  • Take a look above and below the water, with an occasional trout sighting (4:10-4:28) as the camera surprises them, at Fisherman's Paradise on Spring Creek between Bellefonte and State College in Centre County, Pennsylvania (a few miles from Penn State University).
This creek area has a high concentration of wild brown trout.

    • Fisherman's Paradise |...
Fisherman’s Paradise is a part of Pennsylvania angling history. Established in 1934, the Paradise was the first special regulation area for trout in the country, and it drew fly anglers from all over the country to fish there.
Currently, this 1.3-mile section of Spring Creek is managed as Catch and Release/Fly-Fishing Only.
Fishing is permitted year-round, but no trout may be taken or killed at any time.
Fishing must be done with artificial flies and fly tackle, and no wading is permitted.
As the oldest and most famous fly fishing only, catch-and-release water in the country, the place is steeped in history and lore.

    • Large Flock of Turkeys...
For decades, trout enthusiasts have made the pilgrimage to Fisherman's Paradise.
Designed and developed as a model of effective habitat improvement, demonstrating various stream devices that could be employed on other streams throughout the state, the mile-long stretch of water is worth visiting just for glimpses of what's possible.
Although it's no longer stocked with trophy trout from the adjacent Bellefonte Fish Culture Station, a trout hatchery in the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's system, as it was "back in the day," Fisherman's Paradise - and Spring Creek in general - hosts some of the highest concentrations of wild brown trout anywhere in the state.
Because they are fished over almost constantly in the catch and immediate release area, the fish are incredibly "well educated." But, their large numbers tease the anglers and provide a pageant of natural history to all.
In a nod to its legendary past, the stream at Fisherman's Paradise is a no-wading zone. The "ladies only" section is long gone, a part of a less politically correct period now left in the past.
Adjacent to Fisherman's Paradise is the 100-acre fish culture station built in 1933-34. It's open to the public from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.
The facility consists of exterior concrete raceways packed with thousands of trout, display pools inhabited by some real monsters, two hatchery buildings that contains concrete and fiberglass interior raceways and fish-egg incubators. Water supply to the facility is from a spring and 2 production wells.
On the opposite side of the stream is the commission's H.R. Stackhouse School. Among other purposes, it is the primary training school for waterways conservation officers.
To get to Fisherman's Paradise, south of Bellefonte and north of Rt. 220, turn west off Rt. 150 onto Rishel's (SR 3004) and then, at the "T," turn left onto Spring Creek Road (SR 3001), which dead-ends in a parking lot at Stackhouse.

I've been at that very place with WLA (Wildlife Leadership Academy) & we did fly fishing there. What kind of trout did you get?

I remember fishing there more than 50 years ago. Can't remember if I caught anything.

It's really a special, beautiful place. It probably hasn't changed much over the decades.
