Seattle Travel Tips: 8 Things to Know Before You Go

  • Everything YOU need to know before you travel to Seattle Washington. With a population of 750,000, Seattle is located in the Pacific Northwest. Surrounded by water, evergreen forests, and mountains. The official nickname for Seattle is Emerald City, for all the trees. Also known as the Gateway to Alaska because it’s the closest big US city to Alaska. A major departure point for Alaska cruises. Seattle is home to major US companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, and Formerly Boeing. Seattle is the birthplace of many iconic music acts like Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. Seattleites have a rep for being cold and standoffish. It's known as the Seattle Freeze.

    2 - Weather
150 days of rain a year, with an average rainfall of 37 inches. It's generally not a huge downpour, but more of a steady drizzle. Make sure to bring a raincoat and umbrella.. Although you generally wont see the locals using an umbrella, just a raincoat. And if it's not raining, it's usually cloudy. Don't expect blue skies and sun here. Cloudy 201 days out of the year and partly cloudy 93 days. Winter is quite cold. Averages about 5 inches of snow per year.. If its snowing, don’t plan on going much of anywhere. The city mostly shuts down.
    3 - Getting in
Flying in you’ll likely land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac for short)
    Home to Alaska Airlines
Take the light rail in to downtown. Takes approximately 40 minutes from the airport to downtown.
    Amtrak trains
Coast Starlight from LA via Portland
Cascades runs from Vancouver, through Seattle, to Eugene Oregon
Empire Builder comes in all the way from Chicago
Driving in, it’s about 3 hours from Portland or Vancouver
    4 - Getting around
Lots of water around. Which makes getting around slow.
Seattle traffic is awful.. I personally still get a rental car.
Don't want to rent one for the whole trip? Use Car2Go.
Seattle has one light rail line. Trains arrive every 6 to 15 minutes.
2 street car lines. Fares are $2.50 for adults.
1 Monorail line, from Westlake Center to Seattle Center. It’s a 2 minute ride for $2.50
    Lots of bus lines too.
Oh and I mentioned water.. There’s also water taxis, and ferries.
    Uber and Lyft are plentiful
Walking is the best way to get around.. but it's quite hilly. Maybe even more so than San Francisco. So bring your hill climbing shoes.
    5 - Food
Just like NYC, Seattle has lots of very good restaurants, but they are expensive. Known for seafood. Locally caught Salmon and Crab. Shellfish, oysters.
Eat a Geoduck (gooey-duck) Clam, native to Washington. Popular in Asian cuisine.. 50% of all geoducks get exported to China. somewhere between "chewy clam and a tender abalone, though crisper in texture than either”
Seattle hot dog.. with grilled onions Cream Cheese
Fast food of choice is Teriyaki
Adding to Seattle’s well-known hipster status it has a wide variety of micro-breweries. Over 200 breweries
    6 - Coffee
Seattlite love coffee, and coffee shops. The coffee shop is like an extension of most people's homes, they study, they meet people, oh, and they drink some coffee.
Starbucks started in Seattle. There are more Starbucks per person in Seattle than in any other city. In Pike Place they call it the original.. But the original one is no more. If you are a fan of Starbucks visit their flagship Starbucks Reserve Seattle Roastery on Capitol Hill.
Bikini Baristas started in Seattle too.
    7 - Hotels
I think the best place to stay is in the heart of downtown. Then you won’t have to fight traffic, or deal with the lousy public transit because you can walk to most things. Expensive during the weekend. Try visiting on the weekend when all the business folks are gone.
Want something a little quieter? Try the Queen Anne Neighborhood by the space needle. Still close, and probably a bit cheaper. Just not in the middle of it all.
    Bainbridge Island for cheaper hotels
It's a 35 minute ferry ride in to Seattle for a cheap $8 round trip.
    Or even around Seatac Airport
    8 - Big attractions
Pike Place Market, Seattle Space Needle, the Waterfront.

The weather in the summer is just about perfect not too hot (75 degrees) compare to other areas. In the winter it never gets very cold high 40’s but it does get dark early with short days because of it’s northern location (opposite in the summer with long days). As far as attractions you didn’t mention the Museum of Flight (almost as good as the Smithsonian) and the Glass Museum as they are rank high with the Pike Place Market.

He left out Dungeness crabs, Quilcene oysters, salmon and many other seafood that originates here in Washington. Also the weather is great in July and August, as well as September.

@@sunnytsn6073 it kind of depends on the weather pattern each year. Some years June is rainy and we even have a name for it, “June Gloom”. The other thing that’s commonly said is summer really arrives right after the 4th of July. September is almost always beautiful, it tends to be warm and dry.

I’ve visited Seattle last year and again this year (2019). If you are staying in downtown Seattle I recommend NOT renting a car and just using Lyft or Uber. I rented a car my first time going and it was a waste of money for sure. We only drove it from the airport to the hotel and back. The food was really good. My favorite place to eat was Zeke’s pizzeria. I went both times for Labor Day weekend. The weather around that time was perfect!

My husband and I recently have taken cruises to Alaska from Seattle and Vancouver. Seattle, the homeless were a surprise that they are allowed to TENT or hangout in front of hotels, stores, restaurants, supermarkets and along sidewalks/highways. They didn't bother us, but we were unprepared seniors (68 & 80). We would not walk around or go out at night...UBER everywhere. I took the Boeing tour and the guide said 1,000 people a WEEK move to Seattle. The Tech companies are raising the rents, so previous tenants end up evicted/vacating with no where to go but the street. Cops are not allowed to harass. 3 cruise ships a day fund the Pike Market. My family lived in Seattle in the 1980's. Washington is a beautiful state. Sorry for this comment, but travelers must know their surroundings. That is one reason I look on youtube for current travel advice. Chris, you are always realistic/honest with your advice. Thank you...much appreciated.

Thank you for making sure people call it PIKE Place Market. I actually clapped when you said that. 🤣 I've watched so many of your other videos and finally found this on on my birth-city. Good job on the highlights!! I'd also point out we pronounce it I-vers, not I-vars. And the Space Needle is 605 feet. I interned there, so I do love it, but another good view is from the Columbia Tower. Less expensive and higher up!! 900 feet!! Another whacky place to check out is Archie McFee's - all sorts of strange gags and gifts. A famous burger stop that Seattleites hold sacred is Dick's Burgers (our equivalent of LA's In-n-Out.) Take the water taxi from the DT Seattle side over to Alki and eat at Marination right at the water taxi dock. SO GOOD and then you can take amazing photos of Seattle from across the water.

Seattle has less homeless and crime than San Francisco. It actually feels pretty safe at night in downtown. Just don’t go outside downtown at night. During day time, it’s very safe. There will be homeless people playing instruments near Pike Place Market, but not as much drug addicts than SF. Seattle is a fairly pretty and nice in City. It’s one of the safest large cities in America. Just still be aware of your surroundings, don’t leave things in your car, and you’re all set to enjoy Seattle. (And Washington)

Chris, excellent video - I do appreciate your insight into the cities you visit. I just watched your Singapore video, and having recently returned from touring that city I can agree with your selection of highlights and opinions. As a native Seattle resident, I would add that the Museum of Glass at the foot of the Space Needle is a can't miss attraction. I'm not a big fan of glass, but the Chihuly experience is something you won't see anywhere else. Also, time permitting, Seattle is one city worth seeing from the water - either on an Argosy cruise ship (90 minute tour) or from a Washington State Ferry.

Tip number 1: Use uber/Lyft because parking is outrageous. Tip number 2: you will come across homeless people yelling at a street lamp; 99 percent of the time they are harmless but don’t chance it. Don’t make eye contact and walk around. Tip number 3: this guy is absolutely correct NO ONE uses umbrellas. Everyone wears Northface so if you want to blend in there you go.

Just left Seattle to move to South Carolina. Love the weather and the people in Charleston but I admit to being a tad homesick.
PS Portland has a rivalry with us, not the other way around. They hate us cuz they ain't us!
Also, the bus system in King County leaves CARTA way behind. I will never bitch about Seattle's bus system again. I got spoiled.
Also also, the Starbucks in the Market is NOT the original. The original burned down in the 70s. The original owner and staff moved from Western Ave. to the current location which is the oldest but NOT the first. Sorry.

New York City gets more rain. August is when the locals schedule their hiking, camping, reunions, BBQs, and other activities that depend on good weather for success. Seattle does not get as cold as 5 degree wind chill like the MidWest or Northeast. Walking in Seattle can cause 'hairline babe fractures' because so much of it is up and down hills? Best to wear fine walking shoes that are well cushioned.
Ivar's is a classic. He used to pay for the annual 4th of July 4th fireworks. Not having family, Ivar have his multi restaurant business to the two largest State University Business graduate degree programs as management training facilities. University of Washington is one and if I remember correctly, Eastern Washington or Western Washington State University is the other.

The Rail is good, but it's hardly the best airport transportation option in major US cities. The Metro in DC, Philly, and Atlanta all have a stop inside the terminals. The light rail is at least .50 mile walk from your arrival gate. That's a lot if you have luggage and kids to drag along.

Underground parking at pike market place is a nice because theres security generally circulating around there 24hrs a day. We parked there to prevent break ins since i saw a reddit post on how common it is over there.

Hi Chris, hey thank you for all your videos they’re amazing and I’ve watched most of them....I have a question, I’ve watched this video probably five times now and I’m still not sure where to stay when I go to Seattle? We booked a trip for 8 days but then changed our mind and we’re only gonna stay for the weekend and that should be enough! Wondering, about the car rental situation and where to stay and oh by the ways? We are absolutely scared to go, we’ve watched a lot of Seattle video and none of them are really not giving us any relief being there. So we’re scared!!!!! What do you recommend, and yes I’m watching this video again? Thnx so much

If you're just there for the weekend. Stay downtown... no rental car. 2 hotels I've stayed at and enjoyed are the Marriott Waterfront, and the Hyatt at Olive 8.

It doesn't happen very often, but Seattle and other spots in Washington state can reach triple digit temperatures in the summer time. It has the last few years for a few days. And unlike Las Vegas, it's a very humid heat, so if you're in Seattle or other parts of Washington state during a heatwave, it would be best to have working A/C.

    • @MattHink
      @MattHink 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ok I can’t let this one slide, even though the old joke is to tell people not to come to Seattle.
This really isn’t that accurate. Seattleites would consider 90°F a *very* hot day. We had a heat wave a couple years ago which hit 105°F, and it was so unusual that it hit national news.
During a typical summer (even in the last few years) you should expect highs of 85°F, with an **absolute peak** of 95°F. However, the thing to remember is that even in the middle of summer it’s typical for the temp to drop to the low 70s at night. As soon as the sun goes down, so does the heat.
And while OP is correct to note that it’s not a *dry* heat, but it’s also not anywhere close to the humidity you’d expect in the South, or even in places like New England. Our humidity is backwards: the winters are relatively wet and the summers are relatively dry.
