Barry is very complimentary of his fellow compatriots and Rhodesians, which is very refreshing to hear and quite rare these days. When I grew up I remember this lovely way of speaking about others as indicated in my book The Flame Lily Weeps (Pneumasprings Press) and Sons of the Soil (Lulu Press). Ross.
Great to see you again Barry Jolliffe after so many years, and nice to hear your recollections of our selection course in 1974, followed by the para course at New Sarum. On the "Big Bang" op, Rob Warraker was in charge of the dems team, Bagza Stiles was part of the team, as I was, and a couple of others, sorry, can't recall them now, so long ago. I enjoyed your naming of names of many old friends and fellow SAS soldiers (quite a few live here in Australia now), and I look forward to your next recollections, Part 2. Thanks also to John van Zyl and Hannes Wessels
Yet another exceptional interview told with candour and humility. A great many names of old friends mentioned by Barry that brought back many great memories. Well done Barry, Hannes and John.
Great to see you on here Barry. You were a great mentor, center and friend when I came to Chaplin, and helped to ease me into school and rugby there. Thanks for your service in the forces and sharing on this platform. As sincere as I always knew you at school 🙏 Salute.
The coming together of all you blokes for these talks is incredibly valuable as a historical resource. I am too young to have known about Rhodesia--schools do not teach this forbidden history; almost all of what I have learned is from these videos. It would be a shame if we were to forget the truth behind this country and its unfortunate end, so this is a great job you are all doing, John and Hannes, and all the fellas giving their time to tell the stories. An inspiring story of a great nation and even greater people.
Brilliant episode.. tatenda Barry for taking this time to speak of your adventures and experiences ! Humility and honour . Glad you lived to tell your story! Lest we forget 🙏🏻. Respect and salute! Gratitude John and Hannes for another brilliant interview. Keep up the great work! RIP the fallen ! 🙏🏻
I enjoyed listening to this talk and the previous episodes. I am not Rhodesian but I experienced the war first hand as young boy growing up in the Botswana/Rhodesia border - the Gwanda area.
Lots of good stories from this guy, as an ex-Ellis Robins boy myself, the best one has to be that of the fight between a form 2 student and his metal work teacher. lol ! I can just visualize a sea of blue just cheering on this gutsy guy pounding the teacher.
No wonder the usual Rhodesian soldier was very intelligent, they had some excellent schools there. I wonder if Rhodesian could have been saved. Without sanctions yes i think so, but overall imo it was a loosing battle because all the countries opposed to Rhodesia were lying to themselves about the Black insurgents....backed, trained and equipped by the commies. Im glad you guys have kept in touch and are helping eachother many years later. I hope all vets of the bush war can one day find some peace and heal from that war.
Great story and well done for sorting out the teacher. I got clapped in the face as a 10 yr old by an Englishman who taught us in Bulawayo. He always carried a cane swagger stick which he liked to use too. Unfortunately I was too much of a wimp to fight back, so credit.
I remember Barry from Ellis Robins and Mr. Ferguson. This was a really interesting talk from Barry who was initially an NS soldier. His account of the vehicle attacks into Mozambique by the Squadron is new info for me. I have most of the books about the Rhodesian SAS, cannot recall any accounts of vehicle ops by them over the border. The only incident I recall reading was when Clive C was killed at Hot Springs driving a Unimog in Feb 79. I look forward to the next part of this remarkable soldier's experiences.
So interesting once again, thanks Barry, John and Hannes. Your comments on the high standards and effectiveness of Training Troop at RLI are spot on. Unrivalled anywhere.
When I was a minister in Paisley in the early 2000s I had two Rhodesian refugees in my congregation. One had been a senior nurse in some sort of police hospital and the man had been a government official in Bulawayo Both were left virtually penniless due to their pensions being devalued. Rhodesia's fate was such a tragedy for them My family also knew some of the Elim missionaries who were murdered so horribly
Hi Barry, my cousin Des Chalmers Was Heavy weight Boxing champion of Rhodesia, he was unfortunately coach at Milton High boxing club, which I was obliged to join. Got thrashed many times
S W Fourie having a book launch and talk about his time as a SF operator at Fancy Frank’s Somerset West 8th December @18:00. He operated in Rhodesia and thought if any of you or your viewers live in the area, it may be of interest Thanks for another great video
Extraordinary and astounding people; both men and women. Now I know why I always kept my eyes and ears to the down-under (Australian) drip-feed news on Rhodesia during the early 1970s into the post 1980 events. When Rhodesia went ZIM ~ So did the country's Gold ~ It's Rhodesian People Exit!
TH-cam don't like it as it is derogatory to Asian people and contravenes the new Community Standards. The video would be de-monetized, restricted or taken down

Same of the chap's you mentioned were still in the Squadron, when I joined
Told with humility honesty and humour.
Great as usual.
Well done Barry, John and Hannes.
Lest we forget.
Fantastic country, fantastic people, exceptionally high-standard of education, exceptionally high standard honor: RHODESIA!

Ray, your interviews were also very interesting. Loooong roads to travel.
What an amazing, humble man. And soldier of note. So good to hear how the Territorial SAS boys proved to be just as good as the " main manna" ....
What's crazy to me, is that this is my granpa. A lovely man who means alot to me. I am happy to call him my grandpa

Flip!, you must know what they taught the kids on the 80"s... you don't want to know!!
@@colinriddell9553 Was it a bunch of lies about Rhodesians being racist?

Thanks for the interesting interview with Barry. Also attended Chaplin a couple of years ahead of him.... Great work guys, really appreciated.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Big bang, yes very hectic country and night walk in was very harsh, avg 36hr awake!, everyone knackered by the time that over!

You marked the wrong place for Musengezi. Musengezi was north of the escarpment south of Kabora Basa
Yes I wondered if it was correct , thanks for pointing that out 🙏
Interesting how they changed the "Inyanga Tour" to the year before
The rugby rivalries still exists...
Slight correction, wounded, Willey Erasmus
Was Lawrence Kirstein from Sinoia High School ? Where is he these days ? Sister was Alicia Very interesting talk Barry

Would be very interesting but sadly the microphone feedback made the full interview unwatchable.

Sgt or C/Sgt? If C/Sgt then should be Colour, not staff. Colour is infantry rank.
Correct Colin, I will rectify and change the thumbnail. That's what you get from a lowly troopie like me who knew little about the higher-ups 😉
Great story. Why are you now worrying about the term "gook"? It means the same as terr surely.

I was taken off FB for saying Gook's
Apart from background noise, the sound quality is not so good. The mic is too far away, I reckon. You need a clip on microphone on the guy.
Agreed, on the mic and the venue. My bad.🙄
@@fightingmenofrhodesia Pretty riveting stuff, otherwise!
