    This is probably one of their darkest songs. They are a theatrical band where the lead singer portrays a satanic pope.. that said I think you need to take it with a grain of salt. I don’t think the people in the band are truly satanic at least not in the Christian sense of it but they do poke fun at organized religion (especially the Catholic Church) in a satirical way very well. Enjoying watching you react and that you are willing to keep listening!

      there are a few members of the band who are satanist, though i’m not sure if they’re theistic or atheistic. Per Erikkson, the lead guitarist is a satanist. Tobias Forge, the front man, also might be a satanist, not too sure, he usually dances around the subject in interviews, though he talks about Satan in a positive manner.

      They are not satanic. Tobias Forge himself has said it’s completely theater and he thought of this idea of an evil papa. A “papa” is someone who spreads the world of God so obviously Jesus Christ. Tobias Forge was like …..”hmmmmm why isn’t there an Evil Papa?” And BOOM Ghost was born. Do some research on their past and you will fall in love with them. I’m a Christian and I LOVE this band.

      @@ezekielv2479 dude, i’ve literally been into the band for awhile, my profile picture is literally of papa emeritus the third. the band itself, is satanic. it’s a theatrical band and being satanic is their act. “Papa” is the italian word for ‘Pope”, the ‘popes’ in ghost are SATANIC. in the lore, the band’s objective is to spread the word of SATAN through music. plus, a few of the band members are actually satanists. looks like you’re the one who needs to do their research tf 💀

If he went with a more mainstream, non Satanically cheesy type of band, could you imagine how huge he'd be?! The fact that he stays true to what he knows and loves is great. The fun silliness mixed with dark undertones and an even deeper, true meaning is what hooks people like us! Honestly, Ghost helps me get through most of my days. What I appreciate about Ghost is that they take everything the Satanic Panic made metal out to be and turn it into Scooby Doo fun. And they go a step further! An extended listen to them shows that Tobias Forge is very aware of the finer points of Catholicism especially. Some of the nuance of his lyrics is lost on anyone that doesn't have a Christian background (or an understanding of Latin), which I feel elevates the satire above typical shock rock.

    I think the best example of their music and the meaning behind it would be "Call Me Little Sunshine" which is a reference to Alistair Crowley who told a judge to call him little sunshine after explaining that "Beast 666" simply means sunshine and the pic in the lyric video is posed after Crowley himself. Also I'm pretty sure, not completely, but the BC in their name was because of copyright when they started to get more popular in the US as in saying, "Because Copyright"

    The theatricality of their performance comes from the lore of the band. Definitely check out the videos they’ve been putting out explaining and expanding the story of Ghost. I’d also suggest watching some of these performances live, especially songs like Year Zero or Con Clavi Con Dio, watching the concert take of the guise of a satanic worship service is WILD. Other song suggestions definitely include Spillways, Cirice, Mummy Dust, and my personal favorite- Griftwood.

    The whole thing with "Ghost BC" had to do with trademarking the band within the US. Apparently their US record label was worried that "Ghost" on its own was too common and that another artist with the word in their name would file an injunction or something. So "BC" was added for legal purposes, and I think on any legal documents they may still be identified as "Ghost BC" but otherwise they simply go by Ghost.

  • @IRanOutOfPhrases
    @IRanOutOfPhrases ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Long post that I promise circles back to Ghost, but I think this is important background information.
    Satanism in general has an interesting history. Are there people out there who actually have decided to literally worship the devil? Yeah. Is that particularly common though? No, not at all.
    If you run into a self-proclaimed Satanist, chances are you're actually dealing with someone who is really just an atheist. The thing about 'satanists' is that they're usually created and labelled by Christians. There's the whole satanic panic craze that really peaked in the 80s (and is featured as a plot driver in the most recent season of Stranger Things.) Even still today, people are so quick to label things as 'satanic' despite not knowing anything about it, including labelling non-believers of the Christian faith or LGBTQ folks as such.
    So these people just lean into that 'Satanist' label and are basically saying, "Ah, well then I must be." A part of it does then also come with a political purpose. Notably, you'll see them making noise when the gov't gets involved in wanting to put up Christian statues on gov't property. Since separation of church & state must be maintained, Satanists will enter the scene and say, "Oh ok, if you're willing to honor one religion this way, you must now honor all. We have our own devil statue that we now request you put right next to the Christian one." The actual intent is to force the gov't hands into taking down the Christian statue and keep the gov't religiously neutral.
    So now... How does this relate to Ghost? Well, I'm guessing you'll get some comments insisting that they are strictly theatrical. But I don't think we could say that's true, ESPECIALLY with their latest albums. Now I'm pretty sure I've seen an interview where Tobias Forge has stated he does have some sense of spiritual belief in God, but he also takes issue with how much corruption you can find in organized religion. And we see a lot of those criticisms being brought up in a lot of songs.
    Someone else below mentioned Kaisarion as a good one to check out. I'd agree. That will take you to a more chill vibe, but its also an awesome example lyrically of taking some very direct shots at the ways the Christianity has ruined civilizations and people (mostly centering on Hypatia, who was a very respected academic who was brutally dismembered & murdered by Christians because she wasn't Christian.)
    Now Ghost is most definitely not condemning people for their faith. But particularly with metal, we see how quickly religious folks love to claim its the music of the devil when its perfectly harmless. And going back to Satanic Panic, we've seen how this has had very real consequences, such as the West Memphis Three, who were convicted of a murder they never committed. During the trial, they brought in an 'expert' witness who didn't know crap about satanism and insisted that listening to Metallica was a clear giveaway that these kids were evil and must've done it.
    So for Year Zero? No, they're not actually trying to worship the devil here. Its just theatrics and catharsis. And the song kicks so much ass at a live concert.
    Anyway, check out Kaisarion (which is named after the building Hypatia was murdered in) next if you want to hear them talk more direct smack about religion while also having a really fun melody to go with it all.

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just a note on the murder of Hypatia, and why Tobias wrote a song about her - they didn't just object to her not being Christian, they had a big problem with the fact that she was a woman who was a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. And the fact that she was pregnant and not married.
      There are no obvious parallels whatsoever here to how modern religious fundamentalists treat women. /s

    Yep your reaction to year zero was indeed funny lmao
    This is just my opinion but what you call the power or whatever existence you believe in shouldn't or doesn't matter all it takes is to be a decent human being honestly there are too many horrendous crimes committed in the name of religion (all of them) humans just love to take advantage of each other and be in power and we have seen that in the religious form too. I think obsession over a single belief or train of thought without looking at the bigger picture and just accepting everything that is fed to us without thinking about the world we live in and all the various possibilities and situations that we as humans go through is wrong. We as a society evolve so should our beliefs in the end I believe worshipping and praising a name or belief won't give us a good place in afterlife it's how we treat each other and how we live our lives that matter and I think the creator that many religions refer to as "all forgiving" and "just" wouldn't just count the days we said our praise or that to which name we called the creator in
    But yeah that's just the nonsense I came up with while thinking about my beliefs and religion
    And sorry for any mistakes english isn't my first language
    Take care
    Edit:
    Lmao I got too serious I forgot to even say what I wanted to

    I get a kick out of watching you cringe over the lyrics. Weren't you wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt on earlier videos? C'mon...The Number of the Beast? You need to take this with a grain of salt, they're amazing entertainers! Besides, yes "he will ascend to the heavens"...Lucifer was the favorite angel chosen to be the Lord of Hell, right? At some point he wants to go back home(sorry, this is mostly coming from my watching the tv show "Lucifer" which is also amazing, by the way, I recommend it!).

      What's always been funny about Number of the Beast to me is that the song actually is pro-Christian/anti-Satan. It tells a first person story of a dude who sees devil worship, wants to stop it, but tragically becomes the next victim. The moral of the story is that evil powers are dangerous, watch out, or they're gonna get ya! Like, it plays out like a horror movie more than anything else, haha. It would be like saying the Exorcist is a pro-Satan movie, haha
      So go figure there would be a big batch of Christians that would just be like, "Wow, that guitar is loud, clearly the work of devil worshippers."

      @@MetalJosh_ Tobias Forge (frontman and main songwriter/mastermind for Ghost) had some bad experiences growing up with the Catholic Church, and this band is 100% parody of the Church. His concept for the band was an imaginary Satanist church, where the Antipope has to lead the band. XD
      Yes, the first 3 albums are almost entirely about the devil, (and everything since has had a lot to do with the devil too), but it's all with tongue in cheek. And live, they really play it for laughs. Nothing is taken seriously here, except making really catchy music!

    The Ghost B.C. thing was a legal deal. They were only B.C. in the US. There was already a band here named Ghost, and they had to ad the B.C. to not get sued.

    Eu amo suas reações, é tão espontâneo e contagiante kkkkk não entendo muito bem o que você diz mas da pra te entender pela sua linguagem corporal, isso é bom em um video de react!! enfim, year zero é um choque total pra alguns novatos no fandom, digo isso pois só conheço o ghost a 2 meses e meu primeiro contato com essa música foi muito "meu deus, que tenebroso" kkkk mas enfim, eu recomendo que você ouça Cirice, Witch Image e Ritual 💗

    As many astute commentators have pointed out, Ghost is not a satanic band in the traditional sense of the term. Tobias Forge has a deep love for using Satān to allude to other subjects. But what’s important to keep in mind is that he’s a gifted multi instrumentalist and amazing lyricist and Ghost is such a fun band to rock out to. Considering the content for too long can take away from that, so I would suggest to any new listener of Ghost to 1) Have fun and 2) don’t take anything too seriously. Christians, Muslims, Jews: all are welcome at Papa’s alter 🤘😈

    It's that fan video with the wrong lyrics again. I grew up as a Christian too. And I'm not one now. Also, they're not Satanists. They're subverting organized religion's BS promotional material of cute and lovely sounding songs about wildly screwed up stuff.

    The artistic standpoint of Ghost seems to be Satan is the good guy. Now, what their beliefs are I do not think have been publicly stated, but this is certainly the charters being portrayed. The song Call Me Little Sunshine lays it out pretty well. Now a real Satanist would be King Diamond (or his original band Mercyful Fate.) Check out the songs A Dangerous Meeting, Evil or At The Graves.

    One comment mentioned this but I'd like to just make sure it's like, known known..
    It is welcoming year zero, because when the anti-christ is born the year count restarts, just like when Jesus was born, it started back to year zero

    • @deopping
      @deopping ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, pretty sure the only reason you sometimes see "B.C." in the band name is because, well their name is "Ghost" but when they came to America there were copyright issues so they had to add the "B.C." when in America, and that is also why the singer, Tobias Forge had to out himself, for the lawsuit.

  • @NoNeedForLungs

    I wouldn't say they are maliciously satanic or honestly even satanic at all. They have some very interesting messages in their lyrics. They subliminally criticize many many things that are wrong with religion and honestly, I agree. I really recommend you watch some lyric analysis on their songs because it seriously makes you think.
    *also note that modern religion has made satanism to be such a malicious belief (this is an excerpt from "The Pacifist's Way to Satanism" by Rebecca Shapiro)*
    Exactly right. There are many different kinds of Satanists, but most don’t actually believe in Satan and don’t worship him as either a god or as a force of evil. For the most part, Satanists are non-theists and view Satanism as a personal liberation from traditional theistic beliefs. We value nonconformity and revolt against the ideas of superstition and arbitrary authority. Modern Satanists are nonviolent and interested in the pursuit of reason, justice, and truth.

    This song/album is about the birth of the Antichrist. They write music as if they are an evil band with an Anti-pope as a singer and nameless ghouls playing instruments. I believe the quote is that "the band is Santanic, but none of the members are Satanists". Think of this as a musical version of a horror movie. It's just theatrics. Super fun and funny band.

    I know this is an old video but I want to point out that the lyric is incorrect. He doesn't say "Hail Satan" he sings "Hell Satan". I think it's pretty funny that nost people miss this because Ghost is known for wordplay like that.
