You have a window of time, but that time eventually goes away.
Neither would have any of the other guys moron! Remember there were others in the group! The Beach Boys was and still is a group effort and does not or never has revolved around any one person!
Vreenakthesenator Mike never kicked Brian out. He has for years chosen not to be there and still does! The onky time it was not Brian's choice was when Landy wws controlling him and that's it!!
75DrummerBoy He kicked him out after the recent reunion, it was all over the news. In any case, Brian is the only irreplaceable member of the Beach Boys, he wrote almost everything up until Smile.
***** Mike never kicked anybody out it is beyond his power to do so. The reunion was always meant to be a one time only thing! You Mike Love haters are so ignorant to the facts it's pathetic!
75DrummerBoy He does have the power to do so, he legally owns the rights to tour under the Beach Boys name. It was widely reported that Brian was very disappointed, he had wished to continue touring with them and make another album. This comes from Brian himself. He did his new solo album instead, together with the other two members who were given the boot.
Mike was a decent front man, the best in the group, had a great lead vocal that suited their early material and worked wonderfully in their harmony blend, and he contributed a lot of classic pop lyrics. His lyrics for 'I know There's An Answer' and 'Good Vibrations' are far better than the original lyrics which were embarrassingly trippy. There's a chance the Beach Boys couldn't have become as popular without him. There are lots of geniuses out there who don't make it big. When Brian wanted to get more artistic Mike resisted and by some accounts was partly responsible for derailing Smile, but he certainly wasn't the only reason. He didn't make Brian take a wheelbarrow load of LSD and write 20 second snippets instead of songs. My point is, whatever negatives are true about him, there are also a lot of positives which it is too simplistic to ignore or deny. People can be both good and bad at the same time and his resistance to the changing direction of the band is understandable even if he was wrong. I think he was right to resist how goofy and druggy Brian was becoming. And as people point out, he toured tirelessly all through Brian's rise and fall and kept the band alive, with Carl and Al.
Carl kept the band together. That's why after he passed away Mike decided to fire Al and turn the Beach Boys into a cover band. And one of those 20 second trippy songs that you mentioned won Brian a Grammy Award.
Totally agree. Smile is what got me into The Beach Boys, but why the hell shouldn’t Mike say ‘uh is this tooo weird’ about it. At the end of the day he still turned up and did his bit, sang ‘over and over the crow cries uncover the cornfield’ etc. I’m sure he can be a right mardy bitch at times but can’t we all.
This is bizarre. Mike cant you just tour with Brian once every couple of years fior the fans? Ticket sales would be significantly higher. Touring on your own at Rodeo's and carnival's 's diminshes the bands legacy.
@@wildestcowboy2668 It doesn’t take talent to make money in the music business. Just be in the right place and right time. Hence Mike Love. I will say this, he was smart enough to screw over a couple of pill poppers but what does that say? Pretty pathetic “Pal”

I saw the Beach Boys recently in Santa Barbara, and last year at the Ventura County fair. They sound fantastic! As good as ever. Mike Love's voice is great, and so are the voices of Bruce Johnston and the other younger replacements.
@@sdot5389 I agree. And in recent years Mike really isnt singing his own parts. Yet Brian has done shows where he does parts of vocals solo. M L is washed up and has been. If he hadn't sued for the name and some credits he wouldn't be able to appear as The Beach Boy's. Where would he be then? Obviously he will always reap profits from the name and the music he didn't write. So he will have wealth, but not Wilson's talent or sound.
Brian Wilson will always be he man. Mike love, u blended in well with that sound but to even think u could remotely replicate that sound without Brian is totally a farce
One alone did not the Beach Boys make. I followed them since I was little in the 60s n there's more to the story. He kept this group alive as well as singers n songwriters names. Tho Brian even got back in
I like "Help Me, Rhonda" a lot. Came before Pet Sounds totally revamped The Beach Boys. The whole album was amazing ! "Wouldn't it be nice" and "God only knows" were the absolute standouts ! Pet Sounds completely transformed them. Sort of like "Achtung Baby" pulled U2 out of the 80's and into the 90's.
They had a good thing going but with Pet Sounds jumped up about 12 rungs on the music industry respect ladder and created one if the greatest transcendent music albums of all-time and it was Brian Wilson's baby, he was a visionary. Genius's don't "settle".
***** That's weird you earned a PhD in psych to learn about physical illnesses and had to get a PhD to understand panic attacks. Again, none of this is relevant to the original post. You ought to try going for a PhD in philosophy.
It's seriously hard to count Mike Love as a Beach Boy... The Beach Boys were really the Wilson brothers and Al Jardine. But Brian was just nice enough to let Mr. "Little Douche Coupe" in on the act. Something that he really shouldn't have done. But he did, purely because Brian is such a kind soul. Al, Carl, or Brian could've just sung lead, and definitely with more effort and talent then Mike's whiney "singing" voice.
I would imagine the 2012 Beach Boys tour made more money than Mike usually does. It’s really only the personal issues that kept it from continuing, I would think.
You can hear the hemming and hawing in Mike's voice at the questions being asked. 72 years old and Mike Love is still up to the same crap. The fact that he tours under the Beach Boys name is a disgrace. If he had class he would just call it Mike/Bruce and friends. You don't take the Beach Boys name without Brian Wilson involved. As has been said many times.. Without Brian there is no Beach Boys.
westy40 and I’d add Allen Jardine too. Without he, and Brian Wilson, there’d be no Beach Boys today as both were instrumental to the band, even after Dennis and Carl died. Al Jardine is s Beach Boy too!

Mike Love doesn’t deserve the hate he receives and he doesn’t need to be reminded about how much better his cousin Brian is. How would that make you feel? He is a nice guy who always gives credit to Brian. Mike Love played a critical role in the commercial success of the group. He was in charge of media relations and was also the frontman. Brian didn’t have the personality for that side of the business.
He actually claims to have written "Back in the USSR" for Paul McCartney whilst they both were in India. And that Bruce Springsteen is too "chicken shit" to fight him.

I don't like Mike Love, but all the "there would be no Beach Boys without Brian" need to understand something: There would be no Beach Boys without Mike Love. By 1966 Brian was DONE. The ONLY reason the machine kept going was Mike Love's ego, work ethic, and professionalism. Music is music, but a massive entertainment act is a business, and Mike always understood that. He's NOT a nice man from all accounts, but many business savvy people aren't. Brian is clueless about business. They complimented each other in such a way that Brian's genius has been kept public for almost 60 years!
Thank you! I know I’m 8 months late, but I’m scrolling through all the Mike Love hate nonsense, and thinking “surely someone has to have the common sense to recognize the importance of Mike Love in The Beach Boys!” No one likes to recognize the fact that Brian Wilson, (who is a genius, and “the heart of The Beach Boys” as Mike Love always gives him credit for being) unfortunately, completely f-cked himself up, and forced the rest of the group to try and carry on. Without Mike Love’s ambition (and Carl, Dennis, Al, and Bruce, of course) The Beach Boys wouldn’t be as relevant as they still are today. Here’s hoping to a 60th reunion album and/or concert tour with ALL the remaining guys!
To me..Brian is a guy who had great moments and potential. He hit a number of times with dont worry baby and god only knows...good vibrations...but thats it. He has been mediocre in the vast number of his performances throughout his life. Whether due to drugs..mental illness or whatever. Mike Love didnt have Brians potential musically. But drive and consistency is a talent also. One that brian lacked apparently. Brian Wilson..the man with the golden falsetto and magic ear for harmonies and melodies...rarely showed himself. Good thing we have those recordings. Their influence on music is immense.
Fact… the record companies at that time insisted on Brian producing the music and if he wasn’t able than Carl or no deal and no records so stop the nonsense. Carl and Dennis ( mostly Carl) kept the group from obscurity after Brian’s mental illness.
Whether you like him or not, it's ignorant to say he has no contribution to the band. His vocals are great including leads and low harmonies, and he also wrote a lot of the lyrics to songs, that Brian's camp did not want to give him credit for. It's reasonable to sue to get credit for songs that you wrote if it is being denied to you. Maybe he is a jerk but it's stupid to say he had no contribution.

They'll never reunite. Love sent the other members of the band a telegram right after the 50th anniversary tour along the lines of "your services are no longer required".
Why put down Mike -- he wrote many of the lyrics to our favorite Beach Boys songs - his shows are close to 3 hours still - i admire Mike Love - if Mike had not been in Brian's life would Brian have succeeded? Maybe not - they started the band together and Mike was competitive and wanted to succeed and his tenacity helped the band get off the ground and sustain - bottom line is that Mike wrote the lyrics to California Girls, Good Vibrations etc - for that he should be applauded, appreciated
They might not have succeeded without their abusive dad but Mike was a JAG with a huge ego that grew out of control. Murray put them on the map to success ironically.
@@pauldrew3696 Let me tell you about Mike -- two years ago my then 22 year old daughter and her best friend went to a Beach Boys concert -- they raved about it -- the band played close to 3 hours and Mike was a great host and she was impressed how great Mike and the band sing -- when i told her Mike's age she could not believe it -- what front man does not have a huge ego -- just ask Keith Richards about Mick Jagger -- i admire Mike because he is a survivor who never ended up in rehab with drug and alcohol problems, never ended up in a psych ward due to a mental breakdown, was never arrested or in trouble with law enforcement -- and with his constant touring he has helped to keep the Beach Boys brand super strong -- props to him and never forget he wrote many of the lyrics to the Beach Boys greatest hits.
I'm not sure how it works legally, but I would assume if you get co-writing credits you are entitled to half royalties on writing revenue. How does that break down? Well, Brian has always said and Mike agrees, that Good Vibrations melody was written, composed, arranged and envisioned by Brian. Mike wrote the line "I'm pickin up good vibrations, she's givin me excitations" as well as the line "I love the colorful clothes she wears, and the way the sunlight plays upon her hair." Okay. Lyricist Van dyke Parks says Wilson asked him for a better rhyme than "excitations" because he didn't like it. Parks said he wasn't interested in messing with it, and nobody would notice because the music was so good. So for that, Mike Love apparently thinks he deserves writing credit royalties.
Guess what, you clown, BRIAN DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT WANT TO GET IN A ROOM AND WRITE SONGS WITH YOU! I'm sure he couldn't think of a worse Hell than doing that.
Brian said he had fun and wanted to get back on the stage with Mike and the others. Another thing, Brian has been in a room with Mike and wrote songs together, hence why Warmth of the Sun, I Get Around, and such were created.
I love all this Mike n' Brian chatter like they live around the corner. Music creates false familiarities. There's the Beach Boys then there's the Fanboys.

I'm just saying. Mike didn't like the Pet Sounds too. He wanted to continue with the formula. Mike should open his mouth only to sing. We can't say for sure if Brian needs him or not. But Brian make Pet Sounds practically alone so...
I see the "Hate Mike Love Society" has descended on this thread. Brian and Carl were the heart, soul and mind of the Beach Boys, but Mike Love made a significant contribution, especially on the early fun fun fun days. So give it rest, people, Okay? The best videos are when all or as many as possible of the originals are together and that includes Mike.
He was an arsehole, plain and simple. Mike Love is a parasite who fed off from the brilliance of Brian Wilson
+nygblue24 so in the 60s when the beach boys came out, all they were singing and writing songs about were surfing, cars, and women. brian wilson, one of the original members wanted to do something different such as having complex instrumentation, having songs about love and personal issues, etc. so he recorded a bunch of instrumentals for the then upcoming album, Pet Sounds, the beach boys' masterpiece. when the other beach boys heard the instrumentals, Mike Love said they should stick to the regular beach boys style talking about cars, women, surfing etc. Brian insisted that they do what he wanted to do so they can prove to the people at the time they can make real music that was different from what the usually did. so they recorded the album and then brian wilson decided to make a follow up to the album, tited "Smile." the music he was recording was even more experimental than Pet Sounds and when the beach boys heard the instrumentals for the new album, Mike Love kept on pounding it into brian wilsons head that he hated what brian was working on with smile and that they should stick to what they have been doing before. after months of tension between him and mike, brian had a nervous breakdown, left the beach boys and slipped into 20-30 years of depression and hasnt fully recovered since, and Mike was one of the main reasons he fell into depression. thats why people such as myself hate mike love. its because he saw what Brian Wilson was doing and basically drove brian to the point of depression.
sorry for the long comment it was just a lot to explain so a newcomer to the band can get a sense for why a lot of hardcore fans hate mike love lol. btw check out pet sounds if you havent already. its a masterpiece
In defence of Mike Love, Brian Wilson was basically turning The Beach Boys into his own solo career. 'Pet Sounds' and 'Smile' are great, but not on a 1960s pop live stage with ancient sound systems. 'Good Vibrations' already was a struggle to perform. The Beatles became a studio group in late 1966, but The Beach Boys were basically a live group. I mean, they were The Beach Boys, not The Bach Boys. :) I love 'Pet Sounds' and 'Smile', but I do understand criticism on that symphonic musical direction.
Brain Wilson is a hollow shell of a man with zero personality and no stage presence, thanks to destroying his mind with drugs. I can understand why Mike Love doesn't want him involved. Mike has always supported and been respectful to Brian over the years despite his massive mental health issues and breakdowns. That hasn't been Mike's fault. Mike Love puts on a great uplifting positive show and while fans will pay, it can continue.
Mike Love had a serious crazy breakdown that involved exposing himself to Little Richard so the story goes. He was bat-sheet crazy. Had to be put in a straight jacket. His father and brother had to come try to get him under control. So, not sure how he escapes from the mental issues reputation.
Mike love had dated my mother and he i believe is my father. we look so much alike it is not funny , he saying that he wants to make things right, well here is your chance. he even made a necklace out of seashells and gave it to my mother.
Only on TH-cam will you see people that believe Loves story telling and it’s likely he sends them on here, in the music industry he isn’t even regarded, just brushed off as a nobody.
Mike love is The Beach Boys David Lee Roth. Love him or hate him... the Band is not the same without him. Brian Wilson is a vegetable. If I was given The Choice between seeing The Beach Boys without Brian Wilson or without Mike love, I would absolutely discard Brian Wilson at this point in time. He is hugely important to the band...... And has absolutely contributed more than Mike love....... But on stage at this age..... Mike love is going to bring way more to the performance than Bryan Wilson is capable of bringing. It's just reality. I'm not talking about anything sentimental here.. Brian should have been in an old age home years ago... Mike still knows how to put his pants on with the front in the front without any help.... Just more entertaining. A train wreck for sure but more entertaining
Same story as 'Little River Band'. The 3 icon Australian musicians that created the whole sound of the band, have been banned from touring under their original name, because it was bought out by one member, who has more or less created a new band, who constantly tour the US.. Nothing less than PARASITES! It's as wrong , and ridiculous as someone getting the legal right to take over Picassos name, and lay claim to his creations!!!!!!

They play the LRB famous numbers he was never a part of. Yes arsehole!!! Now the loved Aussie band is all American. Pathetic!
I don’t understand the hate for Mike Love. He is always nice. Sure, he said a couple of bad things apparently but those theories have dismissed by members of the group. He does not have the same musical ear as Wilson but willingly helped him with lyrics and he wrote some damn good ones. He always speaks well of Brian. phil123711 You mean MIKE Love. Mike was integral to the Beach Boys, he co-wrote many of their classics, not to mention his great singing voice which was complemented nicely with Brians.
Shannon Miekka Brian Love, funnily enough, is the son of Mike Love. Fancy that, huh. Naming your son after the genius cousin who gave you a job outside of a gas station attendant....and then suing him for all he's worth.
Mike Love is all about the money and flogging the shit out of the early songs. He resented Brian's attempts to take the Beach Boys in a more artistic direction. If you want to really piss off Mike Love, go to one his shows, stand at the edge of the stage, and between songs yell, "Over and over, the crow cries 'uncover the cornfield'". From the Smile sessions which Mike hated. It will totally freak him out.
Mike Love was the Beach Boys main lead singer and wrote the lyrics and hooks on a large portion of their songs including their opus Good Vibrations. He's had to put up with drug and alcohol melt downs on the parrt of the Wilson brothers and being horrendously ripped off by Murray and then Brian who admitted it. Those who deny this and are too stupid to get it are not true Beach Boys fans.
Get your hands on Brian's first autobiography that Mike went to court to have it suppressed and be prepared to have your eyes opened! It cut too close to the bone for a certain bully!
@@Hahaa99 You've done the usual 'stupid' trick of side stepping the main argument and choosing to attack instead the little rhetorical flourish at the end.
Of course Love's wearing a hat with his name on it. He says Brian and the others will do a fine job lol. As what Brian and the others think of this clown behind closed doors.
"They're going to..do..dooo...dooo what they dooo" SHUT UP! You stole the brand! The least talented but I guess the most "clever" one (and I don't mean that in a nice way).
Mike Love might be an @$$, but he was a great vocalist for the BB. Anyone who knows anything about singing and is objective knows this. Watch early BB "live" videos to see how he effortlessly switches gears from the bass lines to tenor; as easily as Brian goes from his regular voice to falsetto. Time to give credit where it's due, even if the guy is a jerk.
His voice was part of the blend in the early days, Brian wouldn’t let him touch a lead in complete form as it was just not good enough to carry an entire song. He could handle some of the verses decently until the beautiful background harmonies took over.
Mike Love does not resonate as the Beach Boys' muse of poetic magic; can't imagine him waxing Dylan, like a Rolling Stone, much less strung out stoned, as his seemingly straight and narrow stiff wooden demeanor intimates otherwise. Perhaps his former gig at a 60's Era Esso Service Station pumping gas faded from his nearly OCTOGENARIAN memory as a casualty of huffing fumes from leaded regular in the LA Ventura Highway smog of burning rubber.
Fair enough, the fifth most talent in the group isn’t bad for the a group with the magnitude of The Beach Boys, actually though Bruce had more value so make it the sixth.
The Beatles liked Mike Love a lot. The beach boys had thought of sacking mike love in around 1967 and consulted john lennon and paul mcartney for their advice on what to do. John simply said that they should keep him in the band and even wrote the song " All you need is LOVE" about mike, as a message to those doubters. No mike love, no beach boys. Remember all you mike haters who leave comments on every beach boys song about him...all you need is love, LOVE is all you need !
Mike Love is a certain kind of person but I think he was right about SMiLE. It was hypocritical, pretentious, and carried too many done-to-death American crapsongs to ever be a classic. But I'm glad it finally got released because it's still The Beach Boys and it's still better than a lot of stuff that came out of any time period.

And as people point out, he toured tirelessly all through Brian's rise and fall and kept the band alive, with Carl and Al.
...and don't forget--Mike wanted to work and tour. Brian was totally out of it for 35 years. Today Mike can still sing, Brian cannot.
Carl kept the band together. That's why after he passed away Mike decided to fire Al and turn the Beach Boys into a cover band. And one of those 20 second trippy songs that you mentioned won Brian a Grammy Award.
Agreee with this
Totally agree.
Embarassingly trippy? You sound lame as hell
The biggest charity case in Rock and Roll history.. "Riding the coattails" is his newest song.
Love Brian Wilson!
This is bizarre. Mike cant you just tour with Brian once every couple of years fior the fans? Ticket sales would be significantly higher. Touring on your own at Rodeo's and carnival's 's diminshes the bands legacy.
Lol
They are down to playing at bar mitzvahs and local bars now.

All important.
I saw the Beach Boys recently in Santa Barbara, and last year at the Ventura County fair. They sound fantastic! As good as ever. Mike Love's voice is great, and so are the voices of Bruce Johnston and the other younger replacements.
Those aren’t the Beach Boys. It’s the Mike Love Self Admiration Society with a bunch of nobodies behind him.
Brian says he hates you, Mike. Videos have been posted on you tube with him stating this clearly....So yes, I'm sure that's because you 2 get along.
Brian Wilson will always be he man. Mike love, u blended in well with that sound but to even think u could remotely replicate that sound without Brian is totally a farce
Mike Love is a legend in his own mind!!!
One alone did not the Beach Boys make. I followed them since I was little in the 60s n there's more to the story. He kept this group alive as well as singers n songwriters names. Tho Brian even got back in
Brian Wilson broke the cycle of the dying surf hooha. So glad they went on to better things.
Their early surf stuff is great. 'I Get Around' is brilliant.
Wud Dude I agree with you 100%!.But I think Brian took them from being a one trick pony to the heights of creativity as time passed
Brian evolved the band and made the greatest album of all time
Mike Love prevented the release of Smile and can choke on an egg for all I care
People that keep saying that you can't tour as the Beach Boys without Brian Wilson: Brian Wilson stopped touring with the Beach Boys in 1964.

I'm glad mike love was also part of the beach boys he wrote good lyrics and had a good voice also.
No Beach Boys without Mike Love, Al Jardine or Brian Wilson. Unfortunately not the same without Carl and Dennis Wilson either.
Wow. I have mr Marks on my first BB album. Greatings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I saw the BBs live in Boston with Brian, Al Jardine and David Marks

I would imagine the 2012 Beach Boys tour made more money than Mike usually does. It’s really only the personal issues that kept it from continuing, I would think.
according to mike love on stern, he stated he wrote most of the songs............who knows?

This is one of the few astute insights into this overblown issue
Thank you! I know I’m 8 months late, but I’m scrolling through all the Mike Love hate nonsense, and thinking “surely someone has to have the common sense to recognize the importance of Mike Love in The Beach Boys!” No one likes to recognize the fact that Brian Wilson, (who is a genius, and “the heart of The Beach Boys” as Mike Love always gives him credit for being) unfortunately,
completely f-cked himself up, and forced the rest of the group to try and carry on. Without Mike Love’s ambition (and Carl, Dennis, Al, and Bruce, of course) The Beach Boys wouldn’t be as relevant as they still are today. Here’s hoping to a 60th reunion album and/or concert tour with ALL the remaining guys!
I like him..He makes sense to me..
Hey Mike, an orchestra has something like 100 members. Brian's band may be fairly big, but no... it's not "almost" an orchestra.
Well I think he got the point across fine. ELO for instance. Big band. Not an orchestra. But one could dare say “almost”
I'm with Wilky on this one.🤙
Dear Mike you OWE your life to Brian Wilson

No he doesn’t.
No issue between mike and brian? Brian has on multiple occasions literally said that he doesn't like Mike Love.

Dawn Keir Kokomo

Haha 99 True!
Say hi to Hadi Krishna for me mike.
I'm new to the Beach Boys. Why are people so down on Mike Love?
Thanks for sharing!
sorry for the long comment it was just a lot to explain so a newcomer to the band can get a sense for why a lot of hardcore fans hate mike love lol. btw check out pet sounds if you havent already. its a masterpiece
And then had the nerve to make fun of Brian about the condition he was in during his depression.
I love 'Pet Sounds' and 'Smile', but I do understand criticism on that symphonic musical direction.
He sings weird and may not good for brian But he wrote good lyrics like Surfer Girl and Good Vibrations
Mike was a valuable member of the group, he contributed in his own right and never needed to go in this direction.
Mike love had dated my mother and he i believe is my father. we look so much alike it is not funny , he saying that he wants to make things right, well here is your chance. he even made a necklace out of seashells and gave it to my mother.

Hope you find the strength to get better 🙏
Of course Love's wearing a hat with his name on it. He says Brian and the others will do a fine job lol. As what Brian and the others think of this clown behind closed doors.
but later on in years it was the wilson brothers that screwed everything up because of drugs and alcohol.
Didn't watch the video, just don't want to miss an opportunity to say F Mike Love. Tool box.
"I don't like Mike Love at all." - Brian Wilson
I mean, I dont like Mike Love but at least he doesn't talk harshly about his brothers.
"They're going to..do..dooo...dooo what they dooo" SHUT UP! You stole the brand! The least talented but I guess the most "clever" one (and I don't mean that in a nice way).
Minas Som The most ‘con’ niving.
He was actually the most talented singer in the band. There's a reason brian made him the lead singer.
He's no jerk--he just says he contributed to their early hits--that is obviously true.
Mike Love is Miserable
Saying Mike love is untalented is just not true but he's certainly a jerk and not nearly as talented as he believes himself to be
Fair enough, the fifth most talent in the group isn’t bad for the a group with the magnitude of The Beach Boys, actually though Bruce had more value so make it the sixth.

+Ratelzwatel all true !
John Lennon called Mike Love a jerk.
+justmadeit2 And then my head popped off.
+Samuel Bannister Ha, full respect for Mike Love is needed !
Mike Love is a brand thief he stole the band name . Go figure the least talent in the group
I wish Brian had payed Mike Love to be his 24 hour a day therapist.
Mike is delusional..
Love, what a 💩
He has a mental disorder, but never got treated for it.
Mike Love is a genius.
