I pretty much agree with most of your ranking. The biggest disagreement I have is that I would have ranked Dark Ages at the top of S tier. That is one intnese album and I definitely thought it was stronger than their first two despite the nostolgic bias.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes Soulfly more than Sepultura. Some albums are better than others, but I don’t think they really have a bad one. And the new album is so good! Been blasting it all day.
Totem is unbelievable. I wasn’t expecting it to be as heavy and unrelenting as it is. One of the best metal albums of the year, hands down. It’s a perfect blend of death/thrash/groove with perfectly placed solos. Max crushed it, yet again!
Soulfly VIII was featured on the Enslaved (Special Edition). I found it weird that it didn't have a guaranteed spot on the initial track list but, oh well. Great review btw.

They did start off as nu metal but for the most part they seem to be a groove metal band with tribal elements. I absolutely love 3! It's my favorite Soulfly album next to their self titled. I remember rushing out to Best Buy on the release date and playing it non stop for a month straigh!
Honestly 3 is pretty solid. Its only problem is maybe just being a bit more of the same from the first two albums but maybe not quite as good. Still a fun listen though
@Joshcoshbagosh I remember being a little disappointed with Primative upon release, but it grew on me. The nostalgia really helps me appreciate 3 as much as I do.
I think that the reason Dark Ages gets such a high audience score on Metal Storm is due to the fact that it is the first Soulfly album to feature the recognizable Cavalera thrash sound along with the nu metal.
Solid list! You kept mentioning a lack of "tribal elements" in later releases. I couldn't agree more! Like Dimmu did with an orchestra for Death Cult, I'm still hoping Soulfly will lean into the Brazilian heritage, full on, for an album. More native instruments! OR do something very anti commercial and sing an entire album in Portuguese.
I pretty much agree with this ranking. I was there from the beginning, so 1998's Soulfly and Primitive will always be my top two along with Nailbomb were essential listening for me back in the day. Its amazing how much content Max Cavalera is able to come out with since Sepultura's early days up until now. I don't really listen to the newer Soulfly albums now, because Max's other bands like Killer be Killed and G.A.A.D. really caught my attention. After this ranking, I think I'll give them a listen. Thanks for this.
I would say there primative album was just as important to me getting into metal as Korns early work and Slipknot, and if anything learning more about Soulfly got me into Roots by Sepultura which then progressed into albums like Arise and Beneath the Remains. If anything I think Soulflys only problem is near the end they released albums so often and close together that Maxs lyrics took a hit and became repetitive. I would like to know how many times Max uses Insane as a lyric in there whole discography 😂. My favourite album is probably Dark ages, also I think Prophecy gets abit too much hate I like the experimentation with mellower sections on that album. So i like the fact you've put it S, good to know someone agrees with me
Totem is probably my favorite I feel like it’s one where he just sat down and said “fuck it” and just wrote riffs and music he loved it’s very reminiscent of the Arise/Beneath The Remains Sepultura days.
Pretty cool. Id put "Dark Ages" at S, "3" higher in the list, and "Archangel" higher for sure. I listened to "Totem" once, i couldn't get passed all the effects on guitar and his voice, made me not care. Way too over-produced. Im gonna give it another chance but... First impression was not good.
My only difference would be switching soulfly and primitive for dark ages and conquer. But like soulfly and primitive were your high school jams, dark ages and conquer were mine. That might be the reason why 😅
I remember the hype around the first album. My friends were really into Sepultura and had bands that covered their songs. One friend managed to get a few Soulfly songs before the album dropped and we liked what we heard. Then the album dropped and they didn't like it but I did. Haven't really kept up with them but what I've heard I've liked.
Max can be one of the most hit or miss guys in the whole metal scene just look at both the killer be killed albums but enslaved is the top for me and archangel is really a mixed bag of songs but the song archangel and a couple of others awesome also archangel is really short barely 30mins long
Max Cavalera was my main vocal inspiration towards the end of elementary school. I remember Soulfly being announced and myself going crazy about their first records in the hey day of nu-metal. Especially the song Primitive - always brings me back to 2000, what an awesome world it was back then just before 9/11 happened. I followed them until Dark Ages, which is still a very enjoyable record. Whatever Max and company recorded afterwards was just meh, I appreciate he went back to making thrash/death metal lately but won't be actively pursuing listening to their records past Dark Ages.
