    Worth noting, "coronavirus" gets your video demonetised but "covid-19" doesn't, even though they refer to the exact same thing and the permitted one is arguably more specific.

      Better be specific to avoid confusion & demonetization. One will argue that "Coronavirus" can also be used for SARS & MERS.

      @@tunnar79 They are all crude oil based. And Jet A1 (the fuel used by airlines) is very similar to Diesel, just with a different viscosity and low temperature capability.
      So yes, the fall in oil prices currently can offset some of the costs, but not nearly enough. Not to mention, most airlines buy fuel futures to have fuel at fixed prices going forward, it is called hedging. And if an airline hedged fuel, they do not pay the current low price.

    For the past few days at work, I've spoken almost exclusively with passengers wanting to cancel or postpone their trip. Most of them were attending events that got cancelled because of the virus scare, and many of them feel obliged to explain they feel people are overreacting. Some tell me their employer has cancelled all business travels as a precaution. Then there's the tourists; most of them are afraid and want to go a country with no or very few infections so far, or postpone their trip indefinitely/cancel. I am getting very nervous about the massive blow that not just the airline industry, but the global economy as a hole is taking right now as a result of measures to slow the spread of the virus.
    All those cancelled conferences mean a lot of business opportunity lost. This means those businesses will not be hiring more staff or buying more raw materials to meet demand. Both business and leisure travellers won't be staying at a lot of hotels, won't be eating at a lot of restaurants, won't be visiting a lot of attractions... I think we are going to see a lot of bankruptcies in the coming months, and not just airlines.

    The other problem that European low cost short haul Airlines have that US don't have to worry about of course is competition from Trains.
    And particularly so in an airline who specialises in within-country flights.
    Even on flights from parts of Scotland to London by the time you add in travel to/from airport there isn't a huge time advantage, so their costs are bound at top end, and many would prefer the more sustainable train unless there was a huge benefit.
    While this isn't a factor with some flights of course it could be enough to tip the balance on a fragile budget

    I agree with the CEO of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, on this. He's said in the past that the European aviation market is going through the same process as the US market did a couple of decades ago. It's consolidating into only a few major players that dominate the market. In the US you've got American, United, Delta and Southwest who make up 80% of the market alone. In Europe it's looking like we're going to have a big 5 or 6. Those being Ryanair, easyJet, IAG (owner of British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and more), Air France-KLM, Lufthansa Group (owner of Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Eurowings and more) and maybe Wizz Air. Wizz Air who are absolutely massives in Central and Eastern Europe.

This over capacity and low fares is a recipe for disaster and bankruptcy. With respect to failing short haul airlines like Flybe this has been going on for years in the US as small rural communities which cannot sustain economic air service have it discontinued altogether. In the UK there is more than adequate rail and perhaps motor coach available which might take longer but is viable for short haul and communities like Exeter and Southampton MUST make do with economic reality.

    What the British Government should be doing is to stake 50.5% stake in a 'new' Flybe with Connect Airways (jointly owned by Virgin Atlantic and Stobart Aviation) holding 49.5%, to re-establish UK regional routes using the Q400 turboprop aircraft. Flybe UK regional/domestic routes should be considered strategic 'social' services by the British Government.

    Airlines could just partner with others in different continents and rent planes when there's high demand in their respected market and low demand in their partners to avoid planes sitting round.

    Airports have large fixed costs, without enough used capacity there is a very real possibility they will have to close, unless the government subsidises them to stay open.

    • @sykessaul123
      @sykessaul123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why is that a bad thing? Air travel has proven to be the worst method of transport for short haul and domestic flights in terms of carbon emissions. The solution is to renationalise the train network and invest into it instead of trying to keep the corpse of air travel alive. If we had a decent high speed rail network it wouldn't matter that small airports had shut down coz you could just get a train to one of the larger international ones. Realistically the UK only needs a handful of them.

    • @Croz89
      @Croz89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sykessaul123 In theory, yes. In practice it's more likely to result in a increase in road journeys, mostly by car. Many domestic flights run early in the morning or late at night, getting people to destinations before or after the first and last trains. You'd have to run trains much earlier and later to fully replace those services, which then makes track maintenance difficult. These flight also serve as feeders for many medium and long haul routes, many of which again, would be difficult to get to on time via rail. Considering all that you can see why many would just drive to the airport or their destination.
      It's also useful if you need to get somewhere quickly, say you live in Belfast or Inverness and need to go to London just for the day. By train or car you'd pretty much have to stay for 2 or 3 days because it takes so long to get there.
      And in some cases like the Isle of Man and Belfast, air travel is more important, as rough seas can cancel ferries but conditions may still be suitable for air travel. With no airport people could be unable to travel for days, so it's more likely subsidies will be given.

    • @sykessaul123
      @sykessaul123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Croz89 The only reason it'd increase road usage is if the other public transport isn't viable which for a lot of the country it isn't. That's not to say it couldn't be viable if the govt actually invested in it. Rail is almost always faster than car, unless you tell me travelling from Edinburgh to London takes you less than 5 hours? If we had high speed rail on all of the UK's most travelled routes, taking into account checking in, going through security and waiting for runways to clear, hsr is quicker than air travel for most short haul flights such as Edinburgh to London. Not for places like Inverness sure but that's because you're on a 4 hour commuter train to Edinburgh before the faster line to London. That's the whole point of investing in new infrastructure so that you can have the hsr lines separate from the commuter lines. If air travel is to still exist then it needs to change from the "let's cram as many people into the aircraft as possible and if we don't get enough people on then we shut down" to a "let's make each journey as efficient as possible even if that means customers switch to rail because of the cost". There's no reason why trains can't serve as a transport link to the long haul flights, I'd argue that that already happens with the Manchester Airport train that travels from Glasgow Central which runs from 4am. Does that cause a massive problem for rail maintenance? Not that I'm aware of and I've travelled that line a bunch of times.

    • @Croz89
      @Croz89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sykessaul123 The Glasgow Central to Manchester airport service is about 3 hours 48 minutes, it's no good for early morning flights even from 4. It's true there's no flight that would get you in appreciably earlier (from Edinburgh or Glasgow), so it's kind of a moot point. But to Heathrow, for example, you'd have to go to Euston and get out of central London, meaning 11-12 is probably a realistic earliest time, but a flight from Glasgow could get you there by 8:30, and then you're already air-side so you don't need so much time to transfer. Sure, it's only a couple of hours, but that's the difference between a viable itinerary and not.
      And while a few mainline services do run very early, many suburban, commuter and interurban lines do not, meaning a lengthy drive and long term parking maybe needed anyway, and if you're going to have to drive, why not just save the hassle of dragging luggage around and go straight to the airport? My line to Manchester doesn't start up until around 5am. And god forbid it's a Sunday, when many charter and leisure flights run and the trains don't start until much later.
      With a world class HSR network with 100's of billions of investment over the next 20 years, sure, your idea could work (though like with AVE in Spain some routes are unlikely to ever be profitable compared to road or air travel). But we don't have that, and we need it now, not in 20 years. Until then many regional air passengers will likely drive instead.

Not to mention the United States and Canada have no viable competition to air, outside of the Windsor-Quebec and Boston-Washington DC rail corridors. Meanwhile I can get from London to Southampton via Waterloo station, faster than I can get to Heathrow. By the same token however, the UK has more rail companies than the US has airlines.

    The only way to hold up basic aviation infrastructure in places where it's not that profitable is either lack of competition or national airline.
    In highly competitive market, no airline will tie up their plane on barely profitable routes, even if they could charge more money. Which is suprising as one would assume competition and low margings would make more routes profitable. However given there is a logical cap on prices, and companies want to ultimately reach a more dominant market position, being the only one serving some small fish route just isn't worth it compared to competing on the already crowded market.
    Which goes to show an aspect of capitalism not often discussed. The potential of companies, and part of their value, often partly lays in the expected dominant marketposition in future. Which means being able to charge customers more, while serving less. Thus the ultimate direction of competition is not cheapest prices and best services for customers, but abusive control over basic needs and services

    The gov should just scrap air duty tax like Ireland has done but make airlines promise to promote carbon offsetting as a compromise so if they can keep their routes for less say if flybe didn’t go under and a route say Belfast to Leeds was £63 they’d push for me to round up to £70 use the £7 per person to fund more tree planting or another carbon offset project instead the boost in other revenues like local tourism would recoup more tax in say vat than it will specifically from air duty tax
