  • My 11 year old son is giving a quick demonstration on a leaf cleanup job. There is not bagging in the work. There is also no raking. We are simply mulching up leaves and also mowing down the grass at the same time. It is not a perfect solution but is one of the easiest ways to get rid of leaves in the lawn. I recommended using a backpack blower to blow leaves away from any obstacle before you start mulching. If you want to bag the leaves, one tip is to mulch them first to reduce the amount of bagged clippings.

Couldn't agree more letting your son mow with supervision on the ZTR. I was driving my Grandpa's John Deere tractor with supervision at 9, and driving unsupervised pulling a hay wagon at 12. The key is rules, instruction, and supervision.

I removed the deck on a John Deere lawn tractor, and it was a gift to my grandson, when he was 4 years old. He was taught safety, mechanics, maintenance, etc. on several tractors I have (lawn/garden tractors, mowers, 8N, etc.), and has worked his way into larger 4 wheel tractors I have. He is now 10, and regularly uses my Gravely 4 wheelers for yard work, but not mowing. Next summer, the zero turn will be his first mowing/leaf mulching opportunity. He's driven the zero turn, but not been allowed to mow, YET. He loves the yard work, including tree trimming with a sawzall, weedwhacking, lear blowing, etc. Start them early, and keep them safe. The skills and responsiblity result in pride in their work, and feeling they've contributed and are part of the chore-time team.

I agree with teaching kids proper operating skills early.

Here is south east Texas, i started mowing my parents yard, and both of my grand parents yard for a total of about 3 acres when i was 10 years old. We lived out in a rural community and had 2 farms also. When i was 12 years old i started driving a diesels tractor pulling a 12 foot disc on the farm. I would go out and do 50 acres in several days. Definitely not to early to learn to operate equipment with some instruction. When kids grow up around it they learn a lot by watching their dad.

Leaf cleanups can be amazing or awful 😁 As long as they are priced right. Mulching them with a mower or having a huge vacuum is the only way!

Way to train up your young man. I have neighbors who have 3 boys ages 17, 15, and 12. I don’t think any of these other than the 12 year old knows how to roll the trash can to the street. The 12 year old does because he came over to my house to earn some money and I showed he how. Sad
