I'm glad the accident wasn't worse. If the rider got caught or worse punctured and ejected through the panels the rider could have been in mortal danger. I'm glad to hear there are companies that repair old water slides to bring them up to code though.
This is why my waterpark failed: I put the fasteners on the sliding part. Also, people did not appreciate the names like "Cheesegrater" and "Tendon-Ripper."
It's bad enough the slides were in disrepair but it's even worse that the park barely had any records at all as those could've potentially prevented this accident from happening. I'm glad the guy recovered & is suing the park & that the park lost its permit as well. Thanks for the video.
Might be worth mentioning that all slides required an innertube, at least back then. Save for the one next to the enclosed slide in the background of some of the footage. So I'm not sure if these slides were ever intended to be ridden without one. I'm not sure if the guest just ditched the tubes (I'd done that as a kid), if they at some point changed how they operate the rides or if for some reason they omitted the innertube use from the report.
@@AbigailAutumn Maybe this one did use inner tubes at one point but perhaps if enough riders fell out of them due to the high speed and/or sharp corners they decided to ditch them. A few years ago I was on an inner tube slide at Adventure Island Florida and I actually fell off the tube after it rounded a corner, one that just so happened to be near one of the few places the slide wasn't fully enclosed. Luckily there wasn't much water there & I was able to casually get back on the inner tube & ride the rest of the way down with no further issues or injuries.
@AbigailAutumn I know that this slide and the three around it haven't used tubes for several years. I went almost 10 years ago and didn't see any reason to believe they ever used tubes for it
It's not _entirely_ surprising for a small park, especially if it's one that's never had a major incident before. They probably fell into the mindset of thinking only *major* repairs were worth documenting, with little patchups here and there being seen as no more noteworthy than, say, taking a car to a carwash.
Love this series very happy you expanded to cover waterslide accidents. Not gonna lie i'm kinda of worried about how the fact people whole body would end up on the non reinforced fiber glass part of the slide was missed and this design flaw wasnt a red flag i mean i dont know much about physics but this seems like someone potentially miss that part entirely and be ejected from the slide. Also getting hurt and in contact with rusty things yikes i hope the person is fine and the park really look up to design flaws before opening again
@@CoasterCollege Yw, I love these videos so much I cannot wait to view them, I must be the first, so much detail and thought is put in and we all thank you for making these incidents easy to understand for a newbie
Gad to hear that the park had its license revoked due to those record keeping failures. How the heck do you nt have records of your inspections nd maintenance?? how do you not have records of your lifeguard training? smh
When i was a kid my family would often go camping at Birch Bay State Park and we'd go to this water park. That was in the 90s-00s so they weren't so old
Yeah, the pictures of those warped and rusted parts of the slide prove that they were not maintaining it like they said they were… Maybe they were maintaining the other rides and just ignored this one due to cost or some other factor …. But they wish they had maintained it now.
It's interesting. I used to attend this park regularly in the 90's as a kid. Back then, they would not let you use them as body slides. You HAD to go down on a tube. They were clearly body slides so the park must have known those slides had issues. Hairpin was one of the more thrilling ones and I now understand why
@@Notn702 Glad to see this comment. Someone else said they went over ten years ago and they weren't using tubes so I was starting to question my own memory of them using them in the early 00's! lol
Maybe that’s why they don’t have any logs because they aren’t being honest about when the last time they were maintenance and just said they had been in maintenance and check on a biweekly basis… That or I suspect they lost-ahem “misplaced” the logs they did have. They were filed in the trashcan.
Great video, I got chills when I hear about the fiberglass and rusted steel hitting their legs. I would love so see a video of my hometown amusement park, Lagoon, in Utah. It has a decent history, our prize coaster being almost 100 years old. Not many accidents either, but the occasional every noe and then; more people die from the blue lagoon then they do from the roller coaster. My own dad did get ejected from one once, Rockstar I think. It would be nice anyways thanks.
Edit: it was Jetstar, non lethal accident, although a few have happened with the wooden "Rollercoaster" mostly maintenance people getting killed from falls though
It blows my mind how many places don’t keep proper records. When I worked at a tiny little theme park with a few rides and slides we would have to document every little thing we did down. Even if someone’s keys or something were left on a ride seat we would document it.
Ouch, and a biohazard. Rider probably had to get a tetanus shot, which is a double Ow. Hopefully the new management company focuses on inspections and safety.
Can you talk about the Fantasy Island Ferris Wheel accident of 1991? My mom was a first responder and is now terrified of heights, especially Ferris wheels now.
Ive been on hairpin lots of times before it closed and it always felt like you were going to fall out because how high you would go on the side railing part
If anything, I hope the rider sees some recompense for this. Medical bills are no joke, nor is missed income. Nor are pain and difficulty. There's a lot there. :(
I would say why not just repair it, but judging by the looks of the rest of it, it would probably just have to be completely replaced (not that they shouldn't do that either 🤷🏿♀️)
This one was both, but the stupidity wasn't the rider's fault. The park management by not properly keeping slide repair/maintenance/refurb records is both management stupidity and negligence on purpose (to cut corners and save money). Makes me believe the park was run in that blase manner since it opened. The proper way to keep using this slide without actually removing it is to fully rebuild it before the rampant inflation made it "too expensive" to do this solution. (It's never too expensive to make sure patrons are safe)
As always, this looks like another case of profits over people. These companies run as lean as possible and pay employees as little as possible. I’m flabbergasted that this doesn’t happen more often, tbh….maybe something would actually be done.
Ugh I can’t even imagine how painful getting lacerated by fiberglass and rusted steel must’ve been. Hope the rider is doing well now
Poor guy probably had to be put under for hours while they got all the glass out
It was over a year ago, if they're not doing well now they'd probably be dead SuperVinlin
Everybody gangsta til on this day, this ride at this park was operating normally
Thank you for your factual, nonsensational explanations of ride failures. They're entertaining and I learn a lot too.
My pleasure!
You know it's a bad injury when the video says "a recovery" instead of "a full recovery". Can't imagine how awful this must have been.
Still way better than "At autopsy,"
I've been on that slide dozens of times. I had no idea we weren't meant to be rising up those higher sections -- I thought that was the point of them!
Same here
I thought it was the point of them too 🤣🤣🤣

I’m glad you’re doing more waterpark incidents on your channel. Can you do the hurricane Harbor Concord incident 1997?
Been looking into it

Another great breakdown. I love to see the levelling up of your work, research, and production of these videos.
The FPV footage was a great touch!
Thanks!
i can handle a lot of these kinda of videos, but 'leg stuff' just always gets me. Especially at that angle.
Ow. OW. OWWWW.
those record keeping issues are insane
I think those “issues” were more that they were deliberately “ misplaced” because maybe there were other incriminating information within those logs.
In what world are repair records not kept?!?

Complacency is a hell of a drug
Ones that prefer to “misplace” them and claim they never existed
That POV animation of the accident had me clenching! Great video as always
Appreciate it!

Love seeing my FPV drone footage in there :)

Good job. How do you find accident reports?
Finding them is different for each accident. These were found after being posted by a news site. Sometimes I perform a public records request.
It doesn't matter what you inspected, it only matters what you can PROVE you inspected.
I think it would be interesting to do a dive into the train derailment at Silver Dollar City.
