    Cushing has a striking appearance as is. Playing eccentric Holmes is perfect for his looks. Of all the different Sherlock Holmes I feel this version captures the true bond between Watson and Holmes. While I like Nigel Bruce I like this version showing Watson as a very competent sleuth with the tutelage of Holmes.

    Many people have played the part and Jeremy Brett is probably the best. But Mr Cushing and Mr Stock encapsulate the spirit of Sir Arthurs' novels. Very enjoyable

    Peter Cushing.. a legend.. and an incredibly talented gent, best Holmes player I've ever seen. Also a very wonderful and good hearted gent, any fellow actors or actresses who met him loved him, as did a lot of crews. Thanks Mr Cushing, thank you so much for so many years of wonderful acting, and thanks so much to the host TH-camr for putting this on, this perhaps my 2nd fav version of the story.

I can't decide which I enjoy most, Cushing, Lee, Brett or Rathbone, but the country house in this one is my favorite and the moors, which appear to be on location, where some are filmed so dark that you can assume it's a studio lot. So grateful that you posted this excellent film. Not only is Cushing a very good actor, but he even looks the part - ascetic, self-possessed. After having discovered Cushing in the part a few years ago, I can still like Brett's efforts, but he's no longer the quintessential Holmes for me. Cushing is. Thank you. This is absolutely terrific - a superb performance by Peter, I could hardly take my eyes off him. And supported by a wonderful Watson, I am extremely impressed! This also has that lovely old BBC feeling of dramas made for dark winter nights when the wind sings around the chimney pots :)

    I think I enjoyed this one the most
    [With all of them in mind, also]
    How this was shortened into an hour [or 1:11] is beyond me.
    It always struck me as too pat that Barrymore was seen/discovery in one night [when this one shows it probably the proper way -- first seeing seen, then the next night caught]
    There is more in this version in other words [but nice imagining the others at the same time]being.
    Nice
    [I think Peter Cushing is a more compassionate Holmes -- Basil Rathbone also great -- and Jeremy Brett a more hardened version ]
    All of the Holmes and Watsons are good [I'll watch anything -- having read these stories back to back and mixed-up in my youth]
    Nice..
    Thanks for having this [Almost *two hours* of bliss -- courtesy of Peter Cushing and yourself lol ].

    I have now watched three different film adaptations of this story (Brett, Cushing, and Rathbone). Each brings a unique take on the story.
    Brett is by far my favorite Holmes and his version is as faithful as a film adaptation can reasonably be to the original story.
    This, Cushing's take, is delightful for what I see as Watson's increased role--for example, his solo meeting with Mr. Frankland from the original is replaced by a direct interrogation of Laura Lyons, which portrays Watson as being more capable than some of the other versions.
    Rathbone's is probably the least faithful to the text, as most of his film versions were (when they were even based on text, which several were not at all), but it's refreshingly condensed and moves the plot along at an exciting and breezy pace.

    Two roles crown a British actor's career in the popular market: Holmes and Bond, James Bond. Holmes is my favorite, however, hands down. Still, I look forward to newer iterations of Holmes and new story lines for Bond. Although I liked Cumberbatch as Holmes, I wasn't all too impressed with the newer stories. I guess that makes me a purist.

    The ending is very abrupt. The book contains a final scene in Baker Street (as far as I remember). I'm not complaining exactly, because this version does have differences (just as any other version I've seen) and that makes it more distinctive. The priest with the telescope is completely missing. As far as I remember, the Tom Baker serial was the most complete adaption.

    • @CaminoAir
      @CaminoAir 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should have said that Cushing was great. It's taken me several of his Holmes stories to get over my familiarity with him to accept him as Holmes. Stock is very good, but he's landed with being the comic relief. Since the Doyle Watson was the narrator of the stories, he could be the competent and solid Watson. The TV and screen Watson's don't have that responsibility, so the scriptwriters chose to make him more distinctive from Holmes.

  • @willmfrank
    @willmfrank 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    There isn't a single version of H ot B that has Holmes and Watson reacting quickly to the hound attacking Sir Henry. They stand around and watch the dog get a good couple more bites in before they shoot. I know in the story they are supposed to be momentarily frozen in fear but it never ceases to frustrate me. The tale is the most disjointed Holmes story but after all Holmes's adventures and Watson's Afghanistan campaign they wouldn't be so concerned about a big dog that they couldn't shoot it in the head immediately.

      @@marcolinoviolinista But by then Holmes and Watson knew Stapleton was the murderer. The ambush of the hound with Sir Henry as bait had been set. Holmes's investigations had even led him to know the shop in London where the hound had been bought. In addition the audience also knows Stapleton is the miscreant and that there is no "supernatural" element as a result. At this point there are no surprises left but the death of Stapleton in the mire. I think Doyle had a story image, whatever its real origins, that was based on a glowing hound running across the moor and It was only at the attack on Sir Henry that he could show in it writing. The pause of H & W is the pause of the writer to show what really sold him on the story.

But actually, I read again the book on these days and there is not a single moment that says he was with the deerstalker hat in this story. For example in the Boscombe Valley Mistery it is clearly written he wears it, and it is portrayed like that in the respective episode. Quite interesting that they followed the small details, but I agree with you, the famous clothes would be very appropriate for this type of weather.

    Great adaptation. Although the script is almost identical to the
    later Jeremy Brett version in the 90s.

    Laura Lyons is dressed in period, but "Miss Stapleton" is wearing a hairstyle and makeup from 1968!

    This seems to be the best "anglosaxon" (British or American) adaptation of all I've seen so far (though Hickox's one of 1983 was also cool, even "blood freezing", for its time and for me being about ten then).
    The actors here are brilliant and the plot is rather close to the original. So to say, the script writer doesn't consider himself excessively smarter than Conan Doyle.
    Yet I'd daresay that no less valuable is the Soviet adaptation by Igor Maslennikov, of 1981, having just one serious drawback - being in Russian. But otherwise it's very entertaining with its excellent cast, mild humor and very careful attitude towards the source.

    It is strange to me, that so many people like this version, it appears. I watched it out of curiosity (as I haven't seen it for a long time) and I probably won't be watching it again. While it has certain merits, the music cutting in and out at odd times, the lines almost being fluffed during the entirety of the two parts and the on occasion, very odd directing and editing choices, just ruin it for me and take me out of the story. It is a shame that no recorded version, has truly been able to capture the terror of this convoluted tale, successfully. Perhaps, therein lies the problem. No one has been able to and no one will ever be able to, pull together the strands of the story, satisfactorily. I did have a good laugh listening to Watson creak his way into the awful stone shelter on the moors set though; that was fun

    I'll sound a contrary note. Peter Cushing was a fine and talented actor, well deserving of the esteem in which he's still held. But in this adaptation - not for me. He's too old, and too benign. I don't see the mercurial brilliance that was so well captured by Jeremy Brett.

      He's probably the worst thing about this adaptation, and not just because nearly everyone who cares enough to watch this is probably mentally measuring him against Christopher Lee's Sir Henry. Sir Henry Baskerville is a difficult character to make interesting, but he should not be so annoying that we're rooting for the Hound.
