A POKEY version of one of the greatest game tunes on the Amiga.

Astounding how sid on the C64 keeps getting praise, but the 1979 released Pokey receives little credit. In 1979, there was nothing like it...and this chip seems better than what the ST provided in 1985...I have always viewed the 8 bit Atari chipset as the older sibling to the Amiga's...both being Jay Miner's creation.
Indeed, this is the real grandfather of the Amiga.
POKEY is an awesome chip, OK it's not SID but the raw sound reminds me of early Stern games and yes, I would prefer 2 of these inside the ST.
It's pretty bizarre given they had Pokey lying around that the ST had such garbage sound...
And the 7800 too!
OK, pokey isn't amazing by late 80's standards, but why replace it with something even worse?

Go full arcade sound and put quad POKEY's in your system then. 16 channel stereo? XD
Not good enough? Give your system a CPU dedicated to just sound and POKEY can do a lot of what supposedly more 'advanced' sound chips can...
I mean, with enough processing time to work with it's akin to an Amiga or SNES sound chip, but with lower sample quality...

Nice one! This whole game had a killer soundtrack.
This game was released for cpc,zx,c64,st,md and amiga (the best version).
This intro is from amiga (video) and sound from an 8bit atari made by some guy.
It was never released for 8bit atari as far as i know. Sorry if I confused u mate ;-)
Check this intro from from an amiga both video and sound and u'll see that this is the best aproach to her on sound.

What about Adam Gilmore, Philip Osgadol, Richard Munns and David Whittaker? They all wrote fantastic music for Atari XL/XE games. Even Rob Hubbard at least translated a few of his pieces.

@@20windfisch11 Tramiel wanted to push his C PLUS4 idea of the microcomputer further. MOS/CBM ruined Amiga having no clever futurists.
In my opinion:
Tramiel -> PET, C PLUS4 -> Atari ST -> TT probably too
MOS -> VIC 20 -> C-64 -> ruining Amiga 1200
Atari -> 2600, XL -> a few ideas running out of the chains -> early amiga ideas amongst them
Amiga -> Amiga 500 -> mostly out of the team at the times of 1200.
a bare Atari team under Tramiel -> Atari Falcon
Amiga lives because of amount of people who loved Amiga 500. the concept of machine was out of CBM and out of Atari. It was a concept based on high tech ideas of the era and mostly on ideas laying at the base of Atari 2600. strict integration of hardware: CPU/graphic/sound with many ways to intercommunicate between chips.
Unfortunatelly many Amiga fans are noobs seeing only res/cpu speed and are forcing a different PC in exchange of the real ideas behind Amiga and things like: SGI machines.
@@archieil There was a successor to the POKEY in development, called AMY, which was intended for the ST but it wasn't finished in time so that's why they used the AY clone. I still think they should have simply re-used the POKEY instead. This wouldn't have been in the way of Tramiel's Plus4 idea because I doubt the POKEY was much mor eexpensive than the YM2149.
@@20windfisch11 AMY was for 7800. It was lacking specifincation/documentation.
For truth. I would be glad to see 2xPOKEY + 2xSID in Atari ST. 2xPOKEY was probably of higher cost than YM.
@@archieil Recently I saw a video on unreleased Atari XL/XE prototypes where they said there was supposed to be a 65XEM which should also have the AMY, and there they said it was also intended for the ST.

the two pokeys scenario exists as far as i know. pokey can play samples too but a pcm would be great.

Oh no... 2:30 - 2:36 shouldn't be that way. The mod file that is spread over the 'net was ripped incorrectly. Otherwise, beautiful rendition!

Go to exotica dot org dot uk, click "Amiga game music", then browse the collection. The file is inside an LHA archive along with the rest of the soundtrack.
