- Johannes Brahms "Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op.56" were performed by the WDR Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its principal conductor Cristian Măcelaru on 17 January 2020 in the Cologne Philharmonie.

The highly unexpected minor chord at 15:58 gives me serious chills...

One of the very first pieces of classical music with which I became familiar. It used to be very popular, but I haven't heard it for years.

In der Tat, das WDR Symphonie Orchester hat einen klaren, für mich stark emotionalen Klang. Aber auch die HR Symphonie und die NDR Symphonie bleiben nicht dahinter!

Man kann Euch stundenlang zusehen! Tolle Charaktere, Ausstrahlung und Begeisterung, egal, ob jung oder alt! Liegt wahrscheinlich am Dirigenten!
Als würdet Ihr selbst gerade entdecken, nachempfinden und der Welt mitteilen wollen, was Johannes Brahms seinerzeit an Höhen, Sentimentalitäten und Tiefen entdeckt und hier und da sicher auch durchlebt hat! Schade, dass man mittels der Orchesterliste beim WDR nicht immer schauen kann, wer wer ist und was Ihr für einen Werdegang hattet.
Okay, Cristian Măcelaru ist wahrscheinlich wegen Euch so gut! Tolles Team!

Wenn einer sich noch nicht traut, seine erste Sinfonie zu schreiben, kommt als Ergebnis ein solch schönes Stück Musik heraus. Brahms hat sich sehr vorsichtig an die Komposition von Werken für Orchester herangetastet, seine Haydn-Variationen op 56a sind eine dieser „Vorstudien“, erst nach den Erfolg seiner Serenaden komponierte er seine erste Sinfonie, die prompt als Sensation und als die fehlende 10. Sinfonie von Beethoven betrachtet wurde.
wobei man sagen muss, dass die haydn Variationen etwa fühnfzehn Jahre nach den Serenaden geschrieben wurden und er bereits einige andere Orchesterwerke wie unter anderem das Requiem herausgebracht hatte. Und er war bereits 40 als er die Haydn Variation geschrieben hat, also nicht mehr so jung. Aber es stimmt natürlich trotzdem, dass seine erste Sinfonie erst danach erschienen ist.
@@jessemoog5310 vielen Dank für den korrekten Hinweis: ich hatte eine Einführung zu einem Konzertprogramm mit diesem Stück nach meiner Erinnerung zitiert. Die Kernaussage bleibt aber bestehen, Brahms hat sich langsam an die Sinfonie „herangerobbt“ und sich sukzessive mit immer größeren Stücken beschäftigt, bevor er seine erste Sinfonie niederschrieb. Der Erfolg dieses Stückes spricht für Brahms Vorgehensweise.

Ich finde das Original für 2 Klaviere op 56b noch besser. Es ist transparenter im Klang, und insb. die Var. 8 ist wesentlich effektvoller und schöner! Auch das ruhige Stück Var. 7 ist gesanglicher. Aber insg. himmlisch bearbeitet.

It' s OK but 1,728 musicians to play something that Haydn swiped and performed with 25 max and 4 min, means it's a bit on the podgy side. Hope that Joe has had a word with Johannes about it!

@@petercrosland5502 Well I enjoyed the variations very much. They are ,in my view, compositions that could stand on their own, very strong themes.
The original "Saint Anthony Chorale" as part of Divertimento in B-flat major was written for an ensemble of 8 instruments: 2 oboes, 3 bassoons, contrabassoon and 2 horns. Brahms indeed orchestrated his variations for a big orchestra, although the theme follows closely the original composition. It sounds good, it's meant to be juicy, emotional and we would never know the original without Brahms. The things is that Haydn wrote incomparably more music than Brahms, it's very nice of Brahms to have picked on this tune and have made one of his masterworks out of it.
