all of the inspiration and have a great day!

    There is a washer and a retainer ring that holds it together. It looks like the groove on the Tailstock lead screw for the retaining ring isn't deep enough. So the ring pops out of the slot.They are sending some new parts. It's not hard to work on. They have 2 tool rest lock handles which are on 2 allen wrench head screws to hold the tool rest in place. They are plastic and don't work well. I used an allen wrench to tighten the screws. But eventually the allen wrench will strip the head.

    Donna,
    I do have both of those tools, for doing for reaching around the corners on bigger pieces, but for something simple like this, a small bowl gouge will work fine. Getting more tools; however, is part of the fun. :) And isn't Christmas coming up?

  • @CarlJacobson
    @CarlJacobson  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am not sure about the brand, I just picked it up at a craft store. Just make sure it is good and hot when putting the pieces together.

  • @MrLeonard55
    @MrLeonard55 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    So i think i'll have to use a bolt with a bigger head on it or just use a small pair of vice grips to tighten it. They just made the handles to cheaply. Kinda suprised there are 2 handles instead of just one. I'll have to make a table for it because a regular table height is a little to tall for me. Several inches i think. I can put that table on wheels and roll it outside on nice days. You can always put an extention bed on it to. Can't think of anything else right now to say about it. Leonard

    The Shop Fox W1752 Lathe arrived at about 7:30 pm on Thursday night. Nice little lathe. It only takes maybe 10 minutes to set up and clean. They put oil on it before packaging. Runs pretty quiet and the belt is pretty easy to change for different speeds. There was a problem with being able to run the quill up tight to the wood piece. It wouldn't snug up to the wood very well.I called the dealer and they walked me through taking the tailstock apart. Found out the rubber collar was missing.

    @nicholls611 Not sure on the weigh of the ornament but it's hollow, Not sure on the brand it's an industrial glue gun.

  • @PM3520
    @PM3520 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DonnaMenke You can hollow small objects like these with a few very simple home-made tools. I have some hollowing tools made from Allen wrenches that work fine, just grind the short leg down so it only sticks out about 1/2" at most. I made another from a small HSS metal cutting tool from a yard sale for 50 cents, and a mini tool from a hardened concrete screw. No need to buy fancy expensive tools unless you plan to make these for a living. Tips are shaped like tiny round-nosed scrapers.

    Hi Carl- I've always wanted to make some like this. I have no trouble with spindles but I seem to get catches whenever I go to interiors. What tool(s) did you use for the inside hollowing? It looked like a square-ended scraper to me, but it wasn't too clear. tia Donna Menke

    Hi Carl,
    I like your videos. Very easy to follow. On the Christmas ornament that you did (For Chad's charity) how much did you hollow out the center portion? I have tried a couple of times but I have had the piece "blow up" on me. I assume you are just trying to eliminate some weight so that it can hang from a Christmas tree branch. Keep the shows coming. Thanks again. Mark

    Carl. Is that a small bowl gouge you used to hollow out? Any tips for keeping that from catching inside the ball?

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Scott, yes it was a small bowl gouge. I wouldn't recommend it, but back then this was the only tool I had for this. I now would use a small scraper or a carbide tool like the Easy Wood #1 hollower.

  • @ScottHaun
    @ScottHaun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What speed do you typically sand at? It looked like you slowed the lathe to sand it.

  • @DragonMaster2731

    and where do you get the purple heart?

  • @nicholls611
    @nicholls611 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    how much did that ornament weigh (approximately)? Looks like it would have been big enough to bend the branch of the tree.
    I wish I had a decent video camera, I'd post some of my stuff too.
    Oh, not sure you answered this from another video, but what glue gun are you using? I've heard of a lot of stories of some where the glue just comes out the wrong end or continually flows, neither of which is good, and just don't want to waste money on bad tools.
    Thanks,

  • @tohall18

    How even was the wall thickness? Did you do the whole thing with a bowl gouge?
    I am already planning my ornament for next years ornament challenge.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya I did the whole thing with a bowl gouge. It's about 3\8" I would probably use a small scraper now though. As for it being even wall thickness....I hope so ;) I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
