For those of you not immediately convinced to go back and watch Keith's original series: The Witness is a truly special game, genuinely incomparable to anything else in quality, beauty, and intelligence. This game is Important. It is something that deserves to be experienced blind, by yourself preferably or vicariously through a blind LP if necessary. And, of all the LP's on youtube, Keith's is the only that I have seen that gives the game the amount of respect and effort that it needs to shine. Very few playthroughs go through truly blind, with no walkthroughs or outside help. I have never seen another playthrough that achieves 100% completion. Keith's Witness series does *both*. All the while, Keith provides consistently intelligent and insightful commentary that expands and explores on the ideas the game is working through. It's a brilliant series, and I have rewatched it something like four or five times. Go watch it. Watch it if you haven't experienced the Witness before, and watch it even if you have.

I remember watching some video about how some game called "The Witness" was a bad game in some way (forget why), and after watching the video, Keith's playthrough was recommended through the algorithm. Not sure if it was still ongoing or finished, but I loved Keith's style and subscribed and patreoned.

Once you have gone through and reminded yourself of the world design/mechanics on the normal randomizer, I HIGHLY recommend you play the Expert version. It’s like a completely new game because you see puzzle rule combinations that don’t appear in the base game. Also has some additional surprises…

In your original videos of the Witness, you didn't get stuck all the time, nor did you cheat and look up the solutions. And at the time I think that really set you apart from all of the other lets plays,
    just calmly and steadily progressing.
I found you through that, after searching through a lot of other the witness lets plays, and have been watching ever since

I found his channel through Souls games, but his playthrough of The Witness is what got me to take a closer look at puzzle games and appreciate them. I'll often watch an the first episode or two of a puzzle game, and his feelings about it lends quite a bit of weight on whether it is something I want to try out for myself.

I've only noticed 2 non-randomized puzzles that were: literally just a straight line at 22:00 and the small grid at 29:36. That's amazing, this randomizer is great, thank you, sigma144.
About "let's player blindness" (nevermind the inaccuracy of the name): even if controlling the character and other mind-occupying things were out of the way, both the player and the viewer notice some things the other doesn't BUT the player immediately shows that to the viewer and often there isn't even enough time for the viewer to think "I missed that". I definitely miss some very obvious things while watching but I don't remember them and there's a much lower chance I will comment about it even if I do.

That first one doesn't count as a puzzle anyway since it's just a switch, like the countless ones that control rotating panels and probably more I'm forgetting.

Jesus the years fly by and here I thought I was a recent subscriber…
Probably because the channels been so consistent with uploads, or the TH-camr picks one game and that becomes their thing which turns people off.

What a nostalgia trip. I never thought about it like that before but you’re so right about YTers just bouncing off this game and funneling people to you! This was the first game I saw from you and it was because I had gone through like three youtubers who just never finished it. I’m pretty sure I was pretty late to the whole Witness scene too. I’m glad that that all happened though :)

Hi guys I think I was the guy that moaned at him for not waiting till he found the waterfall, but I must add I knew about the enviromental puzzles before the waterfall, I was just making the point that the feeling of working it out before hand was probably not what the developer intended. I'm sorry I was wrong and should be belittled because of it. I was younger and we all make mistakes. 😂

Here we go again, i love your original lets play of the witness, and i think its one of the best ones i have seen , and trust me i have seen a lot of playthroughs after mine. its the truth in your discovery , the blind wonder and the knowledge you use as an power up more and more that impressed me. even the unabridged mountain king. But when the goal from the game is to leave the island, i consider your "secret ending" the only real possible ending because with all other ones you stay . just my opinion. therefore your "things" i consider not optional , i think its an evolution of perception and learning the language . just my personal view, dont judge. i think its a genius idea to take such a simple mechanic and take it to eleven. i recommend the noclip video to the witness. really good. have a nice day.

I'm really excited for more Witness. It was the playthrough that I found this channel with. Thinking back I'm pretty sure I probably saw the achievement hunters video and then went searching for more content. I remember checking a few different playthroughs out but yours was the one that really stuck with me and I've been here ever since. Still loving your puzzle games and occasionally some of your other content, lost dimension for an older one (shame about the rng for that one i would have loved more of it), and currently i'm loving tunic.

  • @blacxthornE

To be fair, the world puzzle mechanic intro is not really designed to be near the end, as I think the game expects you to go to the top of the mountain after you complete your first area and fire your first beam.
After all the beam clearly points somewhere and I think the intention is for the player to go see what it is. For me and I assume a lot of players, it was near the beginning, not near the end.

I think the reason why this game was called a "scam" is because it doesnt have a satisfying ending and it feels like all the gameplay was for nothing. Which is ironic because that is literally what the game is critiquing: the unquenchable human desire of enlightenment and to seek for the truth.

In regards to the puzzle that is "supposed to" teach you about the environmental puzzles... I'd like to point out that it is not at the "end of the game". It's accessible immediately after leaving the initial courtyard... in fact many, if not most, players visit it fairly early on (for example, I followed the first laser I activated to see where it was going).
I watched (most of) your playthrough last year, and I remember rolling my eyes when you very stubbornly decided early on not to go up there until you had done everything else the island had to offer first.
I wasn't upset, just a little baffled as to why you refused to take a peek... "why not try to get a clue as to what you are working toward?". But my point is... that was only the end of the game FOR YOU... don't fault anyone for finding out about that mechanic from the waterfall puzzle instead of sooner. Game designer probably expected most people to go up much sooner than you chose to.
In regards to the guy being angry and in disbelief that you found out anyways... that's silly. Despite going up there and solving the seemingly pointless panel very early on, I left without catching the hint. A few more lasers in, I saw an environmental puzzle so clearly defined that just knew what it wanted me to do.

On steam is a free parody of the witness called the looker. idk if its good but i will check it out. Kredolis and Hourglass are a little bit inspired by the witness . Hourglass uses a complete diffrent mechanic but the island scenario was taken after one developer played the witness. Kredolis will come out this year hopefully.

I had no idea a Randomizer would be made let alone possible for this game (I know the puzzles could be randomized as shown in hall of the montain king, but idea of modding this game never entered my mind)
Part of me wishes/hopes modders could go further and add Puzzle elements. The game is long and there are so many puzzles already, but case and point if you know the mechanics you can solve most of them, but having new ones to have to learn and mix with old ones would be so cool. a Spiritual sequel in a game that couldn't really have one.

I feel like the weird backlash towards this game could be boiled down to "this game makes me look dumb, so i don't like it" 😂

In my opinion, it also has to do with some vocal fans apparently considering this game an absolutely perfect, flawless masterpiece, which sets expectations high, and subsequently may cause disappointment. It's what TV Tropes calls "Hype Backlash".
Personally, I consider it a great game, and I would definitely recommend it to a fan of puzzle games. It's just that I find here and there a few aspects that could be improved. But any of those vocal fans won't hear any of it and always go "how you dare to say this game isn't perfect, there's nothing that needs to be improved".

I discovered the channel because I was trying to find a Witness playthrough to watch, but in the first two I found, the players were not smart enough to make progress.

Welcome back into the puzzles. I'm guessing only the panels are randomized. EPs cannot, since that would imply changing the environment.

I love The Witness, but I think calling it a scam was kinda fair when considering how the game was advertised:
"You wake up, alone, on a strange island full of puzzles that will challenge and surprise you.
You don't remember who you are, and you don't remember how you got here, but there's one thing you can do: explore the island in hope of discovering clues, regaining your memory, and somehow finding your way home."
This makes it sound like a story-centric mystery, like a point-and-click or something.

The Witness is how I found your channel! Watched the whole playthrough twice (first time when I needed help).
I always wondered... did you ever find the intro level puzzles you missed in your videos?

As someone who did not notice the environmental puzzles until they were pointed out to him thank you for your remarks on my lack of curiosity and my ability to miss the obvious. :P
Admittedly I certainly noticed that the patterns existed but I didn't notice what they were since I just thought it was neat to see the aesthetic from the puzzles carried over to the environment. In passing I may have tried clicking on the waterfall from the top of the mountain but I think that since my view just snapped back to the panel in front of it I moved on. It's not like it's the only panel in the game that didn't seem to accomplish anything.
You seem a bit more optimistic than Blow about the number of people who realise that the environmental puzzles are a thing. I recall him saying that maybe half the people who finish the game miss out on them... Maybe he was being generous with that statement though.

@@robertskitch Oh but those still do something in a way, even if it doesn't change the environment significantly; to teach you the mechanics of the triangles. The waterfall puzzle is just as simple as the first two you ever come across at the start.

    • @robertskitch
      @robertskitch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@AJ-uf4sh Yes, besides teaching you that there are panels with no apparent functionality they also teach you how to solve other panels with no apparent functionality...
What point are you trying to make? That if I was able to solve the non-puzzle to get out of the first chamber I should have been able to solve the waterfall puzzle? Just trying to rub in the fact that I wasn't able to solve it by talking about how simple it is?

    • @AJ-uf4sh
      @AJ-uf4sh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@robertskitch No... my point is that every puzzle has a purpose. I'm certain there's no puzzle in the game in the game that doesn't both power anything *and* introduce something new or challenging.
Also, it's just plain false that the triangles aren't involved with any functionality. Without knowing about them, you wouldn't be able to get under the mountain in the first place.
