Originally, only 20,000 people were needed for a new state? That's twice the size of my college graduating class, and half the size of my hometown. I went to a big college, but my hometown is just a town. I can't imagine either of those being considered to be on a similar scale to a whole state.

Let's remind ourselves that this was before some of the people you might have studied with were considered people. This were supposed to be farming land that would produce the nation's capital, this means extensive batches of territory dedicated exclusively to the growth of vegetables, the breeding of animals and of course, the keeping of slaves.
The world wasn't tiny, the USA was just a poor shitty underdeveloped wasteland that no one wanted to move to until the mid 1800's
I never knew that the reason the Brits stayed in their Western forts was because of our treatment of Loyalists. We were just told in school that the Brits just ignored that part of the treaty and were basically being jackoffs and I never took the time to look into it.

it was actually due to fighting off an alien invasion. Brits holding the forts was just a cover story. All of history is just to keep us in the dark about the constant struggles against the alien menace that has tried to rule over us all since time immemorial.
It actually doesn't make sense otherwise. After all the West was a pretty barren land so why would the British keep thousands of expensive troops for a land that doesn't have much to offer? The British soldiers were there to protect British loyalists and if congress can't do that then they have to.
Not to mention, well, if the Confederation was on those weak of legs, the brits in those forts could simply walk east and reclaim those territories for the crown, because why not.

Am I the only one who's seeing parallels to Gran Colombia, how Bolivar didn't have people like Franklin, Madison, or Hamilton? Maybe Gran Colombia is the example of what would have happened if the US didn't have these people who were willing to work to keep the nation together.
Gran Columbia had many issues that wherent just people issues. i think a large part was making them feel as one. the soldiers all felt like a union which is a large populous where as for GC everyone was more for themselves added in other issues. in my opinion (which means ignore this) GC was never going to work without going through many more years of strife bloodshed and reworks even if they had a more dedicated people.
with that said im almost always in favor of larger unions when they work.
I understand that both countries seemed similar but unlike the United States, Gran Colombia never held onto a single national identity. Nueva Granada (today's Colombia), held the capital but the people of Venezuela despised letting their rivals become the heartland and capital of the nation. And the mountains and vegetation made holding places like Peru, Panama, and Bolivia a nightmare.
Remember that Spain and her colonies all followed the French model of government. In France, the capital is the center of politics, economics, and military power of a nation and to not have it in your region essentially make your region a backwater state.
This contrasted with the thirteen colonies whom followed constitutional government model. Where, like in England, power was invested in both the delegates of parliament (MP) and the executive power the monarchy. Also since the Glorious Revolution, the Dutch merchant republican government greatly interested Enlightenment thinkers into following the Dutch idea of a Stadtholder to act like a monarch but with provincial delegates as the real holders of power.
This decentralized system allows economic, political, and military efforts to be spread more evenly throughout the country. This is the reason why the capital of the United States, Washington D.C., isn't really that important outside of political affairs even today. As compared to Paris, which is far more developed than any other part of France.
Works that way in Canada as well too. (Decentralised system)
Ottawa looks nice, but the money is in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary (last I checked). To some degree Montreal, but I mostly hear the former three I mentioned.

The United states weren't that united when they became independent either. They also touched on countries with and without claims and things like border disputes were flaring up.

What happened between them? I am not very familiar with US history.
preoklenthe Hamilton and Madison decided to part ways when the partisan politics of the US began to spring up. Madison decided to join with his fellow Virginian, a well-known man, drafter of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson. As they believed that the Federal Government was getting too powerful and they promoted states rights and the rights of the farmers (whom Jefferson loved btw).
Meanwhile, Hamilton decided to join the Federalist Party, with John Adams, a lawyer from Boston and a big diplomat to France, Britain and the Netherlands. They believed that the Federal Government should be more powerful and supported Federal Rule over trade, taxes and a national debt to be created. They had a lot of support by the elite and also had more favour with Britain. Hamilton and Madison would come into conflict a lot of times after this, with Hamilton supporting a strong Centralised, Federal Government with a Strong Centralised, Federal Bank. And Madison supporting a weak Government with strong states, he wouldn't allow the Articles of Confederation to come back however, he just wanted to keep the States' Rights alive.

That was really crafty. I'm not American myself but I can appreciate the Founding Fathers as being clever, charismatic and humanly imperfect people!
to bad many of the ones we forget about were the shitty ones who nearly fucked the nation over. (the ones like Hamilton, Adams, Jefferson, Washington, Madison, they are while flawed in some ways, the true founders as they laid down the path America was to take, if only we could continue that path rather then argue over many other paths including foreign ideologies which have snuck into our nation)

Throughout this series, America felt like an immature kid throwing tantrums, while not really understanding how the world works. Then over the decades it started growing up, going through a brief teenage rebellious phase in the civil war, experiencing both the joys and the horrors of adulthood with the roaring 20s and the great depression, and now finally in the 21st century America is a tired old man who just doesn't care anymore.

I didn't get a sense of james madison's political prowess from the hamilton musical, glad it was explored here.
To be fair, he was more of a bit player in Hamilton’s story compared to Jefferson, Washington, and Burr.
Speaking of dysfunctional Confederations, you guys should make an Extra History series on the Holy Roman Empire. Either an overall history, the Reign of Charles V, the attempt at Imperial Reform, or it's final moments before being slayed by Napoleon.

So, in roughly 40 minutes, you guys were able to tell the story from pretty much the beginning of the war, all the way to when the constitution was signed, which, coincidentally, is what we have been learning about in my US History class since FREAKING OCTOBER. Ugh
What, no mention of Shay's Rebellion? That was a pretty big factor in influencing the debate on the Articles of Confederation due to the size of the rebellion and the economic situation that lead to it happening.

Madison was laid back, intelligent, and savvy. His amiable persuasive demeanor convinced his fellow Virginians including (Washington) on board his Virginia Plan/Constitutional ship.👍

9:39 Delegates from 12 of the 13 states met at the Convention. Rhode Island boycotted the convention and 2 of the 3 delegates from New York left. In fact, Rhode Island was the last state to ratify the Constitution years after it went into effect.

Let this be a lesson to all about what an "Us vs. Them" mentality does to a society. Progress happens when we all agree that we need to work together and make a society better for everyone instead of focusing only on ourselves or the groups we occupy.
Okay but, many groups can only take their interests being shitted on for so long before they get fed up. The perspective of the person with a boot on his neck is that he wants that damn boot off right the fuck now. Also in this case pretty much everyone largely wanted the same thing.
There are plenty of Us vs Them counter examples where it's clear there is no reasoning or compromise that will get a common understanding without paying too high a price. Think about the US Civil War; sure remember Lincoln *probably* would have been fine with making zero effort to free the saves in existing slave states; banning slaves in new states was the existing compromise; but the Southern elites knew that their entire way of life would die without the steady expansion of new slave states who would gain increasing power in Congress to eventually do away with it.
After a certain point Lincoln and the Radical Republicans came around to the idea that there was no longer any compromise to be had; the war would be fought to its conclusion and slavery had to be purged from the earth with fire and salt; the South as we see got off too easy with Reconstruction. A house divided cannot stand.
In fact the entire reason why the Civil War happened was because when the Constitution was signed they agreed to basically hit the Snooze button the question of Slavery and came up with a bunch of "compromises" to basically just agree to disagree for 100 years and it *ended with violence and war*.
To get the constitution even enacted here; a lot of people had to basically compromise on fundamental human rights, think about that for a second. It isn't a ringing endorsement as we would like; terrible shit happened as a result that doesn't begin to get rectified for over a century, and another century after that.
No it was quite obviously racism. The entire society of the south was an ever living atrocity; the entire purpose of slavery wasn't just economic, but a means of social control. The control of the landed gentry was predicated on a quaint 19th century version of "temporarily embarrassed millionaires." A lie that any white southerner could own a slave and no matter how poor he may be, his station and position is still superior to that of the negro*. EVERYTHING about southern society was meant to justify the cause of slavery and its perpetuation.
The idea that the "statesmen" of the south wanted to sell their slaves is pretty much false; the entire constitution of the Confederacy made it illegal for any southern state to abolish slavery, and they fully intended on expanding slavery through the conquest of Southern American territory to acquire more slaves or territories where slavery could be made legal and expanded.
*Blergh at having to say this.
Well, not EVERYTHING about Southern socity was about justifying slavery, but WAY too much was.
It was one of the worst things Southerners ever did to one another. And I put it like that deliberately black Southerners were Southerners too. The fact that whites couldn't or wouldn't see it is part of the tragedy.

The end with the open studio/lock door, reminded me of Liberty's Kids when James and Henri kept trying to gain access to hear what was happening in the First Continental Congress. This was later repeated in the final episode, which was the constitutional convention.

Important lessons for small government advocates to be gained by knowing the consequences of a weak confederation. In parallel every centrally planned economy suffers just as much inability to maintain its military and treaties as well.
I learn more from this channel than I do from my actual history class...

Maybe having a nation of composed of semi-autonomous states isn't a good idea. Maybe that's why we were unable to get rid of slavery without having a civil war. Maybe that accounts for most of what's wrong with our country today.
This is amazing. I’ve learned SO MUCH more than I ever have about the beginnings of our country. It’s crazy how these states/founding fathers bickered and nit-picked over such important things as simply paying these poor soldiers. Who absolutely earned their pay! Wow. THanks Extra History!

To be fair, the United States has been in far worse positions in the past. Just look back into the early 1800s, the 1920s, and the pre-war 1930s. Things aren't too dandy right now, sure, but if you take its entire history into account, America isn't doing bad. It's just... meh. Hopefully it'll lift itself back up again in the future.

Great series - fact-based, easy to grasp, and thorough. My only 'pet-peeve' which is not limited to your presentation is why does Valley Forge get all the press? The 1779-80 'hard winter' in Morristown, NJ was worse than that at Valley Forge.

The United States of America is the greatest accident that ever happened. Just look around. It is so different from other countries. It's Amazing!!!! The world is lucky this happened.
I wouldn't call it that. More like the worlds nuttiest cautionary tale. Canada is 100 percent what it is cuz of America being what it is and Europe responded with caution as well with regard to this fledgling nation. The only good I will give America credit for is the moon landing and NASA. Otherwise, even if it usa some other country would have popped up with or without Washington.
