Brooks' article on crystallized vs fluid knowledge popped up in my feed several years ago on what happened to be my birthday. And in some ways, it was just what I needed to read. Then this conversation popped up a few days ago and as it turns out, my b'day is a few weeks away.
Listening to this clarifies the role of crystallized knowledge in a different way. All in all, this conversation showed me something about the possibilities of being disciplined and happy.
Thanks for simplifying this stuff, Mr Holliday!

17:05 Amazing observation, I was in a middle of Highschool when it all happened. Everything in front of me was shattered, but few months came in during the lockdowns, I was able to find myself through learning and practicing, discipline and all those stuff, it felt so fluid. Now I’m practicing 4 languages, built my brand, gained mass, and more focused and aware of my present moment.

Aw man I love Author Brooks. It was his podcast that introduced me to Ryan Holiday & Stoicism. Changed my life even more in a time where I was already making big life changes. It was divine timing!

Living in the countryside, surrounding oneself with people who aren't as obsessed with vanities like money, power, and fame, and taking a step back from politics all sounds very Epicurean! Epicurus himself even said that the wise person would prefer the countryside. Love dialogue back and forth between these traditions. Great interview.

The wise people are not obsessed with money, power, or fame but obsessed with wisdom and enlightenment. It's the same thing.🤣

Thank you for this enlightening talk particularly contrasting and comparing stoicism and epicureanism. It has also made me fervently grateful that I am a born epicurean! But I thouroughly appreciate stoicism even though it always comes across as a form of pessimism.

I think of stoicism as a form of resilience when situations present which you cannot change, beit anything that may put your life in disruption.

    Notes:
-Enjoyment is a higher art than pleasure, It requires brain power.
-Succes is taking away the parts of your life that aren't you, you need to reveal yourself, understand who you truly are.
-During a falling tide you can only make one mistake: not having your line on the water.
-Four important things: faith/philosophy, family life, friends, meaningful work.
-When I'm here, death isn't, and when death is here, I'm not.

Using macronutrients, or food, as a metaphor for happiness may be incorrect. According to the Dalai Lama, happiness is not arranging pleasures, it's just inner peace, or serenity. It's also not doing meaningful work, or family, friends, etc. Serenity does not depend on external circumstances. Inner peace is not grim or a lack of anything. It is a restful, neutral inner state requiring only the practices of serenity. It is also not mental activity such as thinking, reading or writing. Thinking, reading and writing can be seen has highly self--indulgent.

Ryan, I love you and your content, however, I do get a feeling that you bring a lot of width, but not as much depth in the interviews. I would love to listen to three/four ideas well-developed and nicely analyzed instead of 10/15 that are more "bullet point" styles.

I feel I don't have anything to live for, there's nothing I really want. Only things I want are things to make this life suck less, like a good job, commodities, even a person to share the boring life with. I have 0 ambition and no passion. I have a good job and a best friend who I share things with. However life has no meaning. I don't enjoy tv series, games, they feel like a waste of time and I am not really interested. I am trying to learn and improve a little bit every day, but I don't really enjoy it. I'm an introvert so social activities drain me. I meet people occasionally at the office, it's not too bad. When I have energy I am fine just doing my daily life, however when my energy is low I just wonder why I even do these things. Just to be productive and a proper human being, not let down my parents. Sure having a kid or couple would be fulfilling, but should I really bring more people to this life if I don't even enjoy it myself? I don't think so. Don't know what to do.

That kind of existential crisis is really weird to get out of. I went through a mild one for months, and the way I started to climb out was - paradoxically - using logic to tell me what emotion I should be feeling, calling up old memories to spark the feeling and just letting myself stew on it in the circumstances. Using this, I reinvigorated enough emotion in my life to keep the spark self-sustaining. I had to try multiple times before it finally stuck, and I still live in a little fear of the crisis coming back, but that fear fades each day and my feeling that the world has meaning grows each day. It might not work for you, but if you want to try it, go ahead.

As an introvert things like reading and writing can give you energy and inspiration. Do you read? Like novels. Or
Write? Stories or just journaling. Might really help you.
      Also: long walks in nature.

It would be nice if you went on about epicureanism as much as stoicism... but leave it to two stoics to be too focused on their own thing... And, you're right, Epicurus did get a bad wrap, and you just perpetuated some of it. He/they were NOT "all about enjoyment."

Seneca wasn't Spanish. He was born and raised in what we call now Spain, but that didn't happen until years later. It's not correct to say that Seneca was Spanish; the Spanish language didn't even exist yet.

I can't wait for this "thing" to be over because I want my kids and others kids (the adolescent dependant kids) to be able to engage with the world and learn to interact. Boomers oblivious need to learn form hardship but they shouldn't be so self absorbed to embrace mandates prevent learning basic life skills, kids suffer as a result.

I loved the podcast however a little less of the American Exceptionalism myth would help, maybe a little Stoic realism would help both the podcast and America. I would love for America to be the happiest healthiest most prosperous country in the world but to do that it must look at itself clearly in the mirror and continuing the myth of American Exceptionalism works again a great country and prevents it from being even greater. The vaccine for Covid, the first vaccine was from the german company Biotech and is the only one certified for use ages 5 and above, it was developed by a Turkish german couple Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci.

Well, I learned a bit from this but I also learned that you think that being well informed about politics so you can fight for democracy and human rights is like eating chips or watching junk TV and is the "wrong" thing to be doing. Don't watch Rachel Maddow! Her facts will make you uncomfortable. And don't say you didn't say that. You did. You both said being informed about politics is against your own happiness so do not do it. It's a waste of time... SO I'll be over here in the arena working to give you a democratic and equitable world while you guys are reading the really "important" stuff that gives you pleasure. Watch this video yourself and see the contradictions before you decide I didn't understand you.
