I agree!! I knew he had a ton of experience (and passion!) when it comes to protecting and advocating for working class people. But I didn't know he also had so much experience working and negotiating with others, including those higher up on the money and/or power chain AND governments, to bring large, important projects to fruition. I also didn't know about his farm kid background. And that's a really important consideration if we're going to talk about reaching rural folks who are just so used to always voting conservative and/or have a mistrust of "city" people getting all up in their business. Gil had some real, actionable ideas on how to rejuvenate rural communities. And if the debate was any indication, he came across as quite humble. Didn't seem to have any problem making room for others. Or letting them shine. Seemed to be one of those often completely underestimated calm, quiet types who just know how to roll up their sleeves and get the job done. His thoughts and ideas during the debate actually made me go back to his webpage for another look at his policy platform, and there is a TON of information under his very last bullet point that I'd completely missed (he touches on EVERYTHING that is most important to most of us in his very last bullet point), he is NOT limited to just worker issues as I'd originally thought!!
I am VERY PROUD of all five of our NDP candidates. Anyone watching this debate can easily see why the NDP will form the next government of Alberta. Anyone of the five can and will be the next Premier, the other four will be strong pillars and deliver results for all Albertans. Two more debates to go and each candidate will up their game. The NDP has a strong moral compass, similar to the Suunto or Garmon brand. The UCP's moral compass came out of a Cracker Jacks box; and after 40+ decades in govenment it has been stepped on lots!
I'm really looking forward to ALL the debates. As expected, the candidates are ALL good people, and there isn't a single whack-job or meanie in the bunch (although there was some arrogance, unfortunately, as well as talking over others). I kept a running scorecard for each candidate throughout the debate, with a checkmark whenever they said or did something that really resonated, and an x whenever they ground my gears. Needless to say, there were a LOT of checkmarks for EACH of the candidates, and only a few x's between all five of them. But I was a little surprised at the final tallies!! So it's going to be really interesting to keep a scorecard for the next two debates as well, and tally up ALL the totals.
Living Wages would go a long way to improving the quality of life for all Albertans. Public Services, Government utilities and other public services would make life cheaper, and more predictable, and getting off the user pay economy. Under UCP we are not in this together, it is every person for themselves.
Regardless of who you like, if you want the party to actually form government, Nenshi is the only sliver of hope in such a conservative province. He's essentially a progressive conservative with wide name recognition, which is what we need. We need recognition at the poles and balance in policy.
Looking for who can flommox Danielle, or her replacement if the UCP dumps her, in the 2027 debate. Remember that Conservative or UCP premiers often get the boot before the next election .
none of the NDP can flummox Danielle Smith because she is dealing with REALITY and the NDP is in lala land. the people who disagree with ndp arent stupid or racist, YOU are the dumb one
And she is rude and impolite - lashing out at another contender is against the protocols of the debate. She prides herself on being unapologetically NDP (who isn't???) but that doesn't give her license to be rude and disrespectful, imo.
Hoffman: too much "me me me me, i did this and that" for me...not enough vision Stonehouse: great speaker but says a lot of factually inaccurate or untrue things...she'd be picked apart. Maybe not ready for the big job yet... Ganley: I like her but her actual speaking voice comes across as weak - not sure she can capture attention and win arguments unless she gets louder. McGowan: interesting candidate. i reserve criticism and judgement Nenshi: proven leader. masterful speaker, thinks and argues well on the fly. I think its pretty clear who is best equipped to go toe to toe with delirious danny.
Although I believe she has strong voice I was turned off by her constant interrupting of the other candidates - She presents really well but that was just rude and against the rules of the debate. She would make a strong environment minister : )
Why are you proud of giving away raw resources?? Refine and value-add our resources right here in Alberta!! Stop being hewers of wood and haulers of water!!
Taking all the seats in Edmonton. Taking half the seats in Calgary a combined total of 2/3 of the seats in Alberta's two biggest cities on top of having the largest number of opposition seats ever seen in Alberta is an achievement worthy of praise.
@@Ironpumper I look at the attacks on democracy, trans kids, the health care system by the UCP to make up my mind that they need to be voted out in the next provincial election. YOU may take pride in Alberta having the highest electricity bills in Canada, but there are many who know who to blame and that is the UCP.
Gil McGowan really impressed me in this debate! I realize now that I had been completely overlooking him and he actually has some great ideas.
He has the most specifics in his platform as well from what I've seen so far on his website

McGowan has thoughtful, pragmatic ideas and he is right, we need to centre workers when it comes to dealing with climate and the economy.
I wish i could combine the 5 candidates into 1 supercandidate because they all have major strengths and also some glaring weaknesses as leaders.
Agreed
They would do well to communicate that they would highlight each other’s strengths after the leadership election.

Please have a moderator on the live chat for the next debate.
Nothing will happen sitting at home doing nothing but wishing something happens. You have to get involved and make things happen

Alberta NDP 2027 ✌️✌️
💯
Gil McGowan should be NDP leader & Alberta Premier
i want to save the ndp.
I'm so inspired by the NDP candidates and the leadership debate. It is generates a lot of enthusiasm among the base. Simply wonderful !

Ganley and Nenshi give the best opportunity to bring back the rural communities. Calahoo Stonehouse would be the best environment minister.
Looking forward to the debate! I became a member of the NDP this year so I can vote! 2:40 🎉

It would have been respectful for the moderator to have pronounced the names of all the candidates correctly.
I wanted to like Sarah but her opening statement is her ad. Why waste this time? I feel like this wasn’t enough. Sorry Sarah.

Take a 50 percent royalty on all oil and gas. No less!!
I was an ndp voter, I will be voting UCP from now on
Sell Alberta oil only in Canadian dollars NOT IN USA PETRODOLLARS!! SUPPORT CANADIAN DOLLARS NOT NOT NOT USA DOLLARS!!!
41:52 - Someone forgot about the AHS letter addressed to "Treaty Indian" in 2018
? please refresh my memory.
When are the New Democrats no longer New? When do they just become the Alberta Democratic Party?
Naheed sounds like an opportunist rather than someone genuinely interested in pushing forward progressive, common sense policies.
An opportunist? I don't get that at all; he's capable, open and cares about people who are marginalized - the underdog.
I would love for nothing more than a majority NDP government in Alberta and a majority NDP government in the Federal government.
i take it you dont have a job or any money
Freeloader exposed.
Jodi has my vote. Mother Earth needs your wisdom.

What’s with this Introducer Jeff (Geoff?) and his goofy laugh?
Shut up - Jeff did a terrific job and his public speaking is very good!
Remember the NDP is responsible for the state this country is in.
50+ years of conservatives but ok Guss.
Anyone that thinks that hasn't been paying attention.
What, how so?
Care to elaborate? Or are we just handing out talking points? Either way, it will say more about you than the NDP.
