- Writing Demo Performance of "The Brink (working title)" by The Binary Obsession's Alex Schetter.
"I picked up the LinnStrument about 2 months ago and have been enjoying every moment with it since. This is a rough, early performance of the first piece I'm writing with it and my trusty Analog Four. As the way in which the LinnStrument interprets your performance is so intricate , the sound design had to be done from the ground up.
I chose to share this so early in the process because I have never been able to get an idea out that felt this raw and so intuitively using solely electronic element. Even more satisfying than that, nothing about performing it felt robotic or limited. I hope this translates through the video."

This is great. I want to see more! Also, fellow Linnstrument owner here, I am thinking about picking up a used A4. Do you recommend it to complement the Linnstrument?
As far as analog hardware goes, yes I do. It can be a bit of a hassle. Honestly I prefer a Elektron Digitone with it nowadays if I'm using hardware. But a different sound than this for sure.
Are you able to do any interesting stuff with p-locks while playing? Like can you create a sequence with p-locks but no note data and then play the linnstrument into the A4 while presets change per step of the sequence?
Unfortunately, once you hit a note manually it cancels out ALL sequenced trigs. I have been wishing for the same thing for years.

Thanks Daniel! I got the Linnstrument because it let me transfer my knowledge and training on a guitar to timbres a synthesizer is capable of. So, I generally don't stray from the standard +5 row offset. As to the lights, C is light blue, A is dark blue. It keeps a note close enough to visually track any note without cluttering the layout or making start to think about white keys and black keys again.

How did you set up the Linnstrument with the A4?
I guess its channel per note on the linnstrument and Separate midi channel per voice on the A4.

How did you use the linnstrument to control the A4?
Linnstrument set to note per channel 1-4, set the AF track channels to 1-4 all with the same sound. Linnstrument Timbre is set to CC1 and Loudness to Channel Pressure. Various parameter changes on both. My favorite is setting velocity to reduce attack time and let aftertouch control volume. It feels much more organic that way.
It's nice to see a proper synth performance on the Linnstrument rather than the usually somewhat underwhelming attempts at emulating bowed strings or woodwinds that Roger Linn himself often plays to demonstrate the capabilities of his invention. I'm sure he'd have been able to make it sound better if he'd known how to play woodwinds or bowed strings himself.
It's a very interesting melody, and it's certainly a very human performance, and it also sounds like you can still improve it with more practice.
I'm thinking to get a Linnstrument myself, but I have been a bit pensive about it, knowing I'd have to take a lot of time to learn how to play it using its expressive potential to the full. Still, I don't like having to play the modwheel or any other knobs - which also takes practice - so it might just be the best option out there at the moment.
Absolutely, I had only owned my Linnstrument for 2 months when I recorded this. Much better (read "confident") at it now.
@@TheBinaryObsession Yes, it does take some practice, but I've since noted that with all virtual instruments, anyone who plays the actual instrument being emulated will be far better at making the virtual ones sound like the real thing, which is why for instance Roger Linn's guitar performances on the Linnstrument are always far better than his bowed strings or woodwinds.
With synths, of course, one can decide oneself what it is supposed to sound like and how it should be performed with the extra dimensions of expression.
Since commenting on your video I have also bought a Linnstrument, and I really enjoy playing it, especially with woodwind sounds since that is my thing already.
I like how it is both instantly gratifying and easy to use the expression as well as feeling like more practice will improve one's performance.
Correct settings also make a big difference when wanting to play expressively. The Linnstrument is so user friendly to set up, though, so the best settings for one's style are easy to find.
Will not buy LinnStrument I think :) Too hard to play on it as I see. You have a pretty deep idea in this demo. IMHO it can be developed in a bigger piece. Just need a proper progression and the culmination. I'm "touching the strings" since 9 y.o. probably so it's not just a "noise".
