Spent hours playing this in the 80s. Greatest artari game in my opinion. Always looking for something like it in flash. When you realise the height shadow indicator makes the game 3 dimensional - a first of its kind. And music haunts me to this day.
There was another similar game on Atari: Blue Max. There also there was a shadow underneath your plane. Up-down controls were different, though. After I got used playing Panther, I always switched the up-down control in Blue Max to reverse, good that there was such an option available.
I watch this for the music. Great skills! I never got past the missile stage, had not thought about riding the ground like you did.. guess the missiles don't even come out then. Awesome! Now i wanna play...
Yeah, many were stuck on the radar section. Fortunately I went to a computer gaming club where knowledge was spread quickly! For me, the most difficult part was the "Plasma attack". I never saw anyone passing it, everybody was killed there quickly. But in 2000s, already with the emulator, I somehow found the trick to beat the Plasma attack. The key is to fly in the counterclockwise pattern around the screen, watching your radar (instead of the main screen) for the "plasma particles", especially those approaching from behind.
@@bormisha nice.. I did get an emulator to play the classics in the 2000s, but I couldn't remember its name at the time. I may go back and check this out again 😎
Unfortunately never had this game, would've loved to play it. At least I got Blue Max. Whittaker shows his magic here once again. Very unique, but recognizable composing style.
@@bormisha SOTB is imo definitely his most significant ost. Not all the tracks are great, but worst are the last ones in game so probably few got to hear those often. Agreed though, Panther is probably the best 8bit one, if not rating through nostalgia.
Yeah, especially when they approach from behind. The best bet is to dodge them based on your radar display. I was just looking at my radar display to watch for UFOs approaching from behind and didn't look at the main view at all.
Best game of the 80's and what music !! Why isn't there a flash version of this game ?? Come on you young fellows with the techy skills this should be a doodle.
Loved the game, disliked there was no way to turn off the sound effects and play solely with the music. I'd actually try to fly around the baddies as far as possible just to hesr the song the whole way through 😁
Oh yeah, back in 1991 I recorded the music onto a tape and also played in a way to avoid triggering the sound effects! But nowadays you can get the music as a SAP file and play it undisturbed
You should have watched the messages on the game control panel. It says "Fly under radar" when you are approaching the city! For me, the most difficult part was the "Plasma attack" until I found a trick to easily go through it.
@andthis1 Actually, back then, I also didn't know what it means! But I was playing the game in a computer club where lots of children were playing computer games, and I could have watched the "professionals". Someone just empirically found that if you fly low, missiles won't strike you. Only later I found out what do such phrases mean like "Fly under radar" or "Phoenix maneuver complete". Btw, do you realize what does the latter mean?
great game, thats what is best in old games - giving emotions instead of false illusion of reality , the magic is inside of a mind of gamer .... not in computer
8 levels: desert, fields, sea, missle island, plasma sea, ocean, back at desert , and rescue bay. After level 8 go back at level 1. After sigma wave of enemy ships I don't know what waves comes.
The last coming wave has the name "Omega". Well, sort of the last one. After you destroy it or get killed, another "Omega" wave will be launched. Probably this game has no ending other than that the player will eventually get killed.
Great video.... i love and also hate this game :) I love it for the music, but it's so f**** hard.... that once (about 15 years ago) I smashed my joystick on a wall :) P.S. GREAT SKILL !!!
+Chazbot yeah, that part was hard to me as well, I was always dying there until I figured out the trick. See, there are 2 kinds of enemies in there, the "plasma balls" flying from the front and the back, and the missiles flying at you from the side. The plasma balls always track your altitude, so you can't dodge them with changing altitude. You can destroy them if they approach from ahead but it's not very practical. The best bet is to track them on your radar (bottom part of the screen) especially as they approach from behind. Then they are easy to dodge. Just look at the radar, not the screen. To avoid the missiles, simply do a rectangular movement pattern, moving right-left, then down, then left-right, then upwards. This generally avoids the missiles so you don't have to look at the screen to dodge them.
Come on, just practice a bit and it will remain playable! The games that I like most also get notoriously hard as you progress. I remember playing "Raze 2" (see my other video), its last level is so hard that it took me about 6 months of daily practice to beat it! And in every video of that game that can be found online, where the player completes the last level, their movements are so precise and agile that they, too, must have taken an enormous amount of practice to learn it so well.
Well, I could never get past a few attack waves after unloading the survivors, because the enemies get so much stronger. So I couldn't tell. But I did manage to get all the attack wave names through. I sort of stayed at low altitude where there is no forward motion but you could maneuver sideways. The attack waves kept coming, with increasing greek letter names. After destroying the "Omega wave launched", I got the next one that was also Omega. So I suspect that the game is continuous. Perhaps the difficulty level rises even higher if you manage to drop the survivors a second time. A definite answer could only be obtained by disassembling the game.

Excellent music.
Music written by David Whittaker - a Great Musician. I loved his tunes on my Spectrum
Great skill ! I was never able to pass the 6:00 minute mark. Thanks for sharing, I was always obsessed with this game to see what's happening after :)
Superb skills!
Great game me and my dad loved playing this gd old days
Супер. я увидел всю игру. спасибо
Mad props and huge respect to you! :)
You're welcome!
Holy cow! As a kid I could never get past the missile part - I wish I knew that with flying low back then!
Well, you'd still have to dodge buildings, but it's indeed much easier this way!
